Fate of Ascension: Remake!

With the latest performance update, I wished many of our lag/crashing problems would vanish but unfortunately it only decreased the lag amount by a few.

Seems like a lot of people still can't play the game or play it in great difficulty.
So, here is the question:

Should I change the engine or keep using this one despite the increasing bugs and issues?

Should I keep the rpg format in another engine or make it a pure VN?

Since Patronpacas are the real owners of the Remake, this is %100 your choice.

⭐Choice 1) Change the engine, but keep the rpg format.

This means, I will remake the game as the same type of rpg but without the glitches and lags (hopefully) but this will take some time for me, so I will have to prioritize Oathbreaker during the change. I will keep you regularly updated, of course, but it won't be without delay.

πŸ’–pros: RPG format, no lag, new features maybe.

πŸ–€cons: Will take time to release the next chapters.

⭐Choice 2) Change the engine. Make it a pure VN/Otome.

This means I will have to remake the game as a pure otome. Meaning no exploration or quests. Just choices and minimal mini games. It will take a relatively less time to convert the game into this format. It will also take much less time between each chapters.

πŸ’–pros: Takes less to release each chapter.

πŸ–€cons: No gameplay. A little boring since it's a known story.

⭐Choice 3) Keep RPGMaker. Continue with bugs and glitches.

This means, I will keep the same engine. There won't be changes and I will continue as much as I can with it. Those who can play are already used to the commands and everything. It also means I can start working on chapter 2 right after the second part of OB S2 prologue.

πŸ’–pros: I can start working on it sooner. No delay.

πŸ–€cons: Bugs/glitches/lots of people can't play.

I will keep this poll until the end of this month, so feel free to take your time before you choose.

When I downloaded the game through the itch.io desktop app it worked perfectly (for the most part). I have a MacBook Catalina and when I try to download it directly it won't work/launch but when I do it through the desktop app I have no issues. Idk if this helps anyone.

XxCora

The rpg format is %100 more fun, but I need to be able to do it and people need to be able to play it. 😁 After this month, I'll see what I can do!

Rinmaru

Let me see what I can do with the engine first. If I can have it my way, it will definitely add a lot to the story. But I need to get familiar with the new engine first. πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•

Rinmaru

Bottom line, I want what's easier and more fun for you in the long term. It seems like RPG maker is giving you a lot of trouble and that Unity would be more fun and easier to work with in the long run. I love this story to bits and I'm willing to wait as long as it takes as long as you keep making it (γ₯οΏ£ Β³οΏ£)γ₯ I'm excited to see how it all works out and I wish you all the luck in the world!

Nicky s.

If you can keep the RPG elements and it adds something to the story instead of being window dressing, I'd say keep it. But if it's going to be an imposition to any part of the narrative, just make it a VN.

Sloane J. Watson

That's great! By the way I am stuck at the temple because I couldn't find offering for the elves. Where can I find it?

Lynossa

Yes, one of the doors is unlocked

Scarletrose92

Thank you so much, Scarlet! πŸ’–πŸ™‚ I'll do my best to give you a crash/bug free rpg with the new engine! :D

Rinmaru

Hi Lynossa! Yes, it will be possible to add different types of item indication to the game once the engine is changed. 🀩 πŸ’–

Rinmaru

Did you manage to pass the picklock in prologue?

Lynossa

Ascension is one of my all time favorite games. I love that you've taken a new approach to the game and, that were able to explore the world you created. I didn't have any issues with the game other then the lock pick option to open the door but, other then that I had a great time playing. I have been a huge fan of your work and, I finally got the chance to finish the first season of Oathbreaker. I say take all the time you need to make the game RPG if you wish. I look forward to your new projects :D

Scarletrose92

Hi, I'm new here. I discovered OB two days ago and I decided I need more, lol. Anyway, I tried Ascension but the game keep crashing so I didn't get to see much part of it. However from the parts that I managed to play, I have a concern related to the cursor. Usually in RPG the cursor will change when you hover on an item or a person (dialog bubble to chat or a hand to inform that it is an item to collect), Ascension doesn't have that and it was a bit confusing with clicking here and there hoping there's something. So if you decide to move to new engine, I hope you'll consider that function.

