My brother in Christ, they show the pain that Kushida went through to maintain her popularity because she is NOT just simply a bad person that we should hate cuz she is against to our protagonist. She is essentially a child addict that never got the help that she needed. There is something legitimately wrong with the chemistry in her brain. The proof is how far she is willing to torment herself to receive the fix of being recognized. And then, this child addict that felt backed into a corner snapped one day and it keeps haunting her to this day. As she says, all she did was tell the truth about her classmates. Horikita even acknowledges that if no one who knew her past was in this school, she would have simply been an exceedingly nice and popular classmate. After her backstory, I couldn't help but feel so bad for Kushida. She has so many layers and is just so human. In fiction, antagonists are often some of the best written characters and I think Kushida fits this mold very well.
