Sexy Steampunk Babes: Chapter Forty Four

“The Drake,” Griffith said to her tired audience of Marine-Knight cadets, her voice echoing off the walls of the massive hangar they’d just entered. “Considered old, but far from outdated, the Drake is the workhorse design of the Royal Navy and the craft most of you will fly should you be fortunate enough to be chosen as designated pilots for your future postings.”

It said a lot about the almost mystical reputation of shards that, despite the fact that many of the cadets present were still covered in sweat and heaving from their recent run, they nonetheless perked up to gaze around the room eagerly at the many shards on display, including the one Griffith had just stopped in front of. For his part, William was too busy trying not to hack up a lung to pay much care about any of the planes on offer. When it came to Drakes and Unicorns, as far as he was concerned, once you’d seen one example of each design, you’d seen them all.

Though he didn’t miss the way some of the noble-born members of House Royal scoffed – quietly – at their Instructor’s words. Nor was it hard to understand why as William straightened up to look at the nearest machine.

His gaze sliding up over the four guns mounted in the nose, he took a moment to admire the gleaming aluminum frame before focusing on the craft’s ‘birdcage’ canopy, which served to partially obscure the rear-mounted propeller beyond. Between those features, the fore-mounted stabilizers and the wings sat to the back of the craft, the Drake was as typical an example of a shard as one could find.

Which was precisely the problem. In a world dominated by bespoke machines and limited production runs, the Drake was a standardized design intended to be easily maintained, repaired and replaced. Which, relative to the competition, also made it cheap.

Which, as far as the aristocracy was concerned, meant it was bad. A fact reinforced in their minds by the fact that, more often than not and given that it was the Royal Navy’s Shard of choice, the knights piloting said machines were of common birth.

For a noble house to choose the Drake as their own Shard of choice was to tacitly admit in the eyes of the aristocracy that they couldn’t afford better.

“An aluminum frame. Four repeater cannons. Three ballasts. Storage space sufficient to load one thousand two hundred rounds of ammunition,” Griffith continued, voice smooth and commanding, somehow utterly untroubled by the fact that she’d been leading the morning’s PT. “And all of it irrelevant if the pilot doesn’t know what she’s doing.”

Glancing up, William could see that the other members of his team were now listening with rapt attention, even as their exercise clothes stuck to their sweaty forms. Resisting the urge to sigh, he made sure to straighten up too, for fear of being called out for not paying attention.

If nothing else, the past two weeks back at the academy had shown him beyond a shadow of a doubt that his position as their instructor’s secret booty call garnered him no kind of preferential treatment. Not that he’d have been in any position to act in that role if it were requested. The mind might have been willing but the body was spongy and weak.

“To that end, class, I ask you this: what is the most important factor in an aerial battle between shards?”  The veritable succubus cum terminator continued, unwilling to wait for a response before pointing at a random girl who was pretty much immediately wrong footed.

Which was hardly unexpected. Yes, they’d spent the last two weeks on theory, but none of it had actually related to combat. The poor girl would have been better prepared if the question had been on how to effectively fill out a maintenance request or correctly file a flight report.

“Armor?” the girl hesitated.

Griffith nodded. “A reasonable guess, but entirely incorrect.”

The girl wilted, but seemed relieved that no punishment was forthcoming as Griffith instead continued on with her speech.

“Since the first magical contract positioned the mage as the queen of the battlefield, the defensive capability of combatants has consistently been outpaced by that of their offense. Certainly, some breakthroughs like that of Kraken scale armor championed by Houses like New Haven have made to shorten the gap between the shield and the spear, but that is all they’ve achieved. A shortening. And rarely for long.”

The woman’s hand came down to the side-arm at her hip. “As evidenced by the invention of the bolt-bow as a direct counter to anti-magic. A weapon which, as I’m sure you all well know by now, is perfectly capable of piercing anything short of plate armour at under a hundred meters. And at ranges far beyond that with the newly developed Spell-Bolt.”

More than a few eyes made to turn in his direction at the dark elf’s words, but they didn’t linger long as Griffith roared. “Eyes front!”

Every head present snapped back to the front with enough force to give the owners whiplash as their instructor continued.

“This universal truth of offense being more potent than defense is even more true for shards. Backed up by the power of a mithril-core, the larger caliber weapons sported by shards possess significantly higher velocity than a handheld bolt-bow, allowing for both greater range and killing power.” The woman’s hand patted the extruding barrel of one such repeater mounted to the nose of the Drake she was standing in front of. “Make no mistake, whether an aluminum or wood frame, a dedicated burst of repeater fire will shred a shard in very short order. Either through destroying its flight surfaces, its internal aether-piping… or killing the pilot.”

“I’d be tempted to say weapons then, but agility seems the correct answer here, ma’am.” Another black-clad cadet spoke up. “The potency of a weapon relative to a shard’s armor is irrelevant if the weapon can’t hit.”

William resisted the urge to shake his head.

“A not unreasonable answer,” Griffith hummed consideringly. “One corroborated by the design principles of most shard manufacturers. For years we as a nation have quested to make craft lighter and more agile. Better able to out-turn foes and get on their tail by cutting inside their own turn circle. Better able to dodge incoming fire while strafing Airships and castle walls. Still, even with the lightest craft in the world, that agility isn’t born from nothing. There’s yet another factor that facilitates agility.”

“Speed.” Said another girl whose name William didn’t know. “It doesn’t matter how tightly a shard a shard can turn, if it’s going slow enough then it’s a sitting duck.”

Griffith raised an eyebrow, prompting the girl to continue.

“I mean, that’s what my aunt says. She says that’s why orc wyverns need numbers to stand a chance against shards despite being so much more maneuverable. Because while they can change direction with a flap of their wings, it doesn’t much matter because all shards have to do is fire a burst from beyond the range of their breath. Then they just peel away and the wyverns can’t catch them.”

“Would I be correct in assuming your aunt is a navy woman?”

The cadet nodded and Griffith smiled. “Well, I will say that is a most insightful answer, but one that is only partially correct for it fails to account for another facet of a three-dimensional combat environment.”

“Altitude ma’am.” William said finally.

“Yes!” Griffith said, whirling to face him – and to her credit, her eyes only widened a little as she realized it was him that had spoken. “Explain.”

He took a breath. “In aerial combat terms, altitude and speed are both subsets of the same base function: Energy. Altitude being potential energy and speed kinetic. For a shard, kinetic energy is expended with every turn, climb, roll and twist. Each time one of these maneuvers is performed, a shard loses kinetic energy and thus speed. A shard that loses too much risks either stalling, or in a combat environment, falling prey to other attacking craft as it languishes lethargically in the air.”

He idly noted some of the other high born starting to nod along. “Fortunately, while kinetic energy is a fairly limited resource, there also exists potential energy in the form of altitude. By throwing a shard into a dive, a pilot is able to convert potential energy into kinetic energy. The same, naturally, is true in reverse. By placing a shard into an incline, a pilot may convert their current kinetic energy into potential energy for later.”

And then some. Naturally, with the aid of gravity a plane descending could move faster than when it was flying level.

To that end, he idly had to wonder just how many shards have fallen victim to Wyverns attacking from above while engaging in low level passes through the mountains?

“Though at the risk of leaving themselves vulnerable in the process,” Griffith finished for him. “Hence why the first action of a shard launched from an airfield will be to climb as high as possible before the enemy reaches them. And likewise why an airship will always try to reach its maximum altitude before launching craft.”

She tapped the nearby Drake again. “A shard in possession of a higher energy state than its foe has the power to dictate the engagement. Should the foe attempt to flee, they have the power to catch them. Should a foe engage them, they have the power to escape them. Speed and altitude are what allow a pilot to choose when and where to engage a foe who lacks either. A pilot that lacks either and thus languishes on the deck has no option but to die.”

Well, that wasn’t strictly true, William thought.

While a higher energy state was valuable in the opening moments of an engagement, a pilot at a lower energy state did actually have a few options in how to respond. The most obvious of which being to kill speed and force an overshoot, thereby allowing the defending pilot to blast the attacker into oblivion from their now reversed positions.

Again, he had to wonder how many shards had fallen prey to that maneuver the moment a drake opened up its wings like parachutes, forcing the fixed-wing craft to overshoot.

He shook his head, he had a feeling all that would come up later. For now though, it seemed Griffith was just trying to emphasize the age-old adage.

‘Speed is life. And that means altitude.’

As lessons went, it was a good one.

“If you learn nothing else over the course of this semester,” the woman continued. “Know this: An aerial battle is slow. It’s not a battle of twitch reflexes and hand-eye coordination. It’s a battle of positioning and decision making. Of understanding the capability of your shard and that of your enemy, your relative levels of both kinetic and potential energy, the current state of the battlespace and other shards in it. It’s about deciding on a course of action that provides you the maximum advantage while diminishing that of your enemy. Can you out turn them? Can you outpace them? Can you outclimb them?”

Everyone was listening raptly as the woman slapped the Drake for a third time. “Which leads us back to the Drake and the unfortunate reality that every foe you come across will be well aware of your specs - while you may not yet know the abilities of whatever monstrosity they’ve just pulled out of their family workshop.”

She grinned, all teeth. “Fortunately, being aware of the Drake’s strengths does nothing to nullify their existence. To that end, while the Drake is certainly less agile than more recent designs, with a wider turning circle, the added weight of the design means that in a dive…”

William listened as intently as any other person.

This was why he was here after all.

To know his enemy.

-----------------

“Why are you looking to set up a meeting with the Whitemorrow and Plumgarden heirs?”

William paused midstep. Turning slowly, he cocked his head towards his teammate as he idly shifted the basket full of laundry he was holding. “Marline? I thought you were heading out to the baskets?”

