It's grown in popularity over the years but isn't quite as well known outside of japan as like naruto or AoT, demon slayer, etc. It is huge over in japan though. And yes it is my favorite anime! Naruto I hold dear to my heart as well though 😊 Speaking of demon slayer I hear its mangaka says Gintama is also her favorite, and noted it as one of her main inspirations Gintama is primarily a comedy series with an overarching plot. I'd say that getting to know the many characters is part of what enhances the jokes and the show overall, but I think it is also a series that continues to get better and better as it goes! There is good plot and character progression too it's just told differently than most shonen anime. Of course it's comedy so some jokes might not land for everyone but I'd say it starts off pretty good and then keeps improving. It's a lot of fun and makes references to japanese culture and other anime quite often too (including Naruto). Sorachi, the author, is very skilled at writing comedy alongside tragedy or otherwise serious or impactful moments so that's what made me think of it 😂 I think you would like it. The main character Gintoki is one of my favorite mcs ever and he's hot lol

And believe it or not it is still getting better from now on. You still far away from my favorite moment in the whole show.
