Kanin Fyre: Chapter 9 - The Gods’ Tournament

The tournament isn’t until tomorrow, so we decide to scope out the arena today. Up close, it’s even more impressive than it was from the airship. The maze, which appeared to be made of white stone from a distance, actually seems to be made of solid light. The passageways are wide, and there's a transparent ceiling to prevent anyone from going over the walls. I can make out ten entrances and...

Kanin Fyre: Chapter 8 - Dunmora

The next night, we track Zyneth with the obsidian dagger we made for him. This works exceptionally well, until he plants it in an empty room to lure us into a trap. The night after that, he leaves his dagger behind. We try to plant more glass on him as a tracker, but he quickly picks up on this as well. The fourth night, and our last night aboard the airship, we try a different strategy.

Kanin Fyre: Chapter 7 - Hide and Seek

It takes me a moment to even realize the airship has begun to move. Unlike the little ship Flint had flown us in to reach the Drifting Isles, the Sun Skimmer carries over twenty crew members and at least a hundred passengers. It’s a good thing I don’t need to sleep, because the only accommodations left were small, single-cot rooms. The main deck is packed with people, all looking o...

Kanin Fyre: Chapter 6 - Pitstop

We say our goodbyes the next morning, and Noli hands me a stack of blank papers magically addressed to their inn. She tells us if they leave, she’ll have the inn forward the letters to their next address.

“Stay safe,” she signs. “Zyneth, take care of Kanin. Ink—”

“I’ll take care of it, don’t worry,” I sign.

“—also take care of Kanin.” She gives me a t...

Kanin Fyre: Chapter 5 - Not Another Emrox

Unsurprisingly, Siqi’s office reveals no indication of when Siqi intends to return to the Academy. I also don’t have any luck finding notes on void magic. There are certainly some kind of notes, scrawled in such an illegible script that even Echo has trouble translating, but they’re either about other types of null magic, or they’re at such a technical degree I don’t understa...

Kanin Fyre: Chapter 4 - The Academy

Once we make it down the shore, the streets and canals are even wider than they appeared from afar. It's not hard to see why this is the capital of Valenia South.

Although the city's primary inhabitants don't speak, the city is still bustling with familiar sounds. The hiss of food stalls, the clatter of carts over stone, messenger wyverns and pets chittering and barking; doors bangi...

Kanin Fyre - Chapter 3 - Simora

From the number of scarves and heavy coats that have begun to adorn the citizens of Harrowood, a hint of winter seems to be in the air, but Caecius's workshop glows with warmth.

“It's about time,” the dracid says as I let myself in. “I was beginning to think that you'd gone on another suicidal mission.” She doesn't even look up from the piece she's shaping over her forg...

Kanin Fyre: Chapter 2 - Next Steps

When we get back to the Dainty Drake, Noli is already waiting for us at a table with her wife, Rezira. The inn has become familiar stomping grounds by now; enough so that people have stopped staring at me every time I walk through the door. We’re in Harrowood at the moment, as we’d come back here to get help from Caesius, my glass mentor, after 95% of my body was destroyed in the Y...

Kanin Fyre: Chapter 1 - Sparring Match

We crouch low behind the wall, sending a flicker of our void out to peer around the corner. Only one of Lusio’s two moons is glowing overhead, painting deep shadows between the buildings, but our vision isn’t hampered by darkness. The square is empty. A night dove coos once, and then all is quiet.

As silently as we can manage, we activate a Chromatic Limb, Chaining dozens of segments ...

Fyre Fly: Chapter 49 - Epilogue

“That should do it,” Dizzi says, straightening up as she claps dust off her hands and plants them on her hips. She looks critically at the spell circle beneath her. “We’ve double and triple checked all the circles by now. We’ve learned as much as we can from arcana books from the surface. There’s nothing more we can do to prepare. I’m ninety-nine percent sure this will work.” View Post

Fyre Fly: Chapter 48 – New Horizons

Ten days passes a lot faster than you would think when hitting the time limit means your city falls out of the sky.

After our initial exciting foray into the Drifting Isles, we return with much of the city’s guards. We take as much as the hydra meat as we can to preserve it, and spend several days rooting out any other major threats. The flock of griffons are a real danger, but they als...