That was where most of the year was headed despite this technically being a free period. Accessible only to second years, the baskets were a series of shard cockpits that had quite literally been ripped from old or trashed shards. Rather than being repurposed for new machines though, they’d been converted into what were basically budget simulators. Albeit, simulators that literally only simulated a control interface to practice with. With that said, the many buttons, levers, switches and pedals were useful for cadets hoping to practice their take off and landing checklists.

Which for the moment, was just about the entire population of House Royal and a few members of other houses as well, given that the Trainee certification tests were at the end of week three – and failing them would mean that the cadet in question wouldn’t be allowed to fly the following week when practical flight training began on the Academy’s unicorns.

“I will, but I have a question first,” the dark elf said. “It’s been niggling at me. It’s out of character for you. And that’s usually dangerous.”

“How’d you even find out I was trying to set up a meeting?” he asked.

“You asked Bonnlyn. She’s not subtle.”

He considered that for a moment, before he shrugged. “They’re twins. I’m a satyr. What more need be said?”

“You ignored them last year.” the elf said.

He shrugged. “I was busy. Impending nuptials put a bit of a damper on the old libido.”

“I’m sure,” she deadpanned. “And the Plumgarden girl?”

He thought for a second before grinning. “Well, they’re rivals. I figure if I go to her after the twins… Well, a little competition only makes a girl try that much harder…”

The elf stared. “You know, a year ago I might have bought that. More to the point, I don’t think I’d have cared that you’re obviously lying. Unfortunately for both of us, I know you better now William. You don’t do anything for shits and giggles.”

He grinned. “Did you actually just say ‘shits and giggles’? Void help me, I think my vocabulary is rubbing off on you.”

The girl sighed in what was likely disgust. “William. Please. Why are you trying to set up a meeting?”

“Why do you care?” he asked finally.

“Why wouldn’t I?”

…He didn’t know why that surprised him. But it did. A lot.

“I’m… looking to support one of them for the Summerfield claim,” he said finally. “Maybe… marry one so I could intervene legally when it all pops off?”

The dark elf eyes widened before leaning in close to whisper, glancing around for hidden listeners. “Has… has your family not given up on your sister’s claims? Will the Blackstones be helping them, only using her rather than you to make it legal?”

He shrugged. “Something like that.”

“Fuck,” the girl hissed before eyeing him. “And your plan is to… what? Pit two counties against a dukedom and another county and assume you’ll come out on top? Two airships against the entire Blackstone fleet?”

William smirked. “It wouldn’t be the entire ducal fleet. They’d need to keep some in the North to maintain appearances. I figure it’ll be a third of a ducal fleet. Plus, I figure we could team up with the claimant I don’t pick – you know, before turning on them once the Blackstones and my family are dealt with.”

He could do it. It’d be tight, but the Jellyfish would be retrofitted in two years and his small fighter fleet would also be more or less ready. Between that and a few other tricks he could think up, he wagered better than even odds he could come out on top.

Theoretically, it was less risky than his fight against Tala and her team last year.

…Though one wouldn’t know that given the strangled look his teammate was giving him.

“Ok,” she said after a moment of visibly collecting herself. “Assuming that somehow you could actually take on a third of the fleet that’s currently a match for the Royal Navy - what if Blackstones decide to err on the side of caution and send more than a third? A half? Two thirds?

“They need to-” he started to say before he was cut off.

“They’re trying to overthrow the monarchy!” Marline hissed. “And taking the Summerfield duchy would be the second to final move. Do you think they might be willing to risk overtipping their hand a bit if they thought there was even a slight possibility of you affecting the outcome at that point?”

He… maybe? But…

“What other options do I have?” he asked finally. “The other option is letting the Queen kill my sister.”

And that wasn’t going to happen. Ever.

Marline gripped him, leaning in closer to ensure her words were quiet. “Really? You have no other option? Have you considered telling your mother what you just told me? That the Queen’s well aware of her conspiracy and she’s going to lose a daughter long before it comes to fruition if she doesn’t back off?”

He shook his head. “She’d just send Olvia up North. Have the Blackstones foster her until the marriage.”

And the Blackstone clearly had some means of keeping the Crown’s invisible assassins at bay. Likely better than he could.

“And you know that for a fact? Really?”

He shrugged. “They’ve managed to disappoint me every other time I’ve given them an out.”

“Ok,” Marline said, eerily calm now. “Assuming your mother does exactly what you’re worried about… is that a problem? For you, not Lindholm. After all, your sister’s now safe and Queen suddenly has less leverage over you.

He… supposed…

“Then I’d have no way to stop the Summerfield coup?”

“Except for falling back on the same plan you’re currently trying to go through with – supporting another claimant and beating a ‘third’ of the Blackstone fleet in open combat with just two counties. Somehow.”

He considered it.

“William,” the girl continued, eying him seriously. “Do you ever think that you might be looking for a fight? It’s like you go out of your way to pick the most batshit options available to you.”

He scoffed only to see that she wasn’t smiling.

“William… Are you Harrowed?” she asked finally.

He all but jumped back. “Why in the hells would you think that?”

“Aside from that queer turn of phrase you just used?” she said softly. “There’s the fact that you keep inventing shit. Now, one or two innovations I could understand. But you just keep pulling more and more absurd ideas out of your ass.”

It was actually a little strange to hear the normally taciturn dark elf speaking so coarsely.

“Do I seem insane to you?” he asked, grinning.

Rather than joke back, the girl continued staring. “No, you don’t. At least, not at first.”

His smile turned decidedly plastic. “At first?”

The dark elf shook her head. “At every opportunity, it seems you pick the hardest option. The riskiest choice. The one that endangers you and whoever happens to be in your path.” She ran a hand through her white hair. “I mean, I know we joke about you being a drama prince… but that joke got me thinking. It’s almost like you seek out conflict. Sure, you couch it in jokes, dramatic gestures and hard choices… but sometimes it almost seems like you’re blind to the alternatives.”

George twitched.

That wasn’t true.

He was fine.

Those were the best choices.

The most efficient ones.

Stealing the Shard. Getting kicked out of his House. Banished to the academy. Challenging Tala. Killing Al’Hundra. Developing the Bolt-Bow. Beating Tala. Blackmailing the Queen. Calling out Stillwater.

And now this new plan… it was… what he needed to do.

“Harrowing,” his teammate – the kid! – was speaking softly now. “I’ll admit, I only know as much about it as the next person, which is why I know what the signs are. People like that, they can’t forget the things they learn. Ever. It’s always on their mind. Even those that don’t go mad immediately, the more lucid ones… makes them… static. Unable to change. And those ideas, those memories, they want to be used.”

She paused. “Truthfully, if you are Harrowed, you’re the most stable example I’ve ever heard of… but if you are, I’d bet your mind’s full of… weapons or something. Because the way you’re acting, it’s like you’re seeking out an opportunity to make use of them.

 That was…

That was…

In the silence that followed, she spoke again. “Do you trust me, William?”

No.

The thought was instant. An instinctive reaction. She was just a kid after all. He could use her. Manipulate her. Tie her to his cause. But trust?

He couldn’t trust her.

Nor anyone else.

Not on this world.

It was him alone.

…And he didn’t know why those thoughts surprised him. But they did.

“I thought not,” she hummed, a sad smile on her lips. “It’s alright. I get it. I’m the same. Once you get used to keeping secrets, it’s a hard habit to break.”

“Y-” He coughed, his throat strangely dry. “You do?”

She smiled softly, some genuine mirth in her tone. “Ah, I’d say that’s another mark against you really being a ‘genius’ if you haven’t figured it out by now. With that said, this isn’t about me.” She paused. “With that said, if it makes you rethink this latest bit of insanity, I’ll tell you. Happily.”

Her hand came down to grip his – the sensation surprisingly warm against the… cold clamminess of his skin. “What else can I do?”

The girl’s smile brightened. “Oh, want to know my secret that badly?”

He shook his head. “No. No, you don’t need to tell me anything. I… want to trust you.”

He did.

He didn’t.

The grip on his hand got tighter. Not painfully. Reassuringly.

He wanted to shake it off. He didn’t need this. He was a grown ass man.

It felt nice. Comforting.

He hated it.

“Then please…” she said slowly. “Just speak to your family first? At least try to talk to them before you throw yourself into the fires of a conflict that we might have a chance to avoid. If they refuse, I promise I’ll be right beside you when we board that first Blackstone cruiser.”

He hesitated.

He didn’t know why.

After all, she was right. If they turned him down, he’d just continue with his plan. Nothing changed.

Because they would turn him down.

He was sure of it.

Wasn’t he?

“Ok,” William said finally, ignoring the sickly sensation of something twisting in his guts. “I can do that.”

Comments

Bonnlyn wants to complete her four year academy training because she would end up as a noble as a direct result, giving her family the "in" with the noble markets. Which is good business for them.

Lurkemancer

I came to much the same conclusion myself. And the reason for the pretense is fairly simple - If you recall how Evan (the Blackstone bootlicker from the first book) was treated - Every ounce of protection to make sure he doesn't see any action, because letting a man on your team be on the frontlines. If Marline had come around to the Academy as a guy, even if he was the best damn candidate for the saboteour position in recorded history, he'd still likely end up relegated to being a static guard around the core for AFTER the whole team was wiped out. And his family is in no position to afford even a single member not trying to claw their way back to having a core again.

Lurkemancer

After reading your other comments check for tannin intolerance. You might as well get checked for Coeliac, though that's unlikely it's worth getting checked.

Isak Mark

The more I'm thinking of this the more I'm thinking that Endgame is going to result in William's sister leading the attack William needs to defend against.

so next chapter only by next sunday?

