The towns are safe zones you can use weapons but you will not do damage, unless its a duel, most of the duels are 1st strike wins to prevent death but you can always chose a full duel when some one will die, Asuna was tankfull because like actual phones someone could have chanlenged her in her sleep and use her finger to acept the dual and you could die in your sleep its kinda an exploit in the game that actually exists in real world with the fingerprint unlock in phones.
