Subscription Billing Change

Oh look, another change Patreon is foisting upon us, but this time it's Apple's fault! And probably illegal for them to insist upon! But switching from fixed billing date to a recurring monthly charge will PROBABLY be a lateral move at worst (I'll just need to buckle down and figure out how to do the rewards when it's different for everyone...)

No I'm making this notice to tell you: do not use the iOS app to subscribe. Apple will take a 30% cut, which is outrageous and also I am not absorbing that. We have the option to absorb the fee but why would I do that? No, just sub on any other device. Apple does not deserve your money.

EDIT: Oh also, if you're CURRENTLY subbed on iOS, they will not be taking the additional fee until you unsub/resub... I think. I don't expect them to hold to that forever, but for now you don't need to make any changes.

Comments

Right, the only way a move becomes feasible is when the benefits outweigh any of the downsides. Apple being greedy isn't a dealbreaker, so long as no more bad changes continue to happen (Which considering Patreons decisions lately, is not something to count on.) I think it's important to sit down for a minute and ask yourself what you're willing to put up with, and putting your foot down when they cross that line.

I can't say how Safari works, but they said that the fee only applies to the iOS app. If Patreon on Safari redirects you to the app, then it'd charge the fee there. (Otherwise just like... sub on Firefox) The fee only hits in November so if you change tiers on the iOS app after then, they'd be 30% higher for you and I don't get any of that extra

Rick Griffin

Doesn't the app store have a strict no-porn policy? Is Patreon going to have to ban NSFW?

Arvetis

Alright.

Jonathan

Seems like Apple is trying to extract as much money as they can for legal fees now that they’re involved in an antitrust lawsuit with the federal government 🫢🫢🫢

Marrow Buster

Move? No. I rely on this income and I can't expect everyone to follow. I have been pondering opening up a subscribestar on the side though, with the caveat that I can't split my attention too much between both sites.

Rick Griffin

I subscribe via the website, but maybe it's time to move to SubscribeStar?

Leo G.

Even better: go open your browser, go to Patreon, Find Rick and subscribe that way. Never use the app, because Apple and Google both take their cut.

Blackspots

Two things I wonder: if I subscribe on the Safari browser on my Mac, what does Apple do? And second, what happens if I go down/up tier levels on the Patreon app on iOS?

FarmWolf

One more reason I'm trying to leave their iOS ecosystem.

Andrew Flores

I think it only applies to the iOS store itself--the notice only mentions the iOS app

Rick Griffin

They are over priced scam artists

scrapsthehyena

Well, damn. Pretty shitty move, Apple. I don't use the Patreon app, but I'm betting this new thing means that if you subscribe via Safari on an Apple device (Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc), that the fee will apply. Sounds like it is best to use a PC for any Patreon changes.

Courtney Rayle

I'm an engineer, I should build something. Like a coop subscription platform.

Strawberry Puptart

I spend over $300 a month on Patreon, yet Patreon cares more about the demands of 3rd parties. They don't value creators, they don't value Patreons, but every random interest gets to change the rules.

Strawberry Puptart

No apple here.

Edward Brady

oooh

hiddenstranger

Oh right that was a thing

Rick Griffin

If you already subbed on ios you're fine, but if you have to pause and come back make sure you use browser or android.

PC sub for the win