Floplays

Thanks for keep us informed and I hope you are better soon.

Trevayne

I found the map as posted back in January. The Lindholm duchies per Bluefishcake are as follows: Summerfield Blackstone Southshore Royal New Haven Apparently, the crownlands held by the Royal family are also a duchy. The sides are Traditionalist Blackstone New Haven Crown loyalists Royal Summerfield Southshore That suggests Olzenya and Marline are probably in Southshore.

Trevayne

Thank you. I found it.

Trevayne

Sorry all, part of the reason I hedged my bets on Friday was because I was feeling pretty under the weather then and I was a little worried that'd only get worse. It has. I'd like to think I can still get this chapter out on Sunday, but given I've been up all night at this point making dashes to the lav, it's looking unlikely.

Blue Fishcake

A map was posted back in january. Its worth noting that the lands controlled directly by the crown are considered their own "duchy".

Fishminer

Request to the author - On a different note, I know you have posted some nice character artwork for this story. Is there a map of Lindholm and could you please post it if it exists? Right now we know there are 5 duchies, 3 in the South and 2 in the North. We know the North has mountains and forests where the Orcs struggle against the Northern Duchies. The impression is something like Britain, with the Orcs in the Scottish highlands, the Northern Duchies are in York, Northumbria, and the Scottish lowlands, and the South is everything south of that. Is that about right?

Trevayne

Thinking about Marline's situation brought up another question. The whole of Team 7 is in the Royal House. We know William's mother bought out his contract so he is not obligated to serve in the RN, but what about the rest of them? Do they all have an RN service obligation and have to serve in the RN after graduation? At a guess Verity certainly does and Marline probably does. Verity's family were slaves and she is attending on effectively a merit scholarship. There is no way they have the money. Marline is probably serving, because that was supposed to be her way of getting an opportunity to board an enemy ship and steal their core so her family would have one again. Also, even if her family wanted to buy her contract, all of their money was going to keep their ship intact and maintained. The two question marks are Bonnlyn and Olzenya. The former is from a merchant family that definitely has the money to buy out her contract, but might not because they see Bonnlyn as an entry point into the nobility and that presumably requires not just entry into the academy, but also service in the RN. Olzenya comes from House Sumond, so as a noble they should be able to buy out her contract. They might not because she has at least six sisters and this is probably an acceptable occupation for a noble. Just how she got into the Royal House at the academy isn't that clear. I suspect one of her sisters capitalized on a situation where she had ticked off her mother by making a well-timed suggestion about sending Olzenya to Blickland.

Trevayne

Ping!

Isak Mark

I think the Crownlands are, as implied by the name, separate from any of the 5 duchies & effectively a separate region onto itself with all of the houses of the region (regardless of size) being direct vassals to the crown itself.

Jacob

I was rereading and found confirmation that both Olzenya and Marline are from Crownland houses, so they must be from Southern Duchies, but we don't know which ones. At a guess, it isn't Summerfield or they might also have claims on ther duchy. Here is the quote from chapter 22: “The same for me and mine,” Marline said. Beyond them, Olzenya hesitated a second before nodding. “Mine too.” Despite himself, William actually felt a little touched at the gesture. Not least of all because, in doing so, his friends were risking the ire of a very powerful house. Admittedly, both the elves were from Crownlander houses, so they already were enemies in a way, but there was a world of difference between being someone’s nebulous political foe and directly drawing their ire.

Trevayne

“Then please…” she said slowly. “Just speak to your family first? At least try to talk to them before you throw yourself into the fires of a conflict that we might have a chance to avoid. If they refuse, I promise I’ll be right beside you when we board that first Blackstone cruiser.” He hesitated. He didn’t know why. After all, she was right. If they turned him down, he’d just continue with his plan. Nothing changed. Because they would turn him down. He was sure of it. Wasn’t he? “Ok,” William said finally, ignoring the sickly sensation of something twisting in his guts. “I can do that.” I think this is more evidence that William is having a nervous crisis or near breakdown. I think William's normal response to Marline's offer to board ships would be more like this: "Board a Blackwood cruiser? Why? I don't want to board them, I want to blow them out of the sky!" "If you thought the krakenslayer was impressive, you haven't seen anything yet."

Trevayne

Monday it is.

Blue Fishcake

Thinking some more about Marline, while I am still not convinced that Marline is a man pretending to be a woman, I have thought of a potential reason why. I expect Marline's mother was the head of her House and was unable to have more children when "Martin" was born. As a male heir, lots of families would be looking for a marriage. Unfortunately, around this time her aunts were killed by the saboteur who stole the family's mithril core. "Martin" training as a saboteur candidate was the best option the family had to try to get their core back. As it is, they have been slowly sinking as they try to keep their airship hull safe and maintained. The problem is how they arrange for extensive martial training for a man. Men aren't supposed to do that. Even William, with his eclectic self-guided education, didn't learn how to use a sword before he got to the academy. Marline, on the other hand, has clearly received a lot of combat-related training since childhood. This suggests that "Martin" may have grown up being treated as a girl. It may be that it has even been hidden from their servants and only the mother, the father, and their surviving sister-wives know the secret. I realize this is pretty melodramatic, but given that the normal reasons for concealing one's sex don't apply (men are allowed to join the RN), something unusual has to be going on.

Trevayne

Good question. For that matter, do we even know all of the Duchies? We know of the two Northern ones, Blackstone and New Haven. We know there are three Southern Duchies, but the only name I remember is Summerfield because it is the one at the center of the intrigue. At a guess, I think Marline's House Greygrass is probably under one of the other two Southern Duchies because I don't think her house has been mentioned as having anything to do with Summerfield. Also, if she was from a Northern House I think William would have been suspicious and it would have come up. Thinking about it, I wonder if there are any Northern House cadets in the Royal Student group or since the Northern Houses are more martial all of theirs are in teams in the Noble House grouping?

Trevayne

It's all good! Just ribbin ya in a good natured fashion!

The Fire Piper

Thanks, I think 🙂. What can I say, this is a great story that provides lots of food for thought. That means I have lots of questions.

"Even those that don’t go mad immediately, the more lucid ones… makes them… static. Unable to change. And those ideas, those memories, they want to be used.” My guess is that the moment William really goes off the rails from his teammates perspective is when he tries building a Fatman Nuke for dubious reasons.

Actually, big question. Which Ducal house is Marlines family attached to?

It's time for the Thursday hype train! It's gonna be Sunday. Might as well just lose hope for anything else and accept the inevitable. Ignore the slivers of hope that Bluefish might provide. This way if a miracle happens, you can be pleasantly suprised! Otherwise, what is in store for this next exciting chapter?!?!? Will William tell his mother that his favorite sister is in the Queen's gunsights? If he does will the Queen find out? Will Marline share about that piece of ebony wood they keep in their pocket? Will the Corsair be finished soon? What about that new engine? Will he bring WWII air tactics like the Thatch weave to his new world, or keep them in reserve for when it's really needed? Will any of Williams teammates get noticed by the rare boys around campus for their prowess or do they just want to play around with team seven's music boxes? Is William the only one going get all the action? No matter what happens, we know Trevayne will share at least 30 posts about it! So tune in my friends for the next chapter of SEXY STEAMPUNK BABES!

possible. still its associated with an active bear. being eggs could also symbolize stuff like change or whatnot. in the end we could make up whatever nonsense we wanted. as long as any of it is vaguely possible its probably fine.

Thinking some more about the conversation with Marline, I am almost surprised she didn't offer to take a geas to keep his secrets if William would just talk to her. I think it is pretty obvious to her that he needs to talk to someone. The problem is he has been keeping his own counsel for over a decade and he doesn't trust very well. Offering a geas would allow him to believe that she really would keep his secrets if he told them to her. She is already geas bound regarding the krakenslayer, so adding one more would not be as big a deal as accepting one without already having one. Edit: Geas question - Do geases warn their holders that they are about to screw up before it happens, or can a geas holder make a mistake and lose their magic? For example, I can imagine a geased individual breaking under torture, revealing the secret or violating the condition and losing their magic. I hope they get some warning before making a completely accidental and inadvertent disclose that suddenly costs them their magic.

Trevayne

Those were the best choices. The most efficient ones. Stealing the Shard. Getting kicked out of his House. Banished to the academy. Challenging Tala. Killing Al’Hundra. Developing the Bolt-Bow. Beating Tala. Blackmailing the Queen. Calling out Stillwater. I really think William is beginning to have a nervous breakdown here, because he knows very well these were not always the best options available. For example, I think he stole the shard in chapter one because two peasants would have died otherwise. It fit in with his campaign of "familial terrorism", but he did it because he wanted to save those two peasants and his family had refused to try. He was trying to pressure his mother into sending him to the academy and not just marry him off. He recognized that he probably overdid it when his mother sent him in the general intake group and not as a noble, although she did buy out his contract so he would only have the four years of the academy and not those 4 years plus several more years of active duty service in the RN. Getting banished to the academy was part of his plan. The whole sequence of killing Al Hundra and challenging Tala was due to Tala's decision to try to move him to a different team in her retinue. Given the power difference (Blackstone had a lot more clout), he really didn't have any other options, unless he was willing to marry Tala. Challenging Stillwater was him being a drama king. He could have simply tried to contact the Queen that evening and asked her to remove Stillwater and the Marines. If she refused, then he could have escalated. His big problem is that he is mentally older (50+ years) than his peers. He has decided that he wants to get rid of slavery, but nobody is willing to take him seriously. He has been keeping his plans to himself for 10-15 years and he is really reluctant to talk about them. We haven't seen it, but I expect there was a point when he was about 5-6 and tried discussing his ideas and was mocked by his family as just being a child. He might have told an aunt something in confidence and she told his mother.

