A commission for last_of_workers

It’s been a couple months since GLaDOS joined me here in this world, and as bad as I thought being here would be when I first got here, it’s actually been quite interesting now that there’s two of us from my world here.

Since GLaDOS arrived, we’ve been working every day to build a machine that would use the same energy that passed over us and sent us to this world to create a portal that hopefully will send us back home.

Of course, I didn’t end up in the body of a super smart robot, so I’m not much help in that department. Instead, I had a bunch of other things I did. One being helping the humans that were imprisoned here back up to the surface and helping them build a new town and set up farms.

GLaDOS and I agreed that it was best to set them free since she wasn’t putting much effort into rebuilding the facility and instead only building new tests, the machine, and keeping my room on so I had somewhere to hang out.

So there was no need for the other humans to be here, so we sent them off to start new lives. Now when I’m not talking or helping out when those humans, I’m back down here with GLaDOS testing chambers and new things she came up with.

That’s basically my full-time job. I think I spend about eight hours a day testing, and while it sounds like a lot, it’s actually a lot of fun. Not only does it help keep my mind sharp, but it’s a nice workout that keeps my body fit, and not to mention, I love all the gadgets and things she comes up with.

Since this isn't our world, there are so many things we can do here that are not possible in our original world. Like those tractor beams, GLaDOS was able to take it and add it to the portal gun, so now I can use it to pull myself to walls or push myself away from them.

It’s like a grappling hook, which is super awesome. Sometimes when I’m bored, I’ll use it to push myself high into the air and fall down, landing on my long fall boots. Another cool thing GLaDOS made was pocket cubes.

As the name suggests, they’re mini cubes that can fit into my pocket, and when I pull them out and shoot them with a portal, they grow to full size. So now I can collect them in chambers and use them in the next one, which allows GLaDOS to make more advanced chambers.

Ones that I can cause me to lose if I misuse my resources. Say I use two in a chamber that only needs one, but in the next chamber I need two and only have one; that means I have to start over from the beginning and give GLaDOS a win for a change.

It’s truly a lot of fun, and I love this new nice GLaDOS so much more than the old mean one, and honestly, we get along great. We’re basically best friends now and tell each other everything, which makes sense as we spend almost all our time together.

Every so often, GLaDOS will stop a test and tell me that she thinks she got the machine to work and was about to test it, then I’d head up to her room and watch her activate it, but so far none of her attempts have worked yet.

The first three blew up; one vanished into thin air after it was activated, another simply fried all its internal components, and the last one, well, a portal opened up, but it vaporized anything that passed through it.

So while I’m excited to see it work, I’m not very confident it will; after all, GLaDOS said something about the energy this machine needs to create. Apparently it’s not even from this world but instead needs a machine to pull it in from the borders between worlds.

She also theorized that someone back at the convention might have made such a machine, or a machine malfunctioned and caused this effect, and when it passed through everyone, it sent their consciousness flowing through the universe.

She also thinks that the game everyone was playing, or even close to, might connect to the world they end up in, since we were both playing Portal 2 at the time and ended up as characters in Portal, but she’s not entirely certain on that one, as her sister never made it here.

She could still be back at the convention, or simply in another world entirely. Once I make it to GLaDOS’ room, I find ATLAS and P-Body at a table working on something very small, with GLaDOS giving them instructions on what to do.

She welcomes me to her room and pulls out a fridge with several cold drinks for me to choose from since I was a bit sweaty and tired from the last test. She then begins telling me about the changes she made to the machine and the data from the initial scans.

I… I did not understand anything she said. I just smiled, nodded, and sipped my drink as she went on. I honestly felt like I was watching some sci-fi movie with all the big words she used that I’d never be able to say, nevermind know what they meant.

Once she was done, she turned on the machine. We watched as a black portal opened up; it looked unstable at first, but it quickly stabilized, and GLaDOS got a clear ready from it. She then said we had to test it to make sure it doesn’t vaporize anything, so I tossed my bottle of water into the portal.

It wasn’t vaporized, and it went right through. So it was safe to go through, but was what was on the other side safe? We had to find that out, and GLaDOS wasn't going to test it, and she wasn’t going to let me test it, so she asked ATLAS and P-body to go through, look around, and come back.

We watched them walk through the portal, and for a few minutes I wondered if they were coming back. I mean, they were just normal robots, not real people like GLaDOS and myself, but I liked hanging out with them and doing tests together as a team.

Luckily, they came back about ten minutes later holding some items that I recognized. ATLAS had a mushroom, and P-Body had a Fire Flower, both from Super Mario. GLaDOS closed the portal and checked the footage from their memory.

She confirmed that it was indeed a world based on Super Mario World. We were both excited, and I couldn’t wait to go visit it. That’s when GLaDOS told me something: currently she can't control which world the portal opens up to, so they’ll have to travel across a bunch of different worlds to find theirs.

She did have some good news. Not only did she have a new portal gun for me, one that doesn’t need white surfaces to work, but she also had new mods that allow me to use most of the types of crazy mechanics she uses in tests, like gels, tractor beams, and light walls.

That meant whatever world we end up in, I’ll still have my portal gun and not be useless. On top of that, she made something that I can use to transport her. She calls it the mini-core, which is a hundred times more powerful than her current one.

She also said she was going to work on it a bit more and that she should be able to make it so she can open new dimensional portals from the new universe so that we don’t have to come back here just to visit a new world.

The best part about her new core is that it’s super light weight, small, and clips onto my clothes. So that's where GLaDOS and I are at. We broke through the bounds of reality, and now, using energy that comes from the spaces in between universes, we’ll soon travel across them.

I don’t know what we’ll find, but we hope to find our original world, and if not, perhaps we can find other people from it who have been sent to strange new worlds just like us, and maybe just maybe one of them will know a surefire way to get home.

Until then, though, my best friend GLaDOS and I will travel the multiverse with ATLAS and P-Body by our sides, and we’ll enjoy the adventure that surely awaits us. Now, it’s time for me to do what I do best, which is jumping through portals.

Nah, no clue about an ending. It was supposed to be a series without one, though. That way I could keep making more and more. Much like my cursed object and Object Tf series. Though I do tend to add bits or lore to it as time goes on, but that's not what's important here; what's important is the characters and crossovers!
