2021 February Q&A Live!

HSB: I'd definitely need to watch more to touch on it, and the misogyny is definitely not a purely HSB issue (I love Cheers but that isn't exactly friendly to women either). One thing that is especially challenging about going back in time is figuring what is descriptive and what is prescriptive intent and what comes off that way to the audience. I mean that's a challenge for modern shows too but at least we're a bit more aware of the context British shows: Interesting you say that because I know Riz Ahmed has been public about minority representation in British shows but again I don't want to speak out of turn on something I'm not super familiar with. Format: I'm glad you like it! I definitely want it to be something that we can all enjoy!

Thanks for answering my questions - great answers! It's interesting that the misogyny of HSB stood out to you b/c the way I remember it, one of the things the show was praised for was that it consciously incorporated the misogyny that was rampant in society (and in particular in a conservative institution like law enforcement) at the time in a "realistic" manner, and showed a broad range in both type and response. It didn't always stick the landing, but it was still miles beyond what anything else was doing. I can see why focusing on an 80s show might be a tough sell for a modern audience though. Good point about the cultural context of British shows - like I always say about any number of things, "context matters." I guess I was thinking about it as "Watching a British show as an American," which you touched on. For instance, one of the things that frequently stands out to us is that it's quite common for there to be black (and more recently South Asian) actors in a variety of roles that are not explicitly "the black cop" or whatever, in a way you don't typically see in most American shows. It's noticeable. Re: the format - the pre-recorded format happens to work well for me, b/c I frequently have something else scheduled when you're doing a live Q&A, so I submit my questions beforehand and watch later regardless. Sorry I can't offer an opinion about the "live" aspect, but it's a datapoint nonetheless. Cheers!
