ARCADIA 8

Hello patrons!

It is I, your James Introcaso, here to share the ins and outs of ARCADIA 8. First, let’s bask in the glory of another Sean Andrew Murray cover. Zoom in on the cover and check out the detail this artist puts into his work. Truly mind blowing.

Inside ARCADIA 8:

Subclasses of the Hag by Jessica Marcrum

Harness the power of wicked fey and fiends with three new subclasses: the Hag warlock patron, the Wicked Witch sorcerous origin, and the bardic College of Grandmother’s Tales. If you’re a fan of hags (or just witchy goodness) you’re going to enjoy the way these subclasses tap into the titular creature’s power. The wicked art in this article comes from MCDM staff artist Grace Cheung.

Monstrous Components by V.J. Harris

This is easily one of the most robust ARCADIA articles yet. Now you can harvest monster parts and use them in your spellcasting. How does feather fall change when you cast it with an angel feather? What happens when you use an ancient red dragon’s breath gland to cast fireball? Get to butchering and find the answers! Monster organ art in this article comes from MCDM start artist and art outsource manager Nick De Spain.

The Emerald Exchange by Bianca Bickford

Need to buy some magic items? Emerald can help! Just don’t ask how her humble little shop acquired that flametongue and helm of teleportation … yeah, you got us. It was a secret thieves’ guild! Elisa Serio and Miska Fredman created the beautiful art in this article.

Advertisements

This is the first issue of ARCADIA to feature advertisements from other companies. Any ads that appear in ARCADIA will always be related to tabletop gaming. You won't see ads for cars or life insurance in these pages. Rather, we want to show you cool advertisements for things we think you might like: roleplaying games, board games, RPG accessories, and the like.

This is an experiment! If the ads are successful and folks seem to like the products, then you'll likely see some more in future issues. If the ads don't work, we may adjust our strategy. We think you'll like what's inside!

Come Hang Out!

FAQs

Q: How long will I be able to download the ARCADIA PDF attached to this post?

A: Indefinitely. Though this wasn’t the case at launch, our policy has changed. All issues of ARCADIA remain attached to their launch posts. You can read more about it here.

Q: I know someone who wants to get a copy of ARCADIA, but they don't want to use Patreon. Is there somewhere else they can get it?

A: Definitely, and we understand! That's why, when we post the current issue of ARCADIA to Patreon, we add it to the MCDM Shop at the same time :D. On the MCDM Shop an issue of ARCADIA is $7.

Q: I want to submit an article for ARCADIA. How do I do that?

A: Thanks for your interest, but we currently don’t accept open submissions — you can check out this post to learn more about how we source articles for ARCADIA.

Q: What is this... an FAQ for ANTS? I have a question and it's not one of the ones listed here!

A: Oh no! D: If you need help with anything MCDM-related, email our support inbox (hello@mcdmproductions.com) and we'll respond as soon as we can. We're looking forward to reaching the point where we can bring on a dedicated support team member to help everyone lickety-split, but until we get there we try to check for new messages every week or two. We've got many tools at our disposal, so rest assured that when you hear back from us we will do everything we can to make sure you're taken care of! :)

Comments

Yeah, I tend to like curated ads that are chosen this way. I _want_ to know about cool products and brands I may want to support that I may never see or know about otherwise.

BJ Keeton

i actually like the idea of curated Ads like Matt described because I sort of miss the ads that comics and dragon had from back in the day.

Bryan Gillispie

I also have no problem with relevant advertisements. "Fish gotta swim, birds gotta eat"

Malthasian

In the way you are describing them, ads sound like a great addition. One key line for me: the only time I would like to read, "Side effects may include..." is tied to an in-world product ad like they do on LUQ podcasts.

Jason McSorley

Thumbs up for ads :)

Jeppe Juul Rasmussen

Just want to say I support the ads! Which, in this world, feels very strange. But I do.

Damen Cook

I see no issue with the ads as you have them in this issue. Unobtrusive, potentially interesting to your audience and they help you with costs. I'm sure Arcadia isn't a huge money maker for MCDM and I'd like to see you keep our price as low as you can and still be able to pay designers and artist a fair wage - if Ads help you do this, so be it!

JesseMax

Fantastic issue as always. Also a great Arcadia 8 Q&A with James. Such a pleasure to see the people behind the articles (and MCDM) and hear their stories. Please bring on more of the artists as well! Ads are perfectly fine as long as they're relevant, just as you say. An in-game insurance company could be a fun article (of a nefarious, evil organisation). =D

Axel Tojo

I love the idea of RPG-centered ads.

