"Shrinking Virus 2" FX Vote

Alright, so the FX/animation are still being worked on for this clip, and it's very in-depth compared to a lot of other projects. There are a good amount of near-misses at floor-level, and animation of the tiny guy reacting to that. So I started thinking: with a project with so much put into the FX already, I wonder if things like booming sounds and visual shakes for the footsteps should be used.

On one hand, it takes a lot of extra work, and it can get cartoonish, or even annoying. For a video like this, it would extend the editing time. On the other hand, it can add a lot to the immersion value, the feeling of scale, and the drama.

Ordinarily, I will just make a gut choice for this type of thing, but when talking about a video in which there might be hundreds of footsteps, it will certainly affect the editing time. In fact, I think it would push the video into December. In that case, I would find a video that's quicker to edit to release in November.

Part of me says "Why not go all-out?" ... The other part says "Because time."

So this really feels like a good time to ask you guys: Booms and Shakes, or No?

UPDATE: Vote "NO" if you want me to make a Booms and Shakes version LATER (December or after) as a Star Patron bonus.

Love the booms especially when it's paired with slow motion. You are the best in the biz at it. I feel like it's part of the brand!

Kilo Bug

I agree with you in a lot of cases. But to me, it depends on the camera angle. If we're looking down for example... No booming. And that also depends on the clip.

I'm in the minority here, which is just fine. I'm weird, haha. I don't like booms and shakes. Always takes me out of it. I adore just... Regular audio, because it makes the tinies getting squished feel *smaller* to me. Like they're just smol and insignificant. Booms and shakes to me always feel... Tacky. But that's just my personal preference. I understand why people like it. It's just never been my cup of tea. I personally think having both would be the best option for everyone to be happy but it's up to democracy to decide!

I hear you. I can't say I'll do it perfectly but I will say that it won't be nearly that extreme.

Right but let’s take the content creator “GSF”, he has the best slo mo scenes and the scaling is beautiful. As soon as you hear the stomps, it is the shittiest audio effect including excessive camera shaking. It gotta be firm, to the point, and each stomp wants to make you feel like goosebumps on your neck

Wow thank you! That's really kind of you and great to hear! Maybe it's something I should do a little more often.

The sound effects and booms make it feel so real and separates the quality of other videos and people that make this type of content, Fully fine on waiting. Appreciate you man man! You are kicking ass on these. Diet soda still my favorite video, and shrinking virus is my second. Those types of videos are what I live for 👍🏼 and the subtle booms and light shaking enhance it substantially

It was a high-effort audio edit at the time. Now I can't stand all the treble but besides that, yeah, I was happy with the sound design on that one. I don't mind taking the time to do that kind of thing when I'm allowed to.

Subsin13

Rock/debris type of sounds are usually reserved for buildings and things like that being crushed, but I take your point.

Subsin13

I like the booms and shakes but not to a ridiculous degree. I think the first Shrinking Virus had great-sounding booms, so I guess I'd ask to try to recreate that with the effects.

Fred Fredson

Booms and shakes but don’t overdo it. Really hate it when there are booms that sound all cartoony like rocks being smashed. Just firm, quick booms that are not excessively loud and stupid

RinzlerLegacy

Okay, Let's assume booms and shakes could be added later for a Star Patron release. If you want that, just vote for the first option: "NO"

Subsin13

That's another possibility. Could add booms and shakes later for a Star Patron Tier bonus. I'll do it that way if "NO" wins.

If we want a release in November, would there be no chance of a boom and shakes version down the line?

Dccel

I love the booms and shakes personally. Get me more in the feeling if ya know.
