If Rick's response is taken into consideration, while those people didnt die, the overall population numbers couldn't have been altered, so to get around that, the new reality writes so that the reason the number remained the same despite the victims getting deleted off the planet was that a bunch of people decided not to concieve at the same time, thereby maintaining the statistic down the line
