SHINee never disappoints in either of their musical sides.

SHINee - 'Sleepless (Can't Leave)' & 'Breaking News' Live Performances Reaction

Comments

Oh, some more putting this into context within SHINee's career timeline - that performance of Sleepless Night (March 2014) was shortly before Onew took time off for throat surgery to treat vocal nodules (June 2014). His throat was in a pretty bad shape there, which is why he broke off that one note.

Obviously there are other great artists with great performances, but I have never seen anyone else with the same level of high performance and energy as SHINee does in their concerts. The intro alone are 5 back-to-back songs that not only have choreography but also are not easy to sing. There's a reason why groups in survival shows dread having a SHINee song to perform cause their title tracks mostly have a difficult choreography and requires a high vocal range.

I'm so happy that you're going to explore Jonghyun's music because he has a brilliant discography imho. Also, I have never, not even once, saw a SHINee performance that I would feel ashame of. That's why Shawols, as a fandom, has such a superiority complex. SHINee are the Princes of KPop. But they are also called the Kings of live performances.

I enjoy your reaction and could not wait for more SHINee/solos videos. Moreover, I think I need to share some information that might answer your questions regarding Taemin so called "past bad singing skill" narrative thats been around For context: https://youtu.be/0T8qFQqW9nE?si=1z69H07I5rmN3qW_ In one of their anniversary live with Eunhyuk of Super Junior few years ago, Key mentioned about their bad singing skills in the past. The members also thought it would be better to lipsyinc during their debut stage knowing how worst it was but Lee Soo Man opposed the ideas. You have reacted on the video and see how good their live was, so this statement does not make any sense. Even Eunhyuk was surprised hearing that. He said he actually saw SHINee perfomance before debut in SM practice room and their live singing skills were actually so great. Long story short, it turns out the trainer at that time always criticized members skills harshly, particularly in singing saying it was so bad no matter how good they were. The members actually believe that they were that bad (understandable because they were just teenegers during the trainee). This belief stays in their mind for a long time. You could find some clips where they themselves said that their skills were not great and they were not confident about that, including taemin story. The truth is, it was actually the harsh trainee methods and environment that made the members lost their confidence, and always felt anxious with their skills. Key also mentioned how they often put againts each other by asking them to find flaws in each other perfomance during training period. This resulted in some bad tension and pressure between them (yes, their training process was far from easy). SM training was known to be far more competitive and challanging than any survival shows, especially in the past. So they worked so hard to improve themselves. On top of that, Taemin also said he was at the stage where his voice was starting to change, thats why he did not sing that much. Fyi, Taemin once said that he even refused to debut with SHINee in the beginning because he thought he was not ready and not good enough but SM persuaded him. This is why everytime you guys reacted to their old videos and saw Taemin's singing, you kept wondering why people said he could not sing well in the past while in fact he sang well. Because many fans believe the narrative that Taemin "could not sing" in the past just because he had less lines without actually checking his old videos. It is also true that now they have much greater singing and dancing abilities than before. But I think people need to realize that they were never bad to begin with. Taemin did not go from "bad singer" to "great singer" like what many people believe. It is a big misunderstanding about his ability caused by some external and internal circumtances. Because why would SM loves to give them "experiemental songs" with high vocal and dance demands all while having less members than avarage group in kpop if they could not kill it. I know its too long but hopefully this infomation answers your questions :D It would be interesting if you could check their oldest live stages, radio lives, first concert or first album.

When it comes to the difficulty of choreography, it really depends on the specific routine rather than the style. Just because it’s hip-hop doesn’t mean it’s automatically more difficult, nor is pop necessarily easier to perform. Many of SHINee’s choreographies, especially their older ones, lean less toward hip-hop and more toward pop, contemporary, or even styles unique to them—but they’re still physically demanding. In some cases, I’d argue they’re even more challenging because they involve larger movements, jumps, and the sheer energy SHINee puts into their performances. Meanwhile, many modern choreographies tend to feature smaller, more intricate moves. An average SHINee performance is like an intense workout, especially when they perform four or five of these high-energy songs back-to-back. Imagine 20 minutes of sprinting—that’s the level of exertion they bring to their stages. As for groups introducing hip-hop elements to K-pop, let’s not overlook the fact that SHINee was essentially the first group to bring more complex and synchronized dancing into K-pop. This innovation led to dance practices becoming a standard and expected part of the industry. If you compare them to older 2nd-gen and 1st-gen groups, their choreographies were relatively simple with minimal movement. SHINee elevated the standard to an entirely different level.

I'm not quite sure what kind of comment you were trying to make about Jonghyun's vocals, but there’s really no song where his voice doesn’t fit, or anything even close to that. On the contrary, Jonghyun, more than anyone, is a vocalist who consistently synchronizes his technique and tone to suit the sound and style of each particular song. Yes, his voice is powerful, but that doesn’t mean he can’t sing softly. In fact, he has one of the most pleasant soft tones—comforting and relaxing to listen to. You’ll notice this more as you explore his solo work. As for Sleepless Night, the song is structured to build towards a culmination, with everyone increasing the intensity of their singing toward the end. I think the way Jonghyun sings it fits perfectly. He naturally takes on the highest parts of songs because of his impressive range. Jonghyun's voice is no doubt essential for SHINee and their sound, a lot of their most iconic older songs wouldn't be the same without him. BTW Jonghyun could play lots of different instruments: bass guitar (he's actually a bass player in a band that played rock and jazz music before SM scouted him), guitar, kazoo, piano, flute etc.

SHINee and f(x) had always been known as the more experimental and campy groups in SM from the 2nd generation. The fusion and experimental songs you often hear nowadays weren't as common back in the day and these two groups pretty much started it all. That is why a lot of their old music still sound fresh and not dated because of how innovative and ahead of time it was. It has to do with their concept and sound nothing else, EXO has just always been more 'normy' if you will, except a few odd ones out like Wolf.

And Nightmare too.

Breaking News is one of their Japanese singles from 2013 and the performance you watched is from the 2014 Tokyo Dome (and yes they always have bands play instruments live there). SHINee's Japanese music and in extension other Kpop group's music in Japan is usually quite different from Korean, of course they try to release things that work well in the market (it's more Jpop than Kpop technically). Same can be said about the choreography. Sure, it's an older song so maybe there's slight influence of that factor too, but I feel like their Japanese choreography is yet again different even to this day. Overall, that's just regular walk in the park for SHINee and I love it. You should watch and listen to more of their Japanese songs, including music videos. Breaking News also has one.

SHINee's discography has a pretty big ballad and slower song repertoire, I guess you haven't explored it as much as their upbeat side yet. There's particularly many Japanese ballads. The English title of the first song is Sleepless Night not Sleepless btw.

Lawol

Taemin joked that it's a shame he didn't debut with EXO because then he could have growled...

Ofra Cohen

You HAVE seen the gold outfits before, in the Dynamite performance...

Ofra Cohen

Breaking news actually has an MV as well.

Ofra Cohen

I really love that you guys are gonna react to Jonghyun cause unfortunately people don’t react to his wonderful music anymore.😢