Lynossa

πŸ₯° I do think the rpg format was so exciting too! I know if I can fix the bugs, it'll be a really fun game for everybody!

Rinmaru

🀩🀩🀩

Rinmaru

🀩 I'm really really excited for everything too! This year will be πŸ’£!

Rinmaru

😍😍😍 I promise I'll do my best without overworking!

Rinmaru

Nothing is worse than releasing a game and realising %50 of your players can't play it. πŸ˜‚ I'll take a few months of working from scratch over so many sad and disappointed Patronpacas any day! πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

Rinmaru

It's not luck at all! You are making it happen! πŸ˜‰πŸ’–

Rinmaru

I think maybe if I take my time programming and have a proper schedule and a good plan, I can manage to fix it with Unity. I've been wanting to find an engine I can work with from now on, and Unity seems like the best option for me. Allows me to make many different forms of games, has lots of helpful guides and gives me so much freedom. <3 Just need a bit of time to get through the learning curve.

Rinmaru

😍

Rinmaru

Since this is a remake, the rpg format was one of the major things that made Ascension very exciting imo. Hopefully it can be done. :)

Rinmaru

I'm actually okay with either 1 or 2. I only get sad when most people can't even play it due to technical difficulties. πŸ₯°

Rinmaru

That's really cool to hear, Alyssa! πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

Rinmaru

πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

Rinmaru

First, let's wait for the poll to be over. Then we will figure out a schedule and what can be done and what can't be. Once I have a solid plan, it will be easy to work on it. :D

Rinmaru

πŸ’– I think on the contrary, the replay value increases with the rpg format unless I fill the game up with filler/grind quest. (Which I wasn't planning to! Honest!😜) I know the skip function makes things easier for VNs, but if done well, rpgs will give you a different experience every time you play them. I still play Dragon Age origins and Mass effect from time to time and discover things I've never seen even after 8+ years. And none of my Divinity play throughs will be the same etc. This is a reallllly cool genre which gives so many possibilities to creators. It's up to me to make it fun for 1+ play throughs. :) It will however take time, that is for sure. Although there is no reason why it would affect the story in a bad way, it will give me hell for a good couple of months until I figure everything out. 😬 Timing is the only issue I have with option 1. Especially since OB is my main game right now. It may be time I may have to ask outside help.

Rinmaru

To be honest, Ascension being a rpg was one of the things that made me really excited to work on it. I'm really hoping this change will work. πŸ™

Rinmaru

πŸ™ This many bugs definitely wasn't working on out. I don't want to give up on the rpg format, so it will be really really cool if I can move it to unity somehow.

Rinmaru

πŸ€— I want it to be really really fun for everybody. Hopefully the change won't be that painful!

Rinmaru

I was really excited about the rpg format too. Hopefully it won't take that long to build the same-ish system over at unity. 😬

Rinmaru

πŸ™‚ The rpg parts were definitely a lot of fun! Seems like most people want to keep it too. Let's see if that will change by the end of the month.

Rinmaru

I think it'd be overall better if everyone would be able to play it, even if it'd take a bit longer to make. Also I really enjoy the RPG element, I like being able to look around more than I was able to before. I'm a big fan of your work, you do an amazing job!

Lya

As everyone has said, I don't mind waiting if it means a new and better game-play experience :)

Mae

I LOVE the RPG work you've done, so if changing the engine make things easier (and fixes the bugs and glitches) go-ahead. I do not mind waiting, I am just excited to see what you have in store for us!

TheSapphireQueen

I'd love to have an RPG done by you, but like everyone else, I'd rather you do what feels best/what you'd prefer!! Please don't overwork yourself :) Your health comes first!

Stephanie

I, honestly, have not had a chance to try out the Ascension remake... but with all the glitches and crashes I kept hearing about, it deterred me from giving it a shot. If you have the option to fix it and make it available to a larger number of people, I will always say got with that option. It is important that all the love and care you put into the game shines and isnt bogged down by crashes and unplayable gameplay. I hope you decide to go with option one :) We will all still be here to cheer you on!

