Back when Sinon lost her father all three of them were in the car accident, Sinon was only 2 so she doesn't remember but her mother broke both her legs so she couldn't do anything besides sitting there and watching her lethally wounded husband die a slow and painful death. The accident happened on a unfrequently used road and they went off the road so it took hours before anyone noticed and called for help. After the incident Sinon's mom was broken, she mentally regressed to the time when she was a teenager and met her husband, that's why they were living with Sinon's grandparents, her mother was in no condition to take care of herself much less raise a child. At this point Sinon isn't even sure if her mother recognizes her as her own daughter or if she beliefs Sinon is a little sister or something. After the robbery it was hard for Sinon to stay in the same environment, so for high school she asked her grandparents, who are her legal guardians, to let her go to school in Tokyo, somewhere removed from the incident and somewhere no one knows about what happened. BTW she was talking with her Grandpa on the phone not her uncle, the subs messed that up,
