Aaaaand here comes the moment where Steven unlocks every main protagonist's most crucial element...PTSD.

The Spider King

This episode was a really big one, not just in the narrative sense but in terms of production as well... The animation of the episode itself was much better and fluid than usual... and that's because they got Takafumi Hori from Studio Trigger as a Guest Animator. In case you don't know Studio Trigger is responsible for very popular Animes such as Kill La Kill, Little Witch Academia and Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Also i think you got a little confused.... Stevonnie's voice is not done by Connie's VA (Grace Rolek), Stevonnie has their own voice actress which is AJ Michalka, so when you hear Stevonnie sing... you just hear Stevonnie (AJ), not Connie. But now that i think about it... this episode makes even happier now, because without it we wouldn't have had the privilege of hearing Catra sing xddd (AJ Michalka is also the voice of Catra from She-ra).

I love just how many reactors who watch this episode say that it came to them at a very important time— it really goes to show how powerful fiction is as a tool to help us understand and process our own realities. Literally can’t thank the crew of this show enough for the wonderful characters and stories they’ve carved, they’ve provided such comfort to me when I’ve needed it most— this episode especially. Anyways, I hope you and everyone else in this comments thread are able to continue to forge forwards to find the harmony and balance y’all deserve in your worlds.

Waaay back in season 1, there was an episode (I think it was “Serious Steven”?) where Steven got chased around by a mob of butterflies and was yelling about them, and Garnet just gently shooed them away and said “They’re just butterflies…” I don’t know if this was an intentional connection, but I think about that moment a lot with this episode in mind. Sometimes we just get absolutely smothered in our own thoughts and it’s hard to see their truth clearly- that they’re just thoughts. The mere act of meditating upon them will not harm us, and might in fact provide us with much needed reflection to help make a choice in reality. This is a stunning episode. I’ve shown the song from this one to friends with zero context of the show before as a self care aid, and they all loved it. What I especially liked about the mindfulness sequence is the contrast in how Ruby and Sapphire are shown interacting with the butterflies (with their “thoughts”)… Ruby is absolutely frazzled by her one single problem, which makes sense as she’s the one with the shortest fuse. But she’s also the first to successfully calm herself down, which then allows her to be of aid to Sapphire— who has been absolutely smothered by a swirling vortex of butterflies. I like the way they represent Sapphire’s anxieties here— she must see so many futures that terrify her. But her Ruby helps grounds her, helps her see the best path forward ;w;

TW: S- Ideation. When I was 16 I was having some not-very-good ideas about myself due to stuff I was going through at the time. This show was my biggest escape and I never expected it to help me so much... but then this episode aired and I felt so relieved in a way (?) idk it's hard to explain. All I know is this episode, and the song saved my life. Now I am almost 24... thanks to a silly little show about gay space rocks.