David Carlyle

Ads are kinda cool, they do add to that ~magazine~ vibe

Julian Viancha

Ads don’t bother me.

Natalia Angel Menking

I like the idea of ads at the end too. I also think they could look a bit better still. The ads weren't as high quality as the rest of the document.

Ben Campbell

Commenting to be yet another vote for ads at the end of the issue. I do like the ads, but I'd prefer if they be extras after I've already read the great content.... or something I could scroll to very deliberately because I remember having seen an ad. If this were a print magazine then the inline ads would make tons of sense... but in this format it feels bad.

Matthew Boyce

I have to admit, I really, really, really, really like the ads because of their relevancy. It's the equivilant to a good friend saying around the table; "hey, have your heard of X?" I don't have to buy it, but it's super cool to have it linked. I imagine the relevance of ads is #1 on your priority list, so not for me to tell you otherwise, but if it helps you guys I'm all for it

Adam Hetherington

The ads are a nice addition. Like the ads in some single issue comic books, I think they give the magazine a fun feeling of community and it's nice to see what kind of relevant things people are making.

NicoFelino

magazine's have traditionally had ads (and still cost money) and it's an easy way to connect folks with cool stuff and get more money for MCDM so I say go for it. I thought they were fine and I generally am not into ads.

Thisjus10

The inspiration coins in the ad on p.35 seem a bit low quality, especially due to the typos on the one prominent red one to the top right.

Benjamin Bandelow

Love the cover art as well as the the awesome article from V.J. Harris on Monstrous Components. Also don't mind ads. Keep it up all!

CrazyCyber

I also remember fondly the ads in Dragon magazine, and welcome them in Arcadia!

Timothy Schuster

The ads are too easy to scroll/flip past*. If they genuinely help give more exposure to smaller, true-to-heart projects (which they do) and they help you guys bring in a little extra money to help pay the writers of these fantastic articles/modules/doo-hickies, then double win. Can't wait to drop the Emerald Exchange right into the heart of Neverwinter as well as have give my party wizard these additional options for spell components. Never a dry issue. Thank you for everything and we are all James Introcaso. * - edit: too easy as in, if you don't like advertisements, you can flip past them with ease. In my opinion, it neither diminishes or greatly enhances the experience, but I love that it spotlights up-and-coming creators!

Cole Epley

and i was working on my own list on components for enchantments, this is a good add-in, thanks

Lion Arar

I really am a big fan of Arcadia and I‘m using quite a lot of stuff in my campaign. My feedback on the ads: disappointing. I was expecting D&D related stuff only and the board game is not. And who uses inspiration anyway? Plus: even if I wanted to buy the board game or the chips shipping to Germany would be required which is expensive in relation to the price of the products. If you keep the ads, I‘d say it should be at least one digital product and only D&D stuff!

Andreas Heitmann

Another excellent product. Definitely looking forward to seeing what I can implement from the monster components article in my home game. I have no problem with the ads. So long as they're kept outside of articles and it doesn't become a situation like old print mags where every article is bookended with ads.

Rael Stanley

Fine with the ads. Found the dragon part of the Monstrous Components section somewhat confusing, because it's organised differently to all of the other parts of that section - i.e. the organising principle of the other parts is, "here is the monster part, it does x for these spells", whereas for the dragons part, it's "here is the spell affected, for which you require x dragon part".

Leon Obrenov

I am all for the ads, especially considering their inclusion is almost certainly helping to support Arcadia's incredible price point. The creators absolutely deserve more money than they make off of Arcadia's sales alone, but I cannot afford a more expensive monthly magazine, so the inclusion of ads is a healthy compromise that I fully support.

Ian Daniel Aalderink

Personally, I'd love to see a column with reader-written monsters, similar to White Dwarf's Fiend Factory

Euphonetics

Great articles and wonderful art (again)! So much fun to read and definitely some ideas I can use. Regarding the ads: I do not mind them inbetween the articles, but I would prefer them to be at the end of the magazine. I would still read them - but this way they would not break the "spell" of enjoying the magazine like a piece of art. I would absolutely hate ads within an article.

Dogsarethebestpeople

love the ads

Erik Cameron

I certainly didn't mind the ads. I got to read the whole article without the ads intruding. The different art styles were a little jarring, but overall I didn't mind there presence.

Suns

A giant enlarged thumbs down for the ads. If you want to actually review and highlight interesting products, I'm OK with that, though.