Trevayne

Good point on the gold, but I thought bears gorged on salmon before going into hibernation, not while waking up. Still it is at least plausible.

Trevayne

Third option is that 'marty' is a just a cis-het dude in drag. I'd say the MTF option is both easier to explain (Marline doesn't need a reason to present as female other than wanting to) but also makes less sense for the story, (This is being played up as a very important plot point, but the rest of the story is very much not about LGBT gender identities) If Marline is more manly than is apparent at first glance; my bet is that he is a just a 'he'. No trans MTF, just disguising himself for some reason that blue has yet to explain.

Morpheus

Maybe, but the thought from piper about him looking nostalgic over the corsair definitely implies to me that he flew THAT plane before.

Morpheus

bears eat salmon, a LOT. So its calling the bear out to feed. My best guess on the gold is that as a metal that doesn't tarnish or rust it is 'stable' like the hibernating bear.

Morpheus

No, Marlene's secret is that he is masquerading as a woman.

The Fire Piper

Yes, I think the alchemist has to believe that the combination will be effective. I can understand what Piper was trying to do and why bear components might be useful. IIRC she was trying to create a desensitized version of Earth Blood so that it would be safer to use on airships. She was using the concept of a hibernating bear, so That the bear blood would be asleep and much less likely to buirn. That explains the bear parts. What it doesn't explain is the gold, unless the bear parts are too easy to get and the gold is to supply rarity and conceptual weight? Either way, I have no idea of why fish eggs would remove the stabilization effect unless maybe bears come out of hibernation when the salmon are laying eggs?

Trevayne

No, we don't know that he was a fighter pilot and since he was probably born in 1946 and the Corsair left service in 1959, it is highly unlikely that he flew it on active duty. I am not saying he definitely wasn't an USAF or USN pilot, just that we do not know. The statement in Chapter 1 indicates vague memories of flying aircraft from Earth, but not which kind. He could have been a fighter pilot, an airliner pilot, or a general aviation pilot. I agree that he knows jets, since they were the dominant military aircraft power source after WW2. I agree that he probably could magesmith one, but the metallurgy would be difficult, among other things. I am pretty sure he isn't working on jets because he looked at WW2 fighter engines and bothered to invent an interrupter gear, which is superfluous on most jets because they do not have propellers. As for surface-to-air rockets, the British tried them in WW2 and they were a total failure in that role (granted they did serve as the basis for useful air-to-ground and surface-to-surface rockets). I don't see them doing any better here. They might be able to hit airships, but they are armored, so unless you are using large armor-piercing rockets, hits aren't going to matter. If the airships are operating at altitude, they can see them coming and dodge. Also, Katyusha batteries would be vulnerable to being strafed by shards.

Trevayne

No.

Blue Fishcake

This whole conversation with Marline brings up another question. Why hasn't the Queen or Griffith for the Queen had a similar conversation? The Queen has demonstrated that she is willing to put pressure on William, but what efforts has she made to determine why William wants to help her side? If it is because he opposes slavery, why does he oppose it? She needs to know this to figure out how much pressure she can use and to assess his sanity. She needs to know if he is an idiot savant or a brilliant inventor. Before she puts a lot of trust in him, she has to assess if he is trustworthy. Not asking about his motives and assessing if she can accept them is like not trying to tie him to the Royal family. We have already seen that she was very willing to do that and only called it off because of William's bluff about an insurance policy.

Trevayne

Possible, but if so, why is she acting this way? It is hard to see how one person can change a society without some leverage and she doesn't seem to be trying to invent something to gain an edge.

Trevayne

I wonder if being young actually HELPED his sanity. in the sense that William's brain was far more plastic as a toddler and could kinda grow AROUND the harrow, rather than having a big chuck cut out of it had he harrowed as an adult.

Morpheus

Based on the internal monologue of one of the invisible spies it implied that the alchemist BELIVING that something was super expensive and rare mattered too. Unless I misinterpreted.

Morpheus

Well, rockets at least came well before the ICE. Adding rocket thrusters and weapons to the existing platform shouldn't be hard. Of course, at that point the airship is done because you could have ground-based anti-airship rockets. I would throw an extra $50 into Patreon for an anti-airship horse drawn Katyusha.

Borisoff72

Well, George in his previous life was a fighter pilot. We don't know how long his career was, but we know he flew corsair, or at least a similar design, and is familiar with the airforce's energy- maneuverability theory, which was developed in the 60s, implying he was flying at least that long. This means he knows jets, which the airforce flew in large scale since the 50s. There is a lot of tech that needs to be made for a jet to work, but William has the memories for them, which means he could probably built one by himself with mage-smithing if he has the time, something he doesn't have yet.

Andrew Lechner

Is Marline also a mind from another world embedded in a body not her own? Curious

AH

Alchemy is literally just combining conceptually similar items and figuring out what result you get. The process of experimenting is about as intuitive as you might imagine. The difficult bit is finding less expensive alternatives that still have the effect you're looking for.

Blue Fishcake

Interesting question, does alchemy involve harrowing? The reason I ask is how do alchemists have any idea of what does what in combination with what. For example, How did anyone figure out that mixing scales from a seven-year-old Kraken born under a full moon with reagent Y produces product Z? How the heck do they even figure out if a Kraken is seven years old, much less born under a full moon? Do they have Kraken farms that rear them until they are say 10 years old just so the alchemists can get the reagents and know under which moon a given Kraken was born? My guess is the original breakthroughs that produced alchemy were from harrowing and by now it may represent a safer variation in that an alchemetical question is less likely to drive the one asking insane or wip[e their mind. Another possibility would be a class of specified alchemical divination spells that generate some clues as to the answer of a specific problem. We saw in chapter 41 that Piper developed the Bears Blood version of Earth Blood as a less sensitive incendiary. She actually went through a research process to figure out how to do it, but how did it work? My guess is she has access to a spell form that when given a desired property in the product suggests some potential possibilities. We know she was specifically trying for a less sensitive version of Earth Blood that would be safe to store on ship, but could be made more flammable when loaded into a weapon for use. So she would have asked about how to make it less sensitive until a specific element was added. The answer she got was probably something like fish eggs and then she had to figure out by trial and error just what kind of fish eggs.

Trevayne

At a guess, in around 15-20 years. They don't even have internal combustion engines yet and I don't think aether gas is suited for jet engines. Although, if they really wanted to try it, they could probably take a full-sized mithril core and put it in a shard frame modified for direct aether gas propulsion. A shard might get enough thrust from a core's raw aether gas output to make it work, but it would be utterly impractical, ludicrously expensive, and only really be good for speed record attempts.

Trevayne

I suggested before that he could try it with Marline. She already has a geas with him, so adding another or extending it to cover the secrets he discloses shouldn't be that difficult. Then he can tell her everything and get reactions from her going forward. She can then suggest to the rest of the team that they might also consider joining her in the geas. Any who agree could also be told. William's part of the geas would be not lying to them.

Trevayne

"An aerial battle is slow. It’s not a battle of twitch reflexes and hand-eye coordination." When we gonna do jets and rockets?

Borisoff72

It effects him differently because he's basically is composed of harrowing information.

mike wade

She just accidentally completed a world record speed run essentially. Since she's put her entire existence into the goal of being a badass to steal a core she probably doesn't even know how to kick back and enjoy life. Sure she can actually laugh now but I feel she's still instinctually looking for threats and opportunities.

Vonbaron

Perhaps you create a design contest. You provide a general description and whoever’s closest to your vision, you award them the money that you would spend on the commission. This contest is announced on Royal Roads, Reddit, everywhere where you post your stories. Saves time and you get the cream of the crop of what you want.

Conrad34xdsa

This shows why William may be hesitant to reveal himself as Harrowed, anyone who knows may just dismiss everything but his tech as harrowed madness, kneecapping any of his efforts to get real power.

Hikaraka

I agree that Blackstone is willing to start a civil war. To them the only acceptable orcs are dead or enslaved. They have been fighting them for centuries and really hate them. That said, they would prefer to avoid a bloody civil war. They are trying to create a fait accompli situation so by the time the crown realizes Blackstone and New Haven are moving, the Summerfields have switched sides and the Crown side has already lost. It is New Haven that wants a bloody civil war to weaken both sides so that the Solites can just roll over the survivors. As for Marline's specific proposal, she isn't saying he should do nothing. All she is saying is that he should actually ask his mother to refuse the Blackstone's marriage plans because he thinks it will lead to his sister's assassination. The only real downside is his mother might dislike and/or distrust him even more. Given their current issues, I am not sure much greater distrust is possible. Marline is not saying he shouldn't build weapons or make any other preparations. All she is saying is that he should try talking to his mother before trying to court one of the other Summerfield claimants. Thinking about it, if he can convince is mother that there is a decent chance Blackstone will lose, his mother might even encourage him to court one of the claimants. That might end the push from the Blackstones to continue the plot, without necessarily putting Ashfield on the Blackstone enemies list. Since William is not the Count of Redwater, if he courts one of the claimants and successfully claims the Duchy of Summerfield, Blackwater will probably have other things to do than nurse grudges against Ashfield.

