Jonghyun - Picnic - Half Time Day 2015 Reaction

An incredibly vibey, jazzy performance, elevated by Jonghyun's phenomenal vocals and impressive range.

It’s true that Jonghyun’s music leans heavily toward R&B, but his discography is incredibly diverse, drawing influences from jazz, neo-soul, funk, trap, hip-hop, and more. Often, it’s a unique blend of various genres. Among these, his jazz and neo-soul sound stands out the most, setting him apart from other members, as they don’t really explore these styles. His natural vocal range was extraordinary—he could sing higher than many female vocalists. He possessed one of the strongest and most developed head voices among male artists, effortlessly delivering a significant portion of his solo work in head voice. It sounded so natural that it appeared effortless. However, his artistry wasn’t just about his vocal range; it was also about the stylistic choices he made. Jonghyun had remarkable control over his voice, allowing him to adapt it to suit the specific sound and genre of each song. His ability to adjust his vocal placement to perfectly match the desired style demonstrated his exceptional skill and creativity.

True, Jonghyun had plenty of such performances like The Agit concerts but of course SM never released them except that short version of The Story. Some of his Guerilla concert fan cams are pretty good quality though.

Jonghyun was a revolutionary artist in Korea in many ways. He was the first to release a fully self-written album under SM Entertainment and one of the pioneers in creating a significant body of work in composition and lyricism, both for himself and others. His efforts broke the boundaries and stereotypes of what "idols" are capable of achieving. He was also among the first to speak out against social and systemic injustices, such as discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and cyberbullying—issues that remain sensitive in Korea's conservative society. Performing a Tiny Desk Concert before it became trendy feels very much in line with his and SHINee’s forward-thinking style, haha. I do think he might have been mentally better off as an underground musician or a songwriter, which was his true passion. But at the same time, I’m grateful for the opportunity to have known the poet and artist that Jonghyun was.

There are no live backing vocals—just the band. What you might have heard is fans singing along. The backing track used was only for the ad-libs from the original tracks or when Jonghyun harmonized with himself, which, of course, would be impossible to do live as a solo performer. And no, the girl in Love Belt is not a backing vocalist—she’s the featured artist, Younha. Jonghyun was a social butterfly in the industry, with many friends across different labels who either featured in his songs or collaborated with him behind the scenes. His debut album, Base, which includes these songs, had the most featured artists—three in total: Younha on Love Belt, Zion.T on Deja Boo, and Iron on Crazy (Guilty Pleasure).

This Woman's Work is originally a song by Kate Bush from the 80's, Maxwell then re-released his rendition in the 90's, Jonghyun performed a cover of that. Totally agree that Jonghyun's voice and singing style is reminiscant of black singers and I think is pretty rare in Asians. Maxwell is an African American himself and Jonghyun said he has been a fan of his work since an early age. Maxwell actually visited and had a conversation with Jonghyun once on his Blue Night radio show where he praised Jonghyun's cover and artistry. They were also both inspired by Prince.

Both SHINee and Taemin did stuff like this but it was off camera, there are some fan cams floating around (my favorite is SHINee's OT5 version of in my room), but nothing in really good quality...

Deja Boo was promoted along side the title track of this album, SM didn't trust it as a title track because Jonghyun composed it himself, but the song proved them WRONG, it got an all kill and SM scrambled to create an MV for it and to claim it was a second title track (probably to save face..).

Taemin actually has RnB songs in his B-sides, you'll hear more of them when you go farther into his discography.. he covers a wide verity of genres in his solo work.

SHINee actually have a much more balanced fandom when it comes to men to women ratio than is common in kpop boy groups. last time there was a poll done for this it was closer to 50/50 than you would think. they also have a VERY wide range of ages.

The most famous version of This Woman's Work was probably performed by Maxwell in the 1990's. Yes the whole song is sung in falsetto, except towards the end of the song.
