Not all of these entries are BEFORE we were Night Vale, of course, and this particular piece I wrote was from summer of 2020. I almost said at the height of the pandemic, but that's not really true. We don't really know where the height of the pandemic was or wil...

I started this episode without any idea how I was going to end it. That’s right, this one I straight up Stephen King-ed. I liked the idea of the moon going missing, and I trusted that I would figure out an interesting reason for it having done so. (Incidentally, the title is a direct reference to the John Steinbeck book 2022-04-01 19:06:27 +0000 UTC

From early on in my writing, I was interested in the things you can't see, can't know, can't understand. I like the suggestion that there are secrets. I like eavesdropping on other people's conversations, not for the lurid details, but for the mundane chitchat that suggests that there MIGHT BE lurid details.
I'm not sure what the term for this is. Subtext? So...

Back in the 1990s at the University of Houston, I went to watch an evening with Stephen Sondheim. He was being interviewed by a local theater critic. The interviewer was going mostly in chronological order through Sondheim's works, and when they got to Company, the critic asked if that musical was autobiographical.
Sondheim said no, it wasn't. But insofar as any work by any...

My driving instructor when I was 15 years old gave us a lecture about driving while tired. It's dangerous, but there are some things you can do to keep yourself awake. The most obvious thing is caffeine: diet colas and black coffee, specifically. He recommended avoiding sugar entirely bc it provides a brief rush of energy and then a crash. There's also turning your air conditioner up, especiall...

Sometimes you can't be subtle.
Years ago, I sat down to write an episode about the town of Desert Bluffs merging with the town of Night Vale. It was an episode about movements of people, about the necessity of embracing the stranger. The refugee crisis in Europe was all over the news, and I was faced with an impossible task: how do I write this episode without it seeming like an epi...

There's a fine line between writing a Night Vale episode and writing a 2500-word short story narrated by Cecil Baldwin. Honestly a lot of our episodes are just that: short stories of horror, humor, or general absurdity. And "The Delivery Man" fits this as well.
Perhaps the more cynical term for this is a "one-off" or "filler" episode. I hate the term "filler" because it suggests that the ...

I'm surprised I haven't put this little play on here yet. I looked through the Patreon archives, and it seems I have not done so, not at all. It's a pretty important piece of pre-Night Vale history. Joseph and I met in 2009, when he did a workshop with the Neo-Futurists. And I became a pretty big fan of his writing style.
He came to a lot of our shows, volunteering in the box office...

We're recording our behind the scenes patreon bonus episode tomorrow, so it's your last chance to ask us questions. This will be me (Joseph) and Jeffrey answering, and we're happy to talk about whatever you're curious about. If you gave us a question in the earlier post, no need to repeat it, we'll grab those ones too.
Thanks!

[Content warning: talking below about death; mostly philosophically, but if you're kind of wanting to think about upbeat things right now, maybe come back to this post later.)
An idea I come back too pretty regularly in my writing is "individual apocalypse." In science fiction (and even in real world news), there's a lot of focus on The End of Times. And I don't wish to downplay that. But...
