* The title of the episode, "Live Bait", refers to Philip's actions throughout the episode: * He makes no effort to dodge the walker he passes by in the town and finally decides to lay down in the street to die. * He goes into the nursing home, which is infested with walkers. Some of these walkers are restrained, either by wheelchairs or strapped to tables, implying that they had been left behind either because they were bitten or as walker bait. * It may also refer to the words "Live Bait" seen on a road sign when Philip and the Chamblers are running from a group of walkers. * The original title for this episode was "Rise". * The episode's exact runtime is 00:42:59. * David Morrissey (The Governor/Philip) is reinstated in the opening sequence for the first time in Season 4 since being removed from the last five episodes. * This is the first episode where only one series regular appears. * This is the first episode mainly focused on an antagonist. * This also the first episode of the show to not feature any member of the Atlanta Camp. * Due to being series regulars, this is the first time in which Chad Coleman (Tyreese) and Lawrence Gilliard Jr. (Bob) are credited in an episode in which they do not appear. * There are a number of parallels between the Governor's journey in this episode and Rick's journey in S1EP1 "Days Gone Bye". * The episode begins with a scene showing the last moments of the men's lives before starting over. In Rick's case, this was the shootout before he went into a coma. In Philip's, the night following the fall of Woodbury * Following these scenes, both wake up alone to find that two people have abandoned them and must journey into the world. * Both men happen upon fellow survivors at the moment of exhaustion. * The first human contact for each protagonist after they set out on their journeys is a family holed up trying to survive the disaster. For Rick, this is Morgan and Duane. For Philip, this is Lily and her family * With both families, the respective protagonist bonded with a child of the family. * For both protagonists, helping the family kill a now-undead relative resulted in character development. In Rick's case, helping Morgan find the apparent courage to shoot his wife gave him the strength to go out and face death himself. In Philip's case, having to kill David, and the resulting fear Meghan had of him, caused him to burn his family photo and commit to the future. * Both Rick and Philip encounter a group containing someone from their past following a skirmish with the walkers and both reunions are complicated by events having occurred between their last meeting and now. In Rick's case, this complication was Lori's affair with Shane. In Philip's, it appears to be that Martinez has taken on a leadership role and no longer needs him. Both later kill the person due to leadership problems. * The song included in the episode is "The Last Pale Light in the West" by Ben Nichols * This is the first episode to be a complete flashback from current time similar to Issue 43, nicknamed the "flashback issue" * In an interview with David Morrissey, it was explained that the burning of the only photo that Philip has of his family means two things: * He folds the corner of the photograph and blocks himself out of it. And that is blotting himself from his past and seeing only the best of it, which was his wife and his child. * When he burns the photograph, it is a commitment to his future, to Lilly and Meghan. In order for him to look forward, he cannot have any connection to his life as the Governor. He cannot have anything from his past. He must commit fully to this new life. * In this episode, most of the material is adapted from the Novel Series: * Philip killing the zombified David Chambler is adapted from Rise of the Governor * David, Tara, and Lilly (named April in the novel) are characters from Rise of the Governor, but they have the last name "Chalmers". * Philip choosing the name Brian mirrors the end of the novel where Brian takes Philip's name. The Governor in the novel is named Brian Blake and is Philip's older brother. * Philip passes by a barn filled with scribbled messages left by survivors meant for loved ones and friends. The names mentioned on the barn include: Brian Heriot, Megan Cook, Chad Krear, Ken Jones, Molly Thore, Casey Brewer, Mollica, and Jim.

When I was a kid my mom had a friend that shot himself in the head and survived. He had a big portion of his skull missing. Like a huge indentation. It really scared me as a kid because I knew he did it himself but also that he survived and still functioned.

