I made a game about magnets

Phew! Here we are. After three long years of game dev... Mind Over Magnet is out. You can get it on Steam right now.

As I say in the video... this has been a wild ride! I've made so much stuff, learned so many things, and worked with so many cool people. And I'm really quite proud of the final product.

And yet... I think my overwhelming feeling... is just a sense of relief.

This project has felt like a bit of a millstone around my neck, at times. A constant, massive item on my mental to-do list. And it massively impacted GMTK as a channel as it took so much time away from making other types of videos.

For that, I can only apologise.

Then again - I have no regrets about making Mind Over Magnet. I don't mean the game is flawless (I'll talk about that later!), and I don't mean the production process was perfect (I'll definitely talk about that too!). But I think it was just so important to make this thing.

For one - I've always received a few comments asking "how can you run GMTK if you've never made a game". It's not a big concern - the comments are few and far between. And besides, I feel comfortable with my position as a journalist covering the industry from the outside. But hey - I have at least made a video game now!

And two - I learned so much while making this game. Stuff that I never realised while I was on the outside looking in. Stuff like - the importance of prototypes and playtests. The essential role of production. The emotional side of making a game. And just how dang hard everything is.

Those lessons - some specific, others more general - will inform all future episodes of GMTK. So I will never forget or regret the time I spent making MOM.

But I'm still glad for it to be done! I'm really excited for 2025 as I will be returning to fully, 100% focusing on Game Maker's Toolkit. I'm sure I'll be making more games - but that will be in my own time.