Trevayne

Nah, Blackstone WAS Ready and willing to plunge the country into a bloody civil war. Now thanks to Will they are only willing to start a Civil war. Him doing all this shit of building weapons is NEEDED, it doesn’t matter if he’s “Hollowed” or not Blackstone WILL be starting a civil war and unless he wants to die or live in a country run by slavers he needs to build an army. She definitely knows this and yet acting like he should just do nothing (and leave it to women to do the hard work)

Indexo's Vault

Thinking some more about it, another way to interpret the scene between William and Marline is William is having a bit of a nervous breakdown. He has been under varying amounts of stress since childhood and probably since he woke up in Wiliam's body. Marline is showing him sympathy and understanding and he just doesn't know how to process it. By stress I mean he was a 78 -year old adult who was now in a toddler's body. He is reduced to near helplessness on the one hand and massive boredom because there is next to nothing he can actually do. He even said that he might have gone nuts if he didn't have the problem of figuring out how magic is used to keep his mind occupied. Starting around age eight, he starts his undeclared war on his family. He even describes himself as a sort of familial terrorist due to the pranks and stunts he pulls. At the same time, he is trying to learn as many skills as he can while balancing promises to the servants who he is using as teachers. We have seen in the story just what he had to do to wreck the betrothal to Tala. That was also a lot of stress, because it could easily have gone wrong. An additional source of stress is that there was nobody in his family that he could actually talk to and bounce ideas off of. Even the little sister he loves is a supporter of his main enemy, the Blackstones.

Trevayne

I'd like to believe he will let his entire team in on the secret before the end of book 2. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I hope not.

Business Casual

Looking forward to seeing it. You mentioned in the first chapter that they look like flying Civil War ironclads. The image I have is something like flying CSS Virginia (Merrimac) with another row of gunports on the lower hull (underwater on the original).

Trevayne

I doubt it. There is no real William. The toddler who was William has been erased by the arrival of George, even if he has to use the name Williamn because that is how his family saw him.

Trevayne

What about fan art? Is there somewhere to submit that? I'm not a great artist by any means, but if I can find the descriptions again I'd be willing to try my hand at it.

Business Casual

New plan. People we need fan art. And we need it now! Winner gets to be a beta reader

O

I wonder if you can hollow away the Hallowing, as in he started off as William, hollowed into George and then hollows himself back into William.

stormferret

Err, no. The queen is going to be a Blackstone if their side wins, probably Eleanor. Tala if something happens to Eleanor. If Olivia causes problems she will probably die or at best be locked up. She would have minimal power as the Duchjess of Summerfield. Her only value to the Blackstones is as a pawn that can help them win. Once they have won, she will do exactly what Eleanor Blackstone says or she will be killed. The marriage is only a tool to swing the balance of power towards the Blackstones so they win. After that, they will be in charge and can do what they want, or so they think. The New Havens might disagree, the Summerfields will not.

Trevayne

I did actually commission a bit of artwork of an airship recently - but in the end I found myself dissatisfied with the end result. So, I've started a new commission.

Blue Fishcake

The problem is until William or someone can demonstrate that the Blackstones will lose the civil war, the sane decision for the Ashfields is to keep going with the marriage. If they back out and the Blackstones win anyway they know the Ashfields will be on the enemies list of the new Royal Family. We know that the Blackstones will probably not get there because just as they are winning, they will be stabbed in the back by their "allies" in House New Haven, but nobody else knows that.

Trevayne

The big kicker towards the 'Marline is actually Martin' is that, of all things, that Marline is very aware of why it would be very difficult for Will to talk when he's fallen on his testicles at the end of the match with Team Blackstone. No other girl on the team could puzzle it out at the time.

Dancingrage

OH I like that plot point! The possibility of his harrowing influencing or reinforcing negative practices that are hidden by practical and logical conclusions and plannings! That’s an extremely interesting philosophical character trait. I hope you expand further on it in the future!

Hunter

I think men are subject to a lot of social pressure, but they aren't slaves. I don't think a different house can just buy out a contract. The Ashfields bought out his contract because they didn't want him to be a part of the Royal Navy and they could do that because he was an Ashfield. I don't think any random noble house could just buy out Marline's contract. Edit: Even if they did buy out his contract it does not mean they own him. It just means that he does not have a military service obligation to the Kingdom of Lindholm. That is why his family bought his contract out.

Trevayne

A heiress with a shit ton of pull and will be queen if they pull the coup off. William was chosen to be married because he’s male, thus the power and decision making would go to talia by default. While I have no doubt she will be a puppet for the black-stones, they could fuck their future plan’s over if they piss her off. That pawn is destined to become a queen after all.

mike wade

I want his family to agree to back down from the Blackstone marriage just to show his family is capable of making sane choices. Shame he can't just marry and be a beard for Marline as she is a co-conspirator at this point. As always Blue I can never predict where the story will go, and frankly I enjoy being surprised.

Conrad34xdsa

Big question blue. Will we see some cover art that isn’t a simple Picture of a shard? I brought this up earlier and I’ve been really wanting to see what style you’re going for. I mentioned a picture of William studying some technical designs with him casting a completely different shadow against a map of the world. Sort of a Young Napoleon in the making style for example. Is there something in the works and you’re just keeping it on the down low for a surprise? Great chapter regardless

Conrad34xdsa

You forget that they were unlanded nobility. They only had one generation(Marlines) that could pull it off. After that anyone else born in the next generation would not pass on nobility and get a direct line into the academy. Plus the family would probably run out of money by that point and lose their ship. Plus. Because He is in house Royal, men who are unmarried would have their contract bought and get snatched up by landed nobility. They may not have money to spare in order to purchase his contract. They could not risk Marline getting married off and being prevented from or at least stonewalled from joining a royal navy ship and stealing a enemy core. Remember that magical men are Shut in for their safety. William was not allowed to learn how to fight or do things considered women’s work or work that could be dangerous. Storming a ship to steal a core would definitely be on the top of the list of things that he would not be allowed to do if he was married. Plus there would be prejudice that he would face if he’s on the ship that might prevent him from being put in the saboteur role and instead as a defender.

Conrad34xdsa

Err, no. William/George AW has indicated he made mistakes several times, going back to chapter one where he thought he might have overdone his annoying family member act. For another example, he admitted that he gave his team insufficient spellbow training, which was why they nearly lost the fight against Tala's team. Clearly, he does not think he cannot make mistakes. He does have a problem because he is the only one who has access to all of his information. Marline is suggesting he talk to his family and explain that the Queen knows about this so they need to stop. Marline has met his family exactly once and he grew up with them. Maybe they will reconsider, maybe they will not, but I can readily understand why he thinks he knows better about how his mother will react. We will see. William the child is effectively dead. Just as if he was a brain-dead victim of a car crash or asphyxiation His body lived on to be inhabited by George. That body influences the mind of George AW, who has to learn to deal with it.

Trevayne

Clearly Marlene doesn't understand how far "I'm build different " will get you.

bob semple

oh shieeet. so william truly isn't an exception to harrow insanity

John

What was the reference?

Moonlightwind

But that’s all based on the assumption that everything William/George has said about himself is true, and we don’t know that. George clearly thinks of himself as infallible, and is blind to his short comings, but they’ve been brought up here as well as a few times in past chapters. In this chapter he’s being confronted by an uncomfortable truth, and the George part of him is rejecting it. We also don’t know why he is like this, or what the infant William asked to make him harrowed. But there is clearly conflict internally, because George is completely inflexible, a fact that was previous attributed to his personality, but perhaps it is a side effect of the harrowing, the need for the knowledge to be used and for whatever was asked for to be achieved or completed. Despite this, some part of him disagrees and wants to trust Marline, and that internal conflict is clearly showcased. It doesn’t seem to be as simple as William became George, George is just information, information that has a will and need to be used, but information none the less, assumedly like any harrowing.

Moonlightwind

Good point, but it still doesn't explain why he would do this. In OTL, pretending to be the other gender usually happens because women were barred from a male activity, like being in the military. In this world, while women may have more power than men, there doesn't seem to be any activity that men are barred from, so why the masquerade?

Trevayne

The 2 seater is a good option.

MarakEvans

Don’t forget at the end of the battle with Tala and Will was crushing his balls in the splits Marline somehow could emphasise with him and had to point it out to their teammates why he was in great discomfort. Something a guy would typically emphasise with and understand immediately.

MASC

They can do whatever they want with her. She would be a 14-year-old heiress in the Blackstone's "safekeeping". She has no power. Just having her in their possession gives the Blackstones some leverage over William because he cares about her. I don't think they fully realize that if something happens to her, William will probably end the Blackstones, family and duchy.

Trevayne

Good question. I think we know that the bolt bows have a range of about 100 meters. William's spellbolt rifled breechloader can do at least 300 meters. I think it said somewhere that the aether cannons mounted on airships can shoot that far or somewhat farther. My personal analogy is that the airship aether cannons are like 18th century carronades. They hit hard but don't have the range of similar caliber long guns.

Trevayne

Seeing William refer to himself as George made an audible "oh shit" come out of me. The mental rattling that he got from that, the little seed of doubt that's likely to grow from this conversation is going to be marvelous. If that seed grows into deadly tangle of thorns, a lush and beautiful garden, or a combination of both it going to be interesting to see.

CW

One thing I’d like to know is, what is the range of the pneumatic cannons that are in play. It was mentioned during the spell-bolt demonstration that cannons reach out to 300 yards. That’s early age of cannon armed vessels from the 1500’s level of effective range.

Conrad34xdsa

The attraction towards women would be explained by being a lesbian, but I agree it does less to explain Marline not showering with anyone. However, is does bring up the question of why? Why would anyone in this society think they need to do this? As William shows, men attending the academy is rare, but not unheard of. IIRC there were several in his year group. So why would a male Marline need to disguise their gender as female and why would his family go along with it? IIRC this was pointed out by VonBaron in an earlier comment. Magic-using males from noble families are a relatively rare commodity. Why would he need to disguise himself? Maybe because they were determined to complete the course and recover a core by force of arms and worried that attending as a man might get them married off before they could do it? That could explain why he might do it, but why would his family go along with it?