And even MORE accurate; no one is consistent in .... such extreme behavior. I don't know anyone who JUST does bad shit all day every day lol and idk anyone who would follow someone like that. And no one can face such stress or do some shit.... stopping even way before what he did lol without hurting themselves. Everything is connected folks say. And that actually is the truth in... a lot of dif ways. he is an actual human, at the end of the day. so this wasn't so surprising to me and it was very refreshing, for me lol They ain't tryin to..... redeem him or have anyone forgive. from what I can tell at least. lol esp considering... I'll just leave it at that lol. But nothin wrong with it, to me lol esp with such a good actor. f all that ... "iiiii am GOOD" ... "well I am eeeevillllll" ... naw man n this show is a lil to close to that, as it is lol it's beautiful to see some realism, in a villain. Hell in any character lol that's one thing this show can lack, to one extent or another. So any time we see some actual soul and sadness in a show about... the end of the goddamn world lol and a reminder of what THAT does to folks. it ain't like... I won't say any names but way after this show sucks ; way down the line .... now THAT was beyond humanization and realism, what they try there lol now THAT is corny lol but shit.... hell these couple episodes are some of my favs in the whole series

I just don't get sleeping with a guy with others in the same tent cough Lori cough and now Lily with her sister and child. The place the guvnor and his men camped for the night was the same place he killed all the National Guards men, then took their truck and went back to destroy Woodsbury. And even tho I like the guvnor there is no redeeming him. It doesn't matter if he saved Megan's life. Also I would have never invited him into my house or left my kid with him. RIP to the Dad.

2025-04-25 16:57:19 +0000 UTCi hated this episode. i hate the governor. i hate when shows try to humanize evil characters. he is a psychopath end of story. he cannot be redeemed or forgiven for everything he has done. plus the unthinkable disgusting things he planned on doing to michonne…yeah no he signed his ticket to hell a long time ago, ain’t no refunds or take backs. he’s “too far gone” iykyk. it was nice to see other groups and survivors and how they’ve been dealing with the apocalypse tho. and as others have stated in the walking dead universe there is no zombie lore (i.e. movies, tv shows, comics, etc.) so they had never heard of zombies or even knew that it was a thing. they never knew to shoot them in the head or how you can get infected (although this was the first zombie show to have the humans be infected already). but like you said brandon from process of elimination if you’re shooting a zombie and body shots do nothing you should try a headshot too not just give up.

So they genuinely have no idea what a "zombie" is hence why every different group we've encountered so far has a different name for them, and a lot of people don't know to "go for the brain"

His younger brother's name was Philip and Penny was actually his brother's daughter. After his brother and niece died, he took on his brother's identity as his own persona as like to absolve him from his own personal insecurities he had in the past by becoming his more put together younger brother, going by Philip and was acting like his dead niece was really his daughter. Dude was an absolute madman...

That's why you hear everyone called them everything BUT zombies(they did a couple of times in the comics, but I think that was more of a goof from the creator forgetting that they weren't supposed to be called zombies. They were actually mainly called "roamers" a lot. Different types of zombies had different names like lurkers, which are the ones who were more lazy/docile ones sitting in one place, until something comes across their attention like the one that got Herhsel's leg. Easy to kill, but also easier to sneak up on you). Of course there are cultures in like folklores where there is a concept of be some type of other like in Hatian Voodoo but the zombies are created, controlled, and used as slaves by bokors, or there's revenants which are from European folklore(France, I think). Even Hershel made a referenced to the Bible in season 2, "I can't profess to understand God's plan, but Christ promised the resurrection of the dead. I just thought he had something a little different in mind." But zombies as it is engrained in our pop culture doesn't exist, so it's not a widespread known thing until it happened. So unlike us, who would have an idea on how to handle zombies because we have the awareness of the concept, the world was thrown in on the deep end of some shit forreal and had to learn through trial/error and just getting through life without movie & TV shows to reference from...

My grandfather smoked so much the food tasted awful due to the smoke. It's amazing my grandma didn't get lung cancer. We probably saw the same video with the nicotine and tar all up in the car ...so disgusting. I wish they made kids watch it in highschool
