Santos was a big fan of the game Atomic Heart. He’d played the entire game several times, done both endings, and even played the DLC. He loved shooting his way through the game as Major Sergey Nechayev, or to those who played the game P-3.
He loved it so much that he was one of the first people to arrive at the convention and head to the room where Mundfish would be announcing their newest game. Santos picked a random seat and looked up at the stage eagerly waiting for the presentation to begin.
The host comes out, greets everyone, and starts talking vaguely about their newest game. He then steps out of the way to renew the big screen behind him. He then pointed at the screen and everyone watched as the name of the new game appeared.
As Santos hoped it was a new Atomic Heart, with the title being Rings Of Restoration. Santos was wondering if that meant it took place after the trapped in limbo ending, where P-3 went to find the rings he tossed in the ocean.
The screen then flashed to a release date, which was later this year. The crowd roared in amazement, but the cheers were about to get better. The host said that there was another surprise, and then he pointed at the screen.
Next to the release date, it said playable in full dive virtual reality. Santos thought that sounded amazing, so much so that he might actually buy a full dive set just to play it. The presentation continued with some gameplay.
Then two women that looked like real versions of the twins appeared. One held a full dive headset, while the other had a bowl with paper in it. The host then asked the crowd if someone wanted to try it out. Everyone began to scream yes.
The host then walked over to the twin with the jacket and picked a piece of paper out. He called out a chair number and said they were the winner. Well, that number just so happened to be the chair Santos was on. He was so excited, he was going to be one of the first people to play the new game.
He got on stage, and the other twin put the headset on him and turned it on. Santos was pulled from reality and his body and put into the tough and handsome P-3. Santos was standing in the same place where P-3 had thrown the rings into the ocean before.
P-3 started talking about finding the rings, but before he could start he got attacked. Santos pulled out a gun and started shooting. Santos was amazed at how detailed and real it felt. Each pull of the trigger felt like a real gun, his powers felt real and were super cool to see this close.
He beat the enemies and the next cut scene started, but that's when things got weird. The game froze and started skipping dialogue, and eventually, the game crashed and Santos was left floating in a black void.
Santos never used a full dive set before, so he wasn’t sure what to do, or how to close the game and get out. So he floated there hoping that someone outside would notice a problem and help him. That did eventually happen, but only after what felt like an eternity.
Santos was pulled back to reality. She opened her eyes and sat up to see the host and a group of medical professionals and scientists around her. Then the strangest thing happened, she opened her eyes and sat up again.
Santos was now seeing out of two sets of eyes. Both sets of eyes were in the same room, so she turned her head to see what was going on. That’s when both sets of eyes looked upon one of the women from the presentation.
Santos was confused, how was she seeing out both of their eyes? Santos asked what was going on, and both twins spoke at the same time, slightly confusing everyone in the room because they weren't sure which one to address.
The host steps forward and says he’ll explain. He starts at where Santos last saw him. Santos put on the headset and went into full dive. The crowd, the host, and the twins were watching him play on the big screen.
Then the headset started to hum and they knew there was a problem. The host ordered the twins to remove the headset from Santos, but when they tried a big shock occurred, zapping Santos and the twins.
The headset exploded, sending the twins back and killing Santos. It was a horrible tragedy, and the host apologized several times. Santos seemed to understand that, but he still didn’t understand how he was in the body of two women.
The host then seemed sort of thrilled about that part. He explained that the zap actually copied Santos' subconscious into the twins, overwriting their AI. Santos was a bit shocked, he pressed his hand against his body.
Sure enough, both bodies were actually robots and not human. The host then explained that, much like Ekaterina in the game, Santos’ consciousness was split in two, one placed in each of the twins. He then said they had to do a bit of work to reconnect them, that way Santos could be whole.
Santos was grateful that they were able to do that for her, she couldn't imagine how strange being half of herself into two bodies would be, then again, being one of her in two bodies was also very strange.
She could hear everything twice, she had two sets of eyes that were seeing different things, and despite being a robot, she still seemed to be able to hear and smell things, it was likely simulated, but she was still experiencing it, and twice at the same time.
They then gave Santos some time to process the situation alone. Of course, now that she’s got two bodies, she’s not really alone. After they left, she stood up, well both of her stood up. She then turned to face herself, but both of her bodies turned left.
She wasn’t used to operating two bodies and was sending the same commands to both bodies. It was a lot like that thing parents tricked their kids with by telling them to pat their heads and rub their bellies at the same time, it was hard to focus on doing things differently.
After a few failures at controlling them separately, she realized she had already done it earlier when she woke up. Perhaps she was over-focusing. She then relaxed and allowed her brain to acclimate to her body.
Then she calmed down. Once she did, she was easily able to control each body separately. This allowed her to really get a look at her bodies. Although there was a whole lot to them. They were pretty advanced robot bodies, but they were nothing like the twins in the game, at least not yet.
Despite that, she still felt stronger than she was, obviously didn't need to eat, sleep, or even go to the bathroom anymore, she probably didn't get tired, and she looked pretty durable. She was also connected to the internet.
She could search for things nearly instantly, and even download games and play them without a console or controller. Those things were pretty neat, although Santos wasn’t too thrilled at being female robots, but if she had to be any she was glad it was the twins.
She then left the room to see the people from earlier waiting for her. They talked a bit about trying to find a way to get her a new body and put both sides of her brain into it, which could take a while, so they offered to take care of her every need until that happened.
Santos thanked them, and life went on. It was a bit difficult at first to adjust to everything, but as more time passed, Santos became more and more comfortable with her bodies and was able to use them without any difficulty.
She can now easily move both bodies separately and have conversations with two different people in two completely different areas without mixing up the conversations. Hell, she’s so good now she can dance with herself.
In the months since the accident, she’d been traveling around the world promoting the new game at every convention she could. Thanks to being an AI now, she could instantly speak and understand any language, so she was able to speak with fans everywhere she went.
Santos absolutely loved the attention they gave her. They always wanted pictures and even autographs from her, which has caused quite a few heated debates with fans, as she signs as left and right as both bodies.
She does that because, in the game, P-3 calls the one wearing the jacket Right, while Sechenov refers to her as left. Luckily Santos doesn’t really have to worry about it since she’s one mind controlling the bodies, but she does find it fun to mess with people.
So that’s the story of how Santos ended up as the Twins from Atomic Heart. She may be like this for a long time, or perhaps forever who knows? She does know two things, being the Twins is pretty cool, and when the game comes out she’s playing it nonstop until she beats it.