Trevayne

My money is that Marline secretly a man. That is a far more dangerous thing to hide but makes sense given the context clues. Does not shower and is not seen undressed for any reason. Has attraction for women exclusively. Being unusually very physically strong Noted to be more stocky for a female dark elf. There are a few comments made by Marline in the first few chapters that mention the value of men for marriages and how they have their limit. (For example, getting a core) If Marline went in to the academy openly as a man. He would have been snatched up and forced into someone else’s retinue. If that happened, he would not be able to claim a Core for himself and for his house. Instead it would go into the possession of whoever he was married to and her house.

Conrad34xdsa

That's some iron willpower to let him fight against fey programming. Impressive Will.

Joe ?

“I thought not,” she hummed, a sad smile on her lips. “It’s alright. I get it. I’m the same. Once you get used to keeping secrets, it’s a hard habit to break.” “Y-” He coughed, his throat strangely dry. “You do?” She smiled softly, some genuine mirth in her tone. “Ah, I’d say that’s another mark against you really being a ‘genius’ if you haven’t figured it out by now. I agree the secret is probably that she is a lesbian. It is clearly something she expects he could figure out. The interesting part is that I don't think this society's attitudes toward non-conventionally heterosexual people has been mentioned. My guess is they don't have a problem with it because given the gender imbalance, not every woman is going to find a heterosexual relationship. I wonder if it is openly acknowledged or just quietly accepted, the way quite a few British women paired up after WW1 because the population of marriageable and age-appropriate men had seriously declined.

Trevayne

Magic makes it so one doesn't need a fine understanding of what you're working with, since it's intent based stuff. Very different from modern science that needs a high degree of understanding of reality, it's constituent pieces, and how they fit (or not) together. I mean, nobody really wants to accidentally atomize themselves which is, while hard to do in the current world, is primarily due to our understanding of what does what, how forces interact, and what is needed to bend reality over our knee safely without, say, beaming our DNA full of radiation and turning into mutants, and not the fun kind.

Dancingrage

It cuts both ways though, without his sister, they can’t get the ducal seat. And if they piss her off ( as in killing her brother) she could pull to the queen’s side. She’s not someone they can just fuck with.

mike wade

Also, how does a watcher know she is about to go into hiding? The smart way to handle this would be to have a party go to the shard hangar and Aunt Karla and his sister get in the two-person shard. They then take off and go. They bring her out for the trip wearing an overcoat over armor and surround her with people so the agent doesn't have a clear shot and can't get close enough to use a knife. The agents don't have ready access to a shard to follow them. They can try some boltbow shots, but I doubt a boltbow is going to bring down a shard.

Trevayne

Agreed. She is not only in the best position to observed him, she is also the freest since she has been relieved of her family obligation to get a core for their ship. She had thought she would be training for another 3-4 years and then she might get the chance to risk her life stealing it from an enemy ship. She is probably still coming to grips with the idea that her goal for the last 10-15 years has been accomplished and she is still alive. I expect this makes her extra observant.

Trevayne

Yes and no. From his mother's perspective, he is already a family traitor because he did not go along with her plans for him. For that matter, he is no longer a part of the family since he is now a Redwater, not an Ashfield. He could try to say the Queen has lots of spies, however, that has the drawback of alerting the Ashfields that the Queen may have agents there. They would probably prefer that the Ashfields remain unaware of the possibility. Another drawback is if the Countess starts going McCarthy on all her servants and retainers. William liked those people. I doubt he would want to see them potentially tortured and/or executed on suspicion of being a spy. Edit: Thinking some more about this, he could say he overheard it while in the palace just before he was to talk to the Queen about the spellbolt.

Trevayne

I doubt she has been harrowed, but if she was I expected it happened during her childhood, probably just after she found out her aunts were dead and the family's fortunes wrecked with the loss of their mithril core. I can see a young girl calling out to the fae and getting an answer in the form of a mind that can train her ruthlessly towards the goal of stealing a shard back and restoring the family fortunes.

Trevayne

Not neccessarily. We know from the first chapter that he had memories from Earth of flying somewhat similar craft, but they could have been fighters or Cessnas or air liners. From chapter 1: "As landings went, it was picture perfect, and rather neatly displayed the difference between a woman with years of flying experience in a Shard and an enthusiastic beginner with little more than book learning and more confidence than sense. Oh, and the possible delusional memories of flying similar craft from another world away, he thought as he watched the canopy of the Drake slide open. Can’t forget those. " At a guess, he became a weapons historian or engineer because he apparently came into contact with a vast array of weapons or was a weapons nerd. His hand brushed over a M68 FRAGMENTATION GRENADE. His hand brushed over a MODEL 870 FIELDMASTER. His hand brushed over a FATMAN NUCLEAR FISSION GRAVITY BOMB. And yet the racks went on and on. Off into the distance, beyond the range of what he knew the warehouse should have been able to hold. Every weapon that GEORGE STATFIELD had ever seen, touched or even read about - even so much as an errant glance.

Trevayne

true. though he is unlikely to talk to his mom with the watchers anywhere around

Morpheus

I don't know how I feel about this. I don't like this ambiguity. I don't trust these feelings. What if one of the "watchers" has contingency orders to execute his sister before she goes into hiding? This ain't good.

MarakEvans

They aren't a complete paradigm shift yet. Aether guns use aether which means a mage has to be involved in the process, to either directly charge the bolt-bows tank or to operate the mithril shard or core providing the pressure. William's spellbolt guns use magic in place of a primer firing system. Once he introduced a chemical priming system the paradigm gets shattered because a weapon exists that can kill, a mage at a longer range then a boltbow without any magic involved at all, aside from the manufacture.

Trevayne

MORE, the wait kills me. I need to BINGE xD

Wolf_Senpai

But was he, or where was he? We know he visited his family during Winterfest and then showed up at Redwater to take possession as its new count a few weeks before the start of his second Blicland year. If summer is 3 months long, did he spend it all with his family or did he visit with the other cadets, since we know he did not get to Redwater before a few weeks before going back for the second year.

Trevayne

If I’m understanding it correctly, it’s less that the Fey have affected his mentality and more that the weapon knowledge is burned into his brain. They’re functionally his core memories, and the fact that he literally can’t forget means that on some level his mind focuses on or revolves around that knowledge

Larynx Punchworthy

Damn, I love the eldritch horror of harrowing. Great chapter.

Isak Mark

I agree with a lot of this with the caveat is there really is no William. William is a name used by George AW because everyone recognizes him as being William. Effectively, this is a story of two Georges. The original George, George BW (Before William), is the one who existed on Earth for 78 years and died of a heart attack. These are the founding memories for both Georges. The second George, George AW (After William), is the current version, an 18-19-year-old who grew up in the Ashfield family home/castle while remembering being a 78-year-old man. He has been seriously affected by this. IIRC there is a reference in an early chapter that said he might have gone mad having to go through being a toddler again with an adult mind, except that he kept himself occupied trying to figure out how magic worked. George AW is not affected by William's mind because it doesn't exist. It was overwritten by the arrival of George BW in William's toddler body. GAW is influenced by William's body because he had to go through puberty again and is currently a teenager again. George BW was 50 years past those feelings. In addition, George AW is under a lot of stress because of his self-appointed mission. He has decided to try to end slavery in Lindholm and hopefully across the world. He has also been planning and roleplaying for at least the last ten years, which adds to his stress levels.

Trevayne

Did Marline intentionally reference Ozymandias from Watchmen? If so, that’s probably a hint that she’s harrowed too, but I choose to believe it’s the author’s fault

Larynx Punchworthy

I'd believe the guy thing if people hadn't been guessing it since Marline appeared. Blue's willing to write a lot of things, but a predictable twist isn't one of them.

ChaosAndBunnies

He might be able to spin it that he's seduced one of the Queen's confidants (Griffith) who leaked the Queen's knowledge of his sister to him

Jacob

Possibly a psychic?

Borisoff72

His biggest problem will be telling his mother the queen knows about his sister without his mother thinking he's the one that told the queen, making him more of a family traitor. He's going to have to persuade her that the queen has intelligence gathering methods that he can't disclose (Queen would see it as treason), that those methods are likely known to the Blackstones, and the Blackstones didn't share that knowledge with the Ashfields.

Jacob

Also I think that's more to do with just people that are old generally, not just boomers

Jacob

That would actually be brilliant 😂

Baron Von Mott

The twist is that Marline is a lesbian but it's because she's also Harrowed and is now inhabited by the personality of a male special forces ranger or spec-ops commando. (I'm joking but I also wouldn't put it past Blue)

Jacob

It's Blue we're talking about here. My money is on curveball

Jacob

I Fully second and endorse this opinion. You said it much better than I ever could

Jacob

Good call on having Marline be the one to start this conversation. She's the one that has been in the best position to observe William's actions and creations. I'm glad to see someone is finally pointing out to the "hero" that he's being kind of dumb and too rigid. Getting some Chaos gods vibes from WH40k here with the whole not being sure if your inventive spirit is a result of your intelligence or an ancient god directing you.

Vonbaron

Considering how valuable noble magic using males are I'd find the MTF option to be hard to believe. William is the only male in the academy that isn't under the control of a woman. Hell William is the only male to be in charge of a county. It's been stated via different characters that magic using noble males are a rare and valuable commodity. So why would Marline's mother go along with the whole cross dressing and or MTF thing? It makes no sense based on what we know as a male would be extremely useful for a house that has been down on it's luck for many years now due to losing their mithril core. Marline admitting to being gay would be no big deal to William but in that world it would be considered something huge and scandalous (remember Evan?).

Vonbaron

Nah, it took US might be that long only because their "aerodynamic bothers those who can't make good engines" early aerodesign doctrine. European countries figured that before WW2, it's less than 40 years.

