Do not look at the second slide if you are disturbed by rain worms! The first one is my God Emperor of Dune and the rest are references.
I think I have achieved a version of the rain worm texture I like!
In the book his segments are described as silvery and there is an old cover for one of the previous books with a super segmented shiny silvery worm which is different from how Shi-Hulud is portrayed usually. Of course, it makes sense for the original Maker to be sandy but our guy spends a lot of time indoors. And I like the idea of the giant monster being an actual rain worm!
My initial sketch had elements of that very popular modern illustration with Cronenberg-esque human protuberance Leto II but there were (again) some older depictions that were less cool in modern sense but really cool in that retro-could-be-funny-but-we-have-so-much-edgy-stuff-now-that-this-is-refreshing to me personally (on that note, I recommend Shin Ultraman movie).
Also I liked those drawings there he had tiny arms. I love his audio book smug voice and when imagining him, Moneo and Malky talking I couldn't unsee the God Emperor with small arms. I think it adds comedy and creepiness at the same time and there is abundance of both in the book.
