The Story of Bercouli talks about Becouli walking into the lair, seeing the sword and getting chased off by the dragon when he tried to take it. The Dragon wasn't some monster to be slain, it was a guardian of the Human Realm placed there to defend it from invasions from the Dark Territory. That's why Kirito, Eugeo and Alice were worried about the dragon when they went into the cave but came to the conclusion that "if it's jsut some Ice the Dragon wont mind it" and were shocked to see it's bones and find out that it was cut down by a sword.