Vlad Cold

> "“Ok,” Marline said, eerily calm now. “Assuming your mother does exactly what you’re worried about… is that a problem? For you, not Lindholm. After all, your sister’s now safe and Queen suddenly has less leverage over you." Seems like the obvious is missing that the Blackstones would become aware of William's care for his sister and now have a hostage at their disposal.

DMR1

Our dear cadet Ashfield is going to invent the OODA loop

DMR1

The second part of this chapter was amazing. I always love how you subvert expectations with your characters, and show them to fallible. It feels like the main character is often built up and steadily put on a pedestal, until it all comes crashing down from something outside of their field of view, and by extension the readers. When we take the things he says and believes at face value we get lulled into the same perspective as him. Then when we then find out that the narrator isn’t actually as reliable as he seems, the whole story changes and we question all the things we think we know about the world and William. The switch to George’s internal monologue was inspired. That there is kind of a war between essentially two entities inside of William, as much as he thinks of himself as just George it’s clear that that’s not entirely accurate. That William didn’t just become George and that George is blind to the faults or compulsions he’s subject to, and that they do conflict on some things. Great Chapter as always, look forward to the next one.

Moonlightwind

Will's guns are an improvement in range and penetrating power. They're not a complete paradigm shift, but they are a significant improvement.

cafenacet

Yes, good point. He seems to be arriving at his county near the end of the summer break because he asks for a two-seat shard for only a fortnight so his team can practice with it. “I need a Unicorn or some other kind of practice two-seater to be flown out to us. Just for the next fortnight.” It might be a little longer since he does talk about a new month here. “Well, I guess we can call this a success,” he called out to the nearby blacksmiths. “Let’s see what other improvements we can get started on before I’ve got to go back to school.” A stunned silence greeted him, before a look of determination seemed to flash across the entire crowd. Perhaps in different circumstances someone might have cheered at the success of the ‘impossible’ that had just occurred. But given it had been him alone who’d developed it, that failed to materialize. Instead, all it had done was brought to life a flare of competitiveness amongst the many craftsmen. And he could work with that. Oh, he could definitely work with that. After all, he had a great many things planned for the new month. And these would be the people who would need to implement those things into a finished design once he flew back to the academy to start making the connections needed to actually leverage said inventions.

Trevayne

Thinking about his talking to his family, I wonder if this conversation will go differently because he is now a count in his own right and his mother's social equal. After all, while she knows he is responsible for some innovations like the flash bang and the spellbolt, and she suspects he is responsible for the krakenslayer, does she think they are sufficient to get a new county or is she wondering about what else he might be coming up with or might have already invented? For that matter, I suspect the Queen delayed announcing his new title until after his Winterfest visit to his family. I don't remember any mention of his new title in chapters 31 and 32 and I find it hard to believe that it would not have been mentioned by somebody if they knew he was now a count. In addition, he was able to get the guards to allow the team access to the shards because he was still part of the family. Now that he has his own title, I think he has a new name and is a new family of one. I still think she is not yet going to switch sides, but I think William may see her wavering. If he can come up with an explanation for why they are going to lose, she might well go for it. At present, she is still going off her own life experience which tells her the crown is going to lose and that she is on the winning side. William just saying she is wrong isn't going to cut it. He needs to provide an explanation for how and why the Blackstones are going to lose, not just an assertion.

Trevayne

there is definitely some timeline strangeness going on at this place too. the amount of time they spent there with him inventing feels like it was pretty long. definitely longer than the stated '2 weeks' And somehow Tala was gone a year, despite it having just been a summer. There is some strangeness in the timeline.

Morpheus

Yeah we've seen pic of people suspecting, like the queen, just glad to see someone confront him on it and him be on the back foot about

Papa Pepperoni

Given that he has a whole previous lifetime's worth of experience, he is right about that. However, he needs to remember that while that makes it likely he is right about a given issue; it does not mean he is certain to be right. Amusingly, I think he is probably from the Silent Generation, the one before the Boomers. If his heart attack and "death" transition happened in 2024 when he was 78, he would have been born in 1946 or earlier, so possibly a very early Boomer but more likely Silent. We know he was 78, because his combined age was 96, including 18 years as William.

Trevayne

Especially since this is such a horrible commenting system. I am used to sites using xenforo like spacebattles or alternatehistory where when I am notified of a like or a response to my comment, I can click and be brought immediately to that comment. Not like Patreon where it brings me to the chapter and I have to find it myself. It is even worse with likes because there is no way of telling who liked something unless you only have one comment. For that matter, it lets you like your own stuff. The only site I know of with a worse commenting system is fanfiction.net, where you can only make one comment (it is supposed to be a review) for any given story post.

Trevayne

Yes and no. The new William isn't just "George", he is a blending. He is "George" stuck in "William's" body so while he thinks using "George's" memories, his thoughts are influenced by "William's" body and hormones. In other words, he is a composite person with George's software running on William's hardware and getting modified by the new memories of the new person. IIRC "William" was too young to have much in the way of memory and none that were solely his exist any more.

Trevayne

Probably not, but in a way that is actually surprising. The world has a feudal social structure with an almost 19th-century tech base. Effectively it went from the 1400s to the 1800s without passing through the Renaissance or the Enlightenment. This suggests it doesn't have the institutions that would lead to industrialized research the way it worked in our world. Thus innovations would usually come from innovative individuals. Although, from some mentions in the story, the big innovations may have come from harrowings.

Trevayne

George also has the Boomer mindset of, "You're just a kid, of course I'm right I've got a lot more experience."

Househut21

Oh, I suspect others definitely suspect, but the thing is, he *acts* far too sane for most people to sort it out. A few suspect who've seen some of the shit he comes up with and then go, 'But he's not a gibbering madman, he can't be harrowed'. Even to us, who KNOW he's harrowed, it comes across like Will is crazy like a fox, not crazy like an asylum, when the truth is it's actually both.

Dancingrage

A calendar and/or timeline question. I was rereading the story and noticed that a semester is six months and the academic year seems to be two semesters separated by a break and a longer summer break. This suggests that either the world's year is longer, say 15 months, or the semesters include the breaks and the actual class time is about 4.5-5 months. We see William enter his first year at the beginning of his first year. He is there for six months before the fight with Tala's team at the end of the first semester (chapter 28). There is some kind of semester break of indeterminate length. The meeting with the Queen (ch 29) and the call to his mother (ch 30) are right after the fight. Then we William and his team visiting his family at the start of book 2. This is apparently after a six month timeskip covering the second semester of year one. "Indeed, he hadn’t. He’d promised to visit for Winterfest and he had. Which his sister acknowledged, even as her quiet frown remained in place. “No, you haven’t. And make no mistake, I appreciate that you managed to make the trip. I can’t imagine it was easy to persuade your new… patron to allow you the freedom.” We then see him going to visit his new territory and take over. He then spends at least 1-2 months working on projects over the "summer". I am still trying to wrap my head around a "summer" that includes a "Winterfest", but then I am from the northern hemisphere. It still doesn't change the basic point, that either the year has more than 12 months or a semester includes the "summer" time off. I suspect more than 12 months because William had six months to prepare for the fight with Tala. The semesters are probably in Earth terms winter/ spring and fall/winter with a 3-5 month summer and a shorter mid-year break of 2-5 weeks.

Trevayne

I'm really hoping for some tasty family trauma next chapter.

MaybeASquid

I think William's lack of networking skills is overstated. This is the same person who knew nearly all his family's servants by name. He spent the first semester wheeling and dealing with the leaders of most of the first and second-year teams to try to get additional training time. Thus, he had to know them enough to deal. I can fully understand his not knowing much about the twins or their House Plumgarden rival because they were third-years during his first year and they are fourth-years now. Still, he should have a good idea of who the second and third-year team leaders are because he was dealing with them regularly. Maybe he might forget the earlier team leaders from his current year because he focused on getting matches against teams from the second year once those from his own year became too easy to beat.

Trevayne

Finally, we're going to get an answer to the question of whether Marline is a guy in disguise, or just lesbian! (Or maybe there's something else entirely at work? I wouldn't put it past Blue to throw us a curveball...)

Baron Von Mott

I don’t recall the chapter but William did mention how magic made understanding natural laws very difficult. They have healing spells, and thus do not understand very basic medical concepts. It may be that William’s emphasis on chemistry and engineering breakthroughs are what sets him apart from past geniuses.

22junk

Good question. It isn't clear, but I don't think shards are more than 20-30 years old. They seem to be about as mature as WW1/1920s aircraft in terms of capability. I expect part of their advantage was that they have been using airships for centuries, so have been thinking in 3-D terms for much longer. The other problem with shards is they can't do much to airships. While the shards have heavy automatic aether cannons, heavy is relative to a boltbow, not to the aether cannon carried by air ships. Without explosives, they are basically limited to strafing exposed personnel and trying to put bullets into vision ports. The only other options seem to be "javelins" which are apparently armor-piecing dart-like "bombs" that are either solid or hollow with an incendiary payload. This means that shards are limited to recon and fighting other shards. I think the new Basilisk heavy shard from House Whitemorrow is an attempt to change this.

Trevayne

Anyone else feel like this is gonna backfire? Great chapter.

The Futurama reference is on point, *chefs kiss*

gtuttle00

As far as my reading goes, no. They have a much less classically progressive view of things, where society doesn't change. The exception is the Harrowed, where basically all innovations come from.

