Gods & Religion for Draw Steel

So this is a lot, let's talk about it.

What a cool treat to read, I rally loved this.

Michael Hughes

What an absolutely wonderful piece of writing. It makes these different peoples come to life!

Kevin

I saw the trading places reference too :)

Alex

It took me a while but I read the whole thing and every word was a treat!

Alex

That was an epic read. I now want to be a conduit to one of these

I love the bit about Grole teaching that even in death you have one last act of revenge. It's a neat justification for why Orcs get a death throws attack.

Irving Flanagan

This is so good. I could read 100 pages of this. I know that's an insane opinion and this probably does need a lot of trimming but... man, I don't want to lose a word of it. I could see an entire book on this topic, if the game really does well. Thellasko is so great. I might have to sneak a God of Wargaming into my own setting now.

Mirage the Fennec

Love this write up. My setting will eat well on it's strong bones long after the editing happens.

Joe Auerbach

I read ethnographies for enjoyment, so stuff like this is so my jam

Not D&D, Kreigspeil!!

Hive_Indicator

Love this! Thellasko created chess but that wasn't good enough so he created tabletop RPGs (chain mail, d&d, etc.); brilliant!

Steve Ross

The mention of Yllindirs was really evocative after Priest. It really reinforced the vibe of them as balrogs, leftovers of longpast wars.

Thea Emilia Ágústsdóttir

Rediscovering Kas Koriar would be such a fun adventure.

Paul L.

I want to know so much more about Valok-Koth!

Paul L.

I’m a sucker for tales of people doing great things despite impossible odds.

lone-rev

That DS9 reference in Kuyalka's description, I see you Matt!

Antonio Padilha

Oh, this definitely takes me back to when I was a kid and would pour over books recounting myths and fables of all these different cultures, in a way that I don’t really see anymore. The idea of there being a god built around the concept of an “honest day’s work”, that they literally believe that the hardest worker is also the most truthful, is REALLY good. It was incredibly evocative of the vibe of the culture there, like I completely understand how I would roleplay someone who listened to these stories growing up and had it shape their traditions and values.

While I absolutely love what Matt did to deities and saints as a whole, (including teasing history around all the species, orcs being my favorite) I am especially smitten by that devil saint who invented chess. Absolutely an amazing idea for an object of worship!

minyoo

I am absolutely in love with the timescape. It’s the exact right blend of sci fi and fantasy for me

Ryan

This is PURE GOLD. So much meat. I just want to mull over this for a good long time. Thanks for sharing the goods Matt!

Brian Diehl

Oh boy, a hefty read indeed. I think this might be one of my favorite reads simply because religion/cosmology it is one area of worldbuilding where I have *specific ideas* for how it works in my own game world, which often differs or even clashes with the ideas for Orden (like literally as early as the first sentence, lol). It really gets my own creative juices flowing thinking about what makes sense to me as is and what doesn't, and more importantly why. Plus it's one of those areas where game mechanics more directly intersect with the worldbuilding than others, so thinking about how those makes sense in my world is a lot of fun.

David L

This is exactly what I needed for Matt's whole 'veneration of the saints rather than the gods' concept to click for me, the understanding that these are people you would want to emulate. Every one of these entries made me want to play a different character built for just that saint. Yes, I would absolutely like to visit the church of the Trading Places Devil, thank you for asking.

Ben Clarke

I’m not saying that MCDM’s next big project after Draw Steel should be a full on tabletop wargame based on The Game of War from today’s Patreon post…. But I’m not not saying that either.

Bill French

Wow, I wanted to go to bed early... but now I want to create a Tactician who learned at the Academy of Dis... or find Kas Koriar... I love this!
