Purring practice

Catra held Finn against her chest as she rocked them gently. She started up a soothing purr and felt the kitten wiggle against her.

“What’s that?” Finn asked curiously as they moved to look up at Catra with big eyes. Catra smiled down at them.

“I’m purring,” Catra said softly “My mum used to do it for me when I was feeling sick or sad, but it can be used to show you are happy or feeling loved too,” Catra explained and watched the blonde kitten scrunch their face in consideration.

“Can I, do it?” Finn asked and Catra smiled. Finn didn’t know any other Magicats and from what she could tell Finn’s father left Adora almost immediately after she got pregnant.

“Of course, I can show you how to force it, but once you practice it will come naturally when you need it” Catra offered moving the kitten to give a breath of space between them.

Catra pointed to the part of her chest where her rumbling was loudest.

“It’s like humming, but it's deeper in your chest, humming is up here in the throat,” Catra said and made a humming noise as she pointed to her throat and moved her finger down as the sound morphed into a base-y vibration in her chest. Finn giggled at the display and put their little hand on her sternum curiously.

Catra purred for them for a little longer until Finn’s ears droop self-consciously.

“What if I can’t do it?” Finn asked, unsure.

“If you can’t do it right away you can always practice, but if you don’t want to do it that’s ok too. It won’t make you any less of a Magicat if you don’t want to purr,” Catra reassured as she bundled the kitten back against her chest to resume their nap. She purred loudly for them and after some time she was convinced that Finn had fallen asleep. A soft stuttering purr proved her wrong when Finn gasped with excitement. Their little face pinched with focus before they looked up at Catra with big, excited eyes.

Catra quieted her purring to listen better and heard the start and stop of a kitten’s purr. Catra squeezed them and trilled with excitement. Finn knew the sound and echoed it with the same enthusiasm.

“You did it! You’re a natural,” she praised, and Finn glowed under the positive attention. After some careful attempts they seemed content to snuggle close and nap with Catra. Catra resumed her purring while Finn butted under her chin to find the optimal location to sleep and Catra wiggled until she was comfortable. They both seemed to find the perfect spot in the same moment as they both sighed and went limp.

Catra hadn’t been in a cuddle pile since she was much younger with her mother, but she realised now how much she missed it. It was so relaxing, and she slept so deeply with a little kitten clinging to her.