Victoria Martin

Whatever happens, I will support this game!! We are lucky to be getting a remake in the first place πŸ’–

otominei

Honest to goodness, I didn't have too many terrible bugs but the engine did crash quite a bit. I know I personally would not mind the longer development time for a smoother game play experience that doesn't sacrifice the new features (I'm always a slut for exploration) but the last thing I want as well is to overwhelm your workload! So I guess my answer is ideally I'd like to see if moving to a new engine helps but not at the cost of your sanity lmao.

Asher

It's worth taking the time to make it truly epic. I voted change the engine. We waited for Ascension and can wait again.

Anja Kidd

I honestly hadn’t thought about this, and it is a *really* good point!!!

BaerBrontide

I feel the same way, tbh. I never thought we’d get anything like this, so if we have to wait for it because we switch engines wherein we can all play without glitches, lag, and crashing, then it’s well worth it!

BaerBrontide

As much as I love the RPGMaker, it won't be as fun knowing some people won't be able to play of the glitches. Kinda like others said already, the RPG format brings adventure and excitement to a story the majority of already know. Hopefully a new engine helps with some of the issues

Kikiolana

Honestly, I'm really torn between option 1 and 2. I love, love, love your VN's but the direction you took with RPG Ascension is really interesting and new. (And gives me all the feels because party banters *_*)In the end it comes down (I think) to what you personally want. You're the artist, the final decision is yours. But thank you so much for showing that you value our opinions! <3

faebsel .

I think if you’re having problems with the engine then you should change it. I’m honestly excited to play it as an rpg or a visual novel, I feel like each have unique benefits.

Alyssa H

I think it's fair to say that no matter what you chose to do Rin, we'll all be hyped and excited about the remake.

LittleMink

I would prefer to keep the RPG style just switch engines if that makes it easier. I didn't think we were ever getting Ascension again and now we are so I have to wait longer, so be it. I will wait.

Court12413

If I may do, i wanted to share my humble opinion on this matter. I personally prefer the option 2, the one with the pure VN/otome, mainly because of one specific point: the replay value. The rpg element is really immersive and makes the story more interactive on the first run. But once you know the story and you want to replay to do another route, I think this rpg elements (mandatory side quests, combats, long walks between npc) make the next runs more tedious. That’s why I prefer the VN/otome format, it’s easier to skip some parts you have already seen multiple times, especially when you have so many romance and story options. It’s easier to navigate the story like this. Also I’m a little bit afraid that the coding of RPG elements will take a lot of resources and time, and that it maybe affect the story. For example, I would prefer to have these resources to have more side stories, banter between characters etc… But again, it’s only my opinion and in the end whatever you do, you will always have my support and I will still love your games <3

Slyve

I love the direction OB2 has taken with the Otome style, so beautiful and dynamic and INTENSE (i keep forgetting it's only part one... of the prologue... BIG HYPE for future chapters!) HOWEVER I think Ascension has great potential with the RPG format so I hold out hope that perhaps switching the engine will make it possible to keep that.

LukkaDev

I second all of these ^^ if it makes it less stressful on you I'm glad, and the rpg was fun and new from you in my opinion it would be interesting to see you make it like that, and seeing ascension in that light was fun, amazing and still nostalgic in it's own wonderful way. πŸ’–πŸ’– Thank you for everything

Riven

Honestly whatever will make it easiest on you Rin! You are so amazing and awesome for doing this for us and we love you for it!!! So do what is gonna make your life easier hon! ❀️

Jenni Atkinson

I voted to change the engine but keep the rpg format. The reason I voted this way is I am really interested in seeing what a rin rpg might be like. Your visual novels have been amazing-but I think more can be done in an rpg and I for one am really excited to see what that might be like. Bummer regarding the rpgmaker glitchy engine, graphics were wonderful but if it is bug city, yup.

Larry Behrendt

I'm all for making the best experience possible, even if it takes longer to complete. β™₯️
