The donning of ones first pair of trousers (known as a breeching ceremony) was for a very long time considered kind of a transformative coming of age, and into one's male gender, ceremony all the way up into the 1900s when this idea seemed to fade away into obscurity. One proposed reasoning for this fading of tradition was the invention of more efficient washing technologies which meant it was ...

The flashback continues.

This has nothing to do with the plot or young Jack here, because it is definitely not THAT sort of comic. But it's wild to think back on this time and realize how even the concept of adulthood was wildly different. Boys as young as nine years old were sent to Port Arthur  as punishment (an estimated 10-20% of convicts shipped to Australia in genera...

Ah the stain, the stain. Convict ancestry was a pretty big soft spot for much of modern history even up to fairly recently. Families were ashamed and would conceal it (along with indigenous heritage) easily into the early 90s and some I am sure have beyond. This has changed with the cultural climate and now it's more often seen as a badge of honour, but especially at a time when the colony was ...

Congratulations, you made it to more dicks!

As time in the probation stations moved forward and British inquiry into rampant sodomy increased, convict lodgings became increasingly patrolled and opened (for example lack of doors, and viewing windows for guards). Funny enough, this did nothing to curb engagement in scandalous activity, as convicts were noted to continue being pre...

Yeah it's happening. I'm on the fence about a release sced since The Enormities That Exist is my priority but wanted to act on my energy for this very goofy premise while its fresh in my head.

My ultimate goal with this is that it ends up showing on google before the 1950s film of the same name and really confuses the fuck out of some film buff.

Ended up writing a short goofy script, likely will get to doing work on that as well, two comics a week is a bit ambitious but we'll see how we land. I'm in process of relocating currently so may be a quieter week. Comic will still be up this weekend. *works on page furiously before movers arrive*

I'm talking myself into a short comic with these guys. Peter and Bruce. Best of mates in 1950s suburban Melbourne. Just the closest of pals. suspiciously close. no not suspicious, they are just the purest embodiment of mateship, right? right.

As I was saying, flogging was a violent spectacle. It's amazing to me more people didn't just straight up die from it. Interesting side note, as I mentioned before, military men were often selected as floggers due to their experience with the lash. In the book Tasmania's Convicts by Alison Alexander, Alison goes into a bit of detail about how military punishments were actually considerably hars...

As you would expect, the flagellator was not a  popular man. In a sense he was kindred to the free-hangman (while the hangman had typically fallen so far from social grace that it was the last thing they could really do, the falgellator had his destiny as pariah thrust upon him.) See: Nosy Bob for a particularly colorful life story of a hangman in the mid to late 1800s New South Wales.

Ah yes, the good ol' triangle.  Flagellation was pretty commonly doled out for any number of transgressions and ranged between 12 and 100 lashes (The 100 maximum was only per offence, so if you really pissed them off they would get around that max bu just giving multiple charges) Say you lazed off a bit and they decided you needed to be put in line, you're unpopular with the authorities so...
