This one mostly wraps up the situation left open before the hiatus, but it's very much a gateway to the next few arcs.
More chapters will be written in the coming days, as I plan to catch up with where we should have been by the end of August.

... hate this posting format. Just to finish the thought it would be cool if Mikado could teach Shirou some way of transferring himself to fixed locations within the mirror Fuyuki world like his mansion, a town portal spell as it were.

2018-08-14 02:12:50 +0000 UTCYou did a great job writing, as always. The combat went well, the writing had that sweet Nasu style, and the resolution to the issue was nicely thought out. There was that partial text duplication near the middle, though. I personally think there's exactly enough compensation for Shirou. The salvation of Saeko's life from the danger Mikado put her in, the salvation of Mikado of the desperation and loneliness of losing a love one, the salvation of Tearju's life, and the salvation of the Witch of Dun Scaith whose greatest wish is to die. The million EXP, ?, ?, ?, and ? are just... bonuses. I think Shirou's would first try the more... _indirect_ way first. It would be more feasible and more within Shirou's personality to try to do the option that doesn't involve killing someone (and he isn't foolish enough to try to take out a being that is indistinguishable from a Divine Spirit (technically I don't believe she is one, just something equal to one--a being made unkillable by having reached a stage between human and Divine Spirit by pure virtue of having killed everything she fought) who can't be killed unless there isn't another option). I suppose he might try to take her out to get her Mana Cluster in the HGW, if he hasn't otherwise resolved the quest by then? Hm... other methods of healing... bringing up the above, the use of a Mana Cluster is enough to summon a Servant--that much magic may be enough to overcome the curse (which I assume is that of one of the Gae Bolg alternates?). After the summoning of Artoria, he could implant Avalon in her for a bit if he and Mikado discover it while studying him. Even a curse like Gae Bolg wouldn't last under the powers of Avalon (once it is empowered by the presence of its true owner, at least). He could conceivably study medical magecraft to its absolute limits by framing it in the context of swords (healing sword wounds, etc... he might need to get hold of a genuine cursed blade to learn to heal that, though, and I doubt he could do anything much regarding disease). If she gets summoned during the War, he could ask her (or her Master) to do it (or get order her to do it). No--she's still "alive", so I don't think she's recorded in the Throne of Heroes. I don't think the Fuyuki Grail system can handle that, unless Irisviel Mainyu has screwed with it even more than normal. Or he could just try to find and persuade Scathach to remove the curse... as an immortal talented in pretty much everything, she probably could. She might do it, too... or offer to train him, instead. With the Gamer ability he is one of the only beings in existence who might be able to learn to kill her, and with her Wisdom of the Haunted Ground Skill's ability to teach Servant Skills those she recognizes as "heroes", stacked with Shirou's Gamer abilities (... can you go PAST rank 100 Master-level in a skill?)... But that might be TOO broken. ... or he could just fuck her into doing it. Although getting his cooking up to 100 and cooking her a full-course dinner might genuinely be more orgasmic. Seriously, though, what did they DO? Scathach doesn't just randomly murder people, and even most magi aren't stupid enough to piss off an unkillable runic warrior-queen of a phantasmal realm of the dead. I'd be interested in seeing what change in relationship status came from this (and what his relationship position with Mikado is at all, considering that she completely placed her life and loyalty in his hands). And of course, seeing how many levels he got. I mean, a handful of ~60 lv normal Samurai Wraiths were enough for a level. A dozen 85 level Superior Samurai Wraiths? He was already at 33 (at least) before they showed up, so he's got to be a pretty respectable level by now. Maybe high enough to even see the levels of some of the characters who up to this point have only shown question marks? Also, you didn't mention the Exp gain from killing the Superior Samurai Wraiths. You normally do after each kill or knock-out, so I thought I should bring it up. Mikado working with Shirou could be a giant boon for him. With her sworn to not work against him, she could actually be trusted with his secrets of how his Mystic Eyes work. As a proper magus who knows how to do proper research and experimentation, a focus on medical/organic magics, with more life experience (especially with the Moonlit World), she'd be in a prime position to help him discover the full extent of his abilities and help him discover new ways to exploit them. Or at the very least, help him focus his studies. Maybe even come up with a way to raise his damn Wisdom score apart from just sinking points into it. If he wants the equivalent of the Balanced Body (I) from last chapter, he'll need to get up to 50 in Wisdom to go along with Intelligence and/or Charisma. So, this chapter is important to the arcs that are coming up? Arcs, plural? Just how many are left before we get to the Holy Grail War? The Scathach one doesn't seem like one that can be quickly resolved, so I'm guessing that will be a greater arc running concurrently with others. There's the introduction to school, which has a good handful of characters that would need introductions of some depth, lasting a few more chapters... the completion of the romance of Yoruichi... possibly starting one with Tohsaka (although that might wait for the War. It'd be sad if that relationship had to wait so long... but it looks like meeting Sakura might take even longer. Unless the "high bar" incident happened while Kiritsugu was still alive? I don't remember if an age was ever given for that)... further training in the Mirror World (hopefully not taking up too much space with so much interesting stuff coming)... the upcoming conflict with the el-Melloi... whatever Morrigan and Lilith want from him... Hm. That IS quite of lot of stuff to be done. How much does Zouken keep track of what happens in the Soul Society? He's paranoid and intelligent and can easily spy anywhere in the city, so I have a hard time imagining he has no awareness of a superpowered Emiya boy (especially one in contact with the Second Owner) wandering around town, even without Sakura coming in contact with him. Patreon is an absolutely TERRIBLE format to leave in-depth reviews or speculation.

My only major complaint is that I think there was a text-duplication partway through, and that's the kinda thing that could be easily spotted and cleaned up in post. Nice to get such a meaty chunk of story and action after the wait is over. Thanks!
