Read everything about them, visited their skulls in the dungeons and dreamed of the freedom of riding one. So him actually seeing a dragon was a HUGE thing for him.

Also I have a theory about the Doom of Valeria but first I have not seen season 2 of House of the Dragon nor have I read the books. I think the Doom of Valeria was a dragon. I use to think it was a plague which mutated into grey scale but now I think it was a dragon that flew over and burnt everything.
