As real life bugs, ancient Bugearth arthropods used to lay dozens of eggs. The vast forests, hot deserts, dark swamps and underground caves were always full of dangerous creatures. mainly reptiles and amphibians that hunted the ancestors of our beloved bugs. The exaggerated number of eggs was a way to increase the survival of their species, as many would probably barely even hatch.
Nowadays, with technology and a reduced number of natural predators, modern Bugs evolved their reproduction by adapting to a safer environment, and, with help of implants and contraceptive measures, they drastically reduced the number of offspring.