Hikaraka

The problem is that from his mother's perspective, she is doing the right thing for her family, and even for Lindholm. She sees that the crown has gotten into a situation leading to a military confrontation with the biggest and most combat-experienced ducal fleets on Lindholm. While the Royal Navy is good, its allies in the southern duchies are soft and unprepared. Shge thinks the crown is going to lose, so best to ensure its defeat is as fast and bloodless as possible. She has no idea that William can come up with things that can change this situation. William's problem is that he can't really tell her anything, only make vague threats and assurances. Remember this from chapter 33: His mother remained stony faced. “Everything I do, I do for the family. The entire family.” William ran a hand through his hair as he glared at her. “Just not any one member of it.” “Now you’re beginning to understand.” He turned to leave, though not before casting a few final words over his shoulder. “Four years. That’s how long I have to change your mind regarding this madness. You’ll see. One way or another, House Blackstone will lose this war.” His mother sees him as a petulant teenager. He says the Blackstones will lose, but he can't possibly make good on that. She may be wondering at how he is rising and where the ideas are coming from, but from her perspective, unless the crown actually has a good chance against the Blackstones and New Havens, why should she switch? What I would like to see added to this the next time they have a chat is something like this: "You think I don't care about this family as much as you do. I assure you that when Eleanor Blackstone is tried, attainted, and executed for treason. I will still try hard to see that you don't follow her to the executioner block and this family retains its county."

Trevayne

Considering the time period I doubt the MtF idea, at most I could see a cross dressing situation in a similar vain to Milan.

Luke Payne

How long has thus world had shards? It took the US 50+ years to crack energy-manuverability, and that was with a lot more pilots and a more innovative culture.

Hikaraka

Great update, with lots to think about. Somebody has picked up on Wililiam's oddity and thought about why. It is fitting that Marline is that person. She was raised as a fanatic, dedicated to the goal of stealing a mithril core in combat to restore her family's status. Completely unexpectedly, she accomplished that goal by working with her crazy as a fox team leader. Now to an extent, she is at loose ends. In some ways, she reminds me of a Japanese kamikaze pilot in training spared by the end of the war. Between that and her immense gratitude towards William she is primed to think about what happened and William's weirdness. I expect her being lesbian also helps in that not being attracted to William she can be more objective about him, at least compared to the rest of the team. William reminds me of Niven's Pak protectors in a way. They were supposed to be very intelligent beings with limited free will. If they are so intelligent they can always tell the best option in a given situation, do they actually have the free will to choose a less than optimal response? William's problem is he has been planning and thinking alone about ending slavery for the last 15 years or so and he has convinced himself that he has the best answers. That, coupled with the age of George's memories (IIRC he was about 78 when he had his heart attack and "died"), makes it harder to convince himself there are other options. He "knows" he has thought about them all and dismissed them. Hopefully, he can accept that it is a good idea to bounce his thoughts against someone else. If they are really the best options, she will tell him and if she can point out problems then maybe they weren't the best choices. This should also clarify if the current geas covers his secrets past those involved in building and using the krakenslayer. If it doesn't, I expect George will ask for another geas to keep his secrets going forward. Since she already has a similar geas, she might well accept another, related one. If she declines and he talks to her anyway, that is character growth on his part, getting by his own paranoia about secrecy.

Trevayne

"Now, one or two innovations I could understand. But you just keep pulling more and more absurd ideas out of your ass.”. Is this so weird to an elf that their first thought is harrowing? Has this world never seen an Edison or a Da Vinci?

Borisoff72

This is the first time besides in his dreams that William has mentally referred to himself as George. He is deeply rattled.

mike wade

You really can't trust a Fae, or to put it another way. "Never trust an Elf!"

JaxonJak

The last chance his family has to do the right thing. All thanks to a dark elf who figured out William’s secret. Let’s see if they see reason or try to double down and forever end up on William’s shit list.

Oneofmanynames385

Yes, William has been gifted with the knowledge to produce great hammers so all his problems start to look like nails.

Trevayne

Oh man, you're so good at teasing out these dramatic reveals!! Great chapter as usual. Sometime before the end of the year I'd like to go back and re-read from chapter 1, just to catch up on what I've forgotten and see how far Will/George has come from jump

Nicholas Roberts

mmmm tasty exposition on William’s Harrowing. It seems the elf has him figured out to push his buttons like that. I also like the sudden division of character between George and William, like up till now they were incredibly synchronized. I imagine this is why he hasn’t gone insane like other victims of harrowing! With this sudden turn of events i do hope William’s Sanity isn’t in danger.

Monday

They have a gun equivalent, but having a rear mounted propeller means that it is easily targetable, and can't be armored. Imagine shooting at the rear of a fan boat. A front mounted propeller can be smaller for the same speed through the air (on what we consider a typical airframe), and makes it harder for an attacker to hit something vital.

Kuratenshi

Because William was focused on running his land and projects all summer rather than staying in shape.

Andrew Lechner

George was a fighter Pilot.

Andrew Lechner

Fixed, thanks :D

Blue Fishcake

I'm a bit confused about the Harrowing. I thought that asking your Fae a question almost inevitably ended with a download of information so vast that it broke your mind, and the fact that baby William got exactly 1 single lifetime of memories was a stroke of luck. By using the computer metaphor in his dreams he could ask further questions so specific they couldn't be interpreted as "show me every plane engine from every dimension to the end of time" and resulting in him getting Harrowed. This chapter makes it seem like anyone asking any question is Harrowed, and there are simply degrees of madness. Is allowing the alien Fae to touch your mind at all what makes you Harrowed, and learning the extent of a topic "right up until the heat-death of the universe" simply makes it worse? The chapter 39 with the invisible guardswomen tells us that Harrowed people are halfway lucid and focused on a specific theme, like explosions. Is William inclined to only concoct plans that George would be useful in, and since having a heart to heart with his mother doesn't involve George his Harrowing pushes him away from that plan? I'm struggling to remember what George did for a living/ where his talents lay. What chapters should I reread?

22junk

I'd give chapter nine a re-read as that goes into a reasonable amount of detail :D

Blue Fishcake

ya. My own stories have readers. i even get paid. But the lack of comments does get to me sometimes.

Morpheus

Predictions: 1a) Marline comes clean about her sexuality (can’t remember Ch. number but it was heavily hinted that she preferred women). OR 1b) Marline is MTF and that’s why she remains clothed and separate from the group. AND/OR 1c) Marline has a thing for William since she became his confidant and he helped out her house. (Least likely IMO, at least currently) 2) William/George comes partially clean with the Harrowing, but leaves out the fact that George’s current existence is the result of a young William’s initial Harrowing effectively killing the child and replacing him with George’s mind.

Dovahpriest

Why was William coughing up a lung after the run when all the other cadets were fine?

Wait I'm confused, I thought they didn't have guns in this tech level isn't that why William's guns are important? Why does the Drake have guns?

Quixotic

Great chapter!

great update

Marius Petrauskas

Or it could imply a deeper philosophy regarding psychology. Perhaps the Fae didn't alter anything, perhaps simply by the nature of what he is, a man armed with knowledge in a new life, a man who had to hide and keep secrets in this new life, a man with power seeking a purpose, it is only a natural consequence of psychology that he is drawn to conflict.

Oreo-belt25

During the "are you harrowed" scene, you used the term "drama queen" when I assume you meant king. I bet William is going to be doubting his own motives quite a lot now, but maybe that's for the best.

Beep

Hmm a harrowing chapter 🤔

werotan

Thank you!

Andrew

Aw thanks :D I definitely wanted to explore the ick factor of a reincarnation story and I'd like to think I'm doing so *without* turning the whole story into a big angst fest. It's a fun concept and I feel the subtle offness of the whole situation only serves to add spice.

Blue Fishcake

So this could imply that while Geroge is in control, the Fay could somehow have altered his mentality. Compelling him towards conflict or a desire to test his weapons.

sir_drop_kick

Ah, so it seems there’s a possibility that William/George’s thought processes might be somewhat more compromised than he thinks. There could be an instinctive drive to actually use his knowledge and memories, and to seek out scenarios in which they are required, over easier or simpler paths. It did seem unlikely that there would be no downside to such dealings with the Fey.

Rowan Ruble

"George twitched" nice detail

Oreo-belt25

I love the idea of harroeing, the idea that the knowledge you received could be *ALIVE* in a sense. It's a really fun way to make the knowledge you gain by harrowing dangerous. Even if everything goes right you're basically inviting a demon into your mind to constantly nag at your brain.

Caleb Gurney

*George* flinched did he, eh?

Toby

If this is the result of a frustrating day I'd like to let you know it's worth it. Even if the chapter is shorter you managed to pack in so much character development while also adding on a lesson on aerial combat. I love the exploration of William/George having to face the fact that he's NOT George anymore, and the idea that Harrowed people have static memories so George is incapable of change but William might be, honestly bravo. I'm not really a steampunk guy and the whole "older guy going back into a younger body" is a bit of an ick for me but you've made it into a seriously captivating story.

Daniel Chittenden

Here is something I didn't think of... What if George's contractor is manipulating him into using the knowledge he is asking for? Just so he will need to ask for more? Holy hells the idea is just...so...perfect. It would force him to double think himself at every turn. He NEEDS to tell someone he can trust about his situation, just so he can have a check to balance out any emotional influence he might not be aware of.

Kaywye

Ooh and well done with twisting our heartstrings on the second part!

The Fire Piper

Mein gott, we're finally seeing some cracks in Williams/Georges party line here. And by Marline of all people. Though considering what they've already been through, makes sense in retrospect. Fantastic work wordsmith!

PalindromeJoe

Huh, the old man is a little too stuck in his ways, huh. Those ways may be new and bizarre to everyone on this world, but apparently one person has known him long enough to put together a pattern. William's personally is wholly that of George, so he should be far resistant to that kind of side effect, but even it's minor influence combined with his old mental age are probably enough to give him a limited range of preferred courses of action.

Andrew Lechner

Woot! Character growth! William's not choosing the renegade option!
