This is something I've realized. Note that many comedians have physical features that set them apart from others--facial characteristics, size, skin color, etc. --which leads to others making fun of them. I, for example, was a skinny kid and often got made fun of because of that. I developed a strong sense of humor as a defense mechanism.
Of course, these aren't the only sources of mental trauma that might lead to one developing a sense of humor to survive.