Fyre Fly: Chapter 47 - Hydra

A wave blasts into us, knocking everyone but Ollie from their feet. My fingers drag through the flooded grass as I try to claw my way to a stop. The air resonates with a deep roar—not Ollie’s roar. I cough out a mouthful of water and wipe more from my eyes, looking up.

A long, serpentine neck cranes above us. Its face is somewhere part way between a dragon and a snake, with catfish-li...

Fyre Fly: Chapter 46 – To Vanquish a Dragon

I have Ollie land on the nearest floating rock so we can take stock of our surroundings. It’s a wide, flat surface, at least a hundred meters across, overgrown with wild grass and speckled with trees. There’s also hints of crumbled buildings here; glimpses of white marble protruding from hills, like bones half buried in the ground. Ollie digs his claws into the edge of our platform and peer...

Kanin Book 3 Complete!

Water Kanin is officially complete! (And on the first day of Pride, no less.) But his story is far from over. Right now, I've roughly outlined the plans for an 8 book series.

I'm a little over halfway drafting Book 4: Kanin Fyre. This one has been a lot of fun, since as the name implies, getting to see the characters (finally!) interact has been a delight. Some of their interactions have...

Water Kanin: Chapter 50 - One Chance

“Kanin, enough!” Zyneth says, jerking the blade away and stuffing it back into its sheath as we release our hold on it. He jabs a finger into the back of our void. “Let go of me. It was a trick!”

Yeah, we’re starting to put that together.

We let go of Zyneth, still keeping close to him as we shrink back in on ourself. We set our core on his shoulder, and he puts a hand up ...

Fyre Fly: Chapter 45 – Scouting Party

With Attiru’s compass, it only takes three weeks to reach the Drifting Isles, but in that time I notice a decline in Sandro’s mental health. His Sanity Stat is at 77% now, and it was about when he crossed the 80% threshold that the effects became more noticeable. He’s twitchy and jumpy—though that’s nothing new—and has taken to rubbing a temple when he thinks no one is looking. Even...

Fyre Fly: Chapter 44 - Friends New and Old

A week into our journey, an airship approaches our city. It isn’t the first, and it certainly won’t be the last, but this one is familiar. Its balloon is bright red.

“Captain Marlowe,” I greet as his ship docks and the man strides down the plank with a wide grin. “Glad to see you again. I must say, you had me wondering what to expect with that last cryptic message of yours.” View Post

Fyre Fly: Chapter 43 - Geodesic

With Captain Marlowe still on his way to deliver the Drifting Isles tracker, we’re left to predict the Ruin’s path on our own. Based on the data the wind mage conclave sent us, we can roughly determine where the Isles will be located, at least for the next two months, within about a five-hundred-mile radius. After that, the uncertainty begins to increase beyond reasonable estimates. We’ll...

Water Kanin: Chapter 49 - A Conversation

As Zyneth leaves, he rests a hand on his dagger, nervously drumming his fingers over the hilt. I anxiously watch as they round the corner of a building and pass out of sight. I guess that’s it. Nothing I can do now but twiddle my non-existent thumbs. Likewise, I can feel Zyneth continuing to nervously drum his fingers on his knife, each tap vibrating through the blade.

Wait.

It had started as a search for dragons. Once we figured out that Sandro’s Role Requirement counted anything from the dracus family as “dragons,” our options widened significantly.

There are several common dracus species on Dunmora, I learn, but many of them are of the large and dangerous variety. Apparently, animals on this continent can often appear greatly oversized due to some fo...

When I have a chance to read the scrolls I purchased to research dragons, they’re less illuminating than I wanted them to be. One of them is about the value of dragon bones and scales, and the arcana applications of such ingredients. It also makes it abundantly clear how rare such items are, due to the rarity of dragons themselves. That itself doesn’t bode well.

The bestiaries contain...

Fyre Fly: Chapter 37 - Surveillance

Sandro is… a handful.

The Shroud, at least, pretty much leaves everyone alone; it’s too busy tripping Sandro up by wrapping itself around his body at every possible threat. Threats include, but are not limited to: loud sounds, bright colors, Ollie, and people walking into the room. Though I can’t entirely fault the Shroud for being so nervous with the Dungeon Core’s presence persi...
