patreon

You've probably already heard about Patreon's awful rate changes

Which is why I absolutely understand if you don't want to keep pledging at low amounts anymore.

In fact, this is why I'm starting a Ko-fi page for people who don't want to be charged what amounts to a 65% overhead fee for $1 pledges. Ko-fi's minimum is $3 but you are by no means required to donate monthly, or at all; I will also be posting early access posts on Ko-fi alongside patreon stuff.

At least now the rate changes won't be going through. Looks like Patreon paid attention to the backlash. https://blog.patreon.com/not-rolling-out-fees-change/

I'm still staying on Patreon for as long as there are people here to give support but this sort of thing is making me heavily consider getting on other competitive models at the same time

For those of us that don't want to move to yet another site to just follow along for the time being, will you still be updating things on Patreon, or would we still need to switch over to Ko-Fi if we want to follow you period?

Terri Mouse

I'm glad you posted as I didn't understand about the 35 cents extra charge. It's not going to stop me from continuing to support you though.

Thank you for being honest, upfront, and transparent. Also, thank you for providing an alternative. For all the creators I follow here, you're the first to suggest a legit alternative. I will be remaining on Patreon for now. Also, I blame the repeal of Net Neutrality for this. (I mean, look at when this came about and how fast it seems to be thrown together. Seems like a scramble to me.)

My views on the new Patreon fee structure: http://www.glasswings.com.au/blog/2017-12/08-060320.html I will not be using the "charge up front" option as presently implemented, and I suggest that other patrons also boycott this feature.

While $1-$5 for one artist is a tiny amount... The overhead for $1-$5 for 100 artists is a massive additional fee, and even 10 artists can hurt a budget.

Sartharina/Scow2

If someone can't afford $1.35 they never should have been giving $1. And if they're so fickle that 3% makes their heads go explody... well, you get the idea. People DO know that Patreon isn't profitable, right? And that it's not a charity, right?

Caerdwyn

Also is it really bad enough that using Patreon might be a bad idea?

Daragoth

I have not heard about this change, but from the comments I am reading above it's pretty damn awesome. Can anyone please link the article that talks about this? Thanks!

Daragoth

Yup...I'm gonna have to be donating to people's other pages and drop this, too much overhead to give people some change every month....

Matthew Goebel (skunkboy)

Isn't the overhead around $16 a month? Definitely annoying and lame, but hardly insane... But yeah, the .35/pledge is BS; .35/month would be perfectly reasonable. Patreon only charges my card once a month, so they shouldn't be charging transaction fees multiple times a month.

Dahan

I've already deleted all my pledges. It's been a pleasure to help you pursue your dreams, and I'm sorry that Patreon had to come between us.

Nicoya

It absolutely ruined my donations... I donate nearly $200 a month to like 30 people... had to cancel them because it's cost me an insane extra overhead amount since it's per-pledge and not per charge. I feel terrible about it because I enjoyed what I got for all my pledges.

Slethis Slither

It sucks about the new policy. I can still pledge here for now, but I might switch over to Ko-fi if it becomes a problem as well.

GameCobra

Yeah I heard and ... *does eye squeeze and sighs*
