STEVEN UNIVERSE 4X14 "That Will Be All" Full Length Reaction

ooooohhh boy, this episode was incredible, even tho i still prefer "Steven's Dream" due to how brilliant the built-up to Blue Diamond's Debut was..... this one is a very close second. It's great we get to see so many Amethysts that came from the Prime Kindergarten just like ours did, we even get see a new Jasper and a Carnelian, one being skinny and the other being short just like our Amethyst... this makes sense due to the fact that they came from the Beta Kindergarten... which thanks to Peridot we know that it was a rushed job that resulted in 99% of it's gems being "defective", well... except for the only other jasper we know who came out Perfect xdd. As a fun fact: just like the 2 other pearls were voiced by our pearl's VA... all the amethysts in this episode were voiced by Michaela Dietz, and both Skinny Jasper and Carnelian were voiced by Kimberly Brooks. Now... just in case it wasn't clear.... all those Bubbled Gems in the room where the diamonds met are Rose Quartzes. Very interesting situation to take into account. I love the scene between Blue and Yellow Diamond, it showcases their personalities perfectly.... Yellow is stern, firm, and pragmatic (for the most part) while Blue is a melancholic mess due to her grief. i also loved that the show finally allowed for one of the Diamonds to have their own song, after all both Patti LuPone (Yellow) and Lisa Hannigan (Blue) are professional singers. And i was also very impressed with Deedee's performance as Blue and Yellow Pearl... she reached very high notes with them. You mentioned that the music that plays every time the Diamonds are on screen sounded like an accordion and it is indeed very similar.... but im pretty confident that their signature sound it's actually a Synth Organ, after all the Organ is often called "King of the Instruments" so it would make sense to use it as the theme of the Gem Matriarchs. During Yellow's Song "What's the Use of Feeling (Blue)" she reveals some small but very intersting details... like the jobs of certain Gems.... "An Agate Terrifies" which kinda justifies why she's such a Bossy Administrator, and.... "A Lapis Terraforms" which does explain why Lapis has the power to control All Water around her, they are tasked to terraform planets before the full process of colonization begins. the title and chorus of the song it's very clever too, it's Yellow asking the question (of why keep feeling sad) as well as Adressing Blue Diamond herself. But even if she's advocating for leaving the grief behind.... she still takes a moment to acknowledge that she also misses Pink Diamond..... but she decided to focus on her work and continue to be productive. Once again adding more complexity and nuance to Homeworld as a whole. To finish my comment... i liked how this episode was named after the phrase that has been used throughout this entire arc "That Will Be All". we heard Blue Agate say it to Pearl in "Gem Heist" for the first time.... and then it was used 3 more times this episode with Pearl being the one to deliver the final "That Will Be All" back to Agate. Absolutely Poetic xddd.

You may remember when they visited the Beta kindergarten amethyst mentioned how some of the holes looked misshapen and defective like she is, Skinny and Carnelian are like her!

Something I really enjoy about this episode's song is how it instantly provides depth to Blue and Yellow Diamond- characters who, otherwise, might easily just come across as entirely generic antagonist figures. They're still cold and oft cruel to the Gems under their service (like… oof, the complete tone shift in the way Yellow addresses a fellow diamond and then the way she addresses Holly Blue, who is under her in rank), but it's interesting to see how they have vulnerabilities, too- both mourning the loss of the diamond Rose shattered, but in diametrically opposed ways. Blue breaks outwards, wallowing in her grief... and Yellow seems to be breaking inwards, the lyrics of her song ("what's the use in feeling, Blue?"/"what's the use in feeling blue?") posing not only a clever double meaning, but also showing how she's coping by trying to NOT show emotion at all. A method which clearly fails her, as she's close to tears by the end of her song anyways. I just really like how relatable this show continues to make its antagonistic characters- life is complicated, WAR is complicated, and as this episode so deftly shows, it's left gaping chasms on all sides of the conflict. Great episode. Notably, this is a rarer one that Rebecca Sugar themself also did board work on- some of the key shots of the diamonds during the song were done by her. I always like how Sugar does expressions. I am also constantly delighted by how much you always vibe with the background tracks- both in this show and plenty others, ahah. There really are so many great jams in this show’s OST, it’s definitely one I’d recommend checking out in greater depth once you’re done with the series.