Mark Blair

I can see ads being somewhat charming, but I'd have to wait a few issues to see if I still feel that way after a while. If they can help us get more content, I'll take 'em. I'm a little wary on principle on allowing ads into spaces I'm not forced to. I'm interested in thinking up uses for that hag content, but I know immediately that I can't wait to throw in those monster parts! I have two players in the same campaign who are both playing bookish types, so I'm constantly trying to find material I can toss in the world for whenever they walk in looking for books, and I think I'm going to redact certain sections of the Monstrous Components article (so it can pass as diegetic content) and release it into their local library.

Claire Buzzelli

I dislike the idea of adding ads to Arcadia, that being said I really liked the second ad and I'm going to be using the inspiration tokens in my game now and possibly buying some from the creator, so I'm very conflicted... didn't care for the kickstarter ad though, personally I dislike the D&D kickstarters cause everybody and their mother has their own idea for a 5e supplement and the market feels overinflated with 5e supplements. Otherwise LOVE the articles this week. Keep up the good stuff.

Nick Karlovich

Ads are cool. I looked through some old Dragon Magazines I have and they would not have seemed nearly as vibrant without those eye candy ads. Go Ads.

Astromech12

Only 2 ad's! You guys aren't really complaining about 2 tabletop related ad's right?

SamDark

Anyone else having trouble downloading the color pdf on the mobile app? For some reason I can only select the greyscale version

Runtz

I don't feel like ads fit the aesthetic, for lack of a better term, they're 'immersion breaking'. The appeal of a curated and carefully crafted D&D magazine is what made me become a MCDM patron. I love Arcadia, but the ads, although a cool idea in principle, don't feel right to have in between these wonderful and well produced articles. It does also feel a little strange to have ads in a piece of media specifically funded through community patrons. I would prefer them to not be there in all honesty, for much the same reasons as others have already listed and from looking through other comments, I feel like putting them at the end of the magazine, in their own section, would be a good compromise, if they have to stay at all.

Zack Bensted

One issue with the ads, The Red Dragon Inn art felt out of place juxtaposed with the normal style of Arcadia. MCDM Art is phenomenal as always. Super cool with a Hag/witchy subclass selection. I have been getting annoyed with the idea of the Hexblade lately, cheaply skirting around what could've been more interesting in order to give the Warlock a SAD Gish option. 'Ethereal' in the Ethereal Hag stat block for the Bard subclass is spelled wrong. 'Monstrous Components' provides some nifty optional objectives the party can hit while tracking down a BBEG, very cool.

Dan Stadelman

The ads were cool. Would be nicer if the inspiration coins one didn't have so many spelling and grammar mistakes. Not likely to buy a product like that.

Jacob Montague

The black-and-white version of the magazine doesn't have Matt's "Ads?!" article listed in the table-of-contents, the colour version does. Neither version has the "Ads?!" article in the PDF bookmarks. The PDF bookmarks in the colour version lists the "Dragon" heading as being on page 16, while the black-and-white version lists it (correctly) as being on page 18. Thanks for adding sub-headings to the PDF bookmarks, by the way! Re: ads, the "Inspiration Coins" ad was exactly the sort of "neat stuff you might want to buy" I was promised. I don't think I *do* want to buy it right now, but it's a cool idea and hey, if I change my mind, the ad's still there. Thumbs up! On the other hand, the Tales From The Red Dragon Inn ad was... not what I was expecting. If I were a pre-existing fan of TftRDI, I might feel differently, but knowing nothing other than what appears in the ad... it's a new RPG? Or just an adventure module for an existing RPG? And I can't even buy it yet, it's just a Kickstarter? There's like a million adventure modules on DM's Guild already, why doesn't this ad tell me what makes this one special or notable? This may be "neat stuff I want to buy" but I can't tell from here.

Screwtapello

The ads are fine for me. I cant believe how great these magazines are. They give me so much inspiration. The components of the monsters are amazing. I gonna use them in my next campaign. The emerald exchange is also really great. It works great in my world i am building right now. Thanks to all of MCDM and the creators for putting so much effort into these magazines.

Zergaholic95

I wouldn't mind the ads if they were at the end of the issue. I'm also more likely to read them that way without just flipping right passed them.

Stevey Walsh

Personally, the ads are fine, but it does bring me out of the experience of reading it. I have no personal relation to old D&D magazines, but I do get the motivation for it. I think if the ads layout/art-style is coordinated with the rest of the magazine, it wouldn't be as jarring, but it might also confuse readers.

Adrian Szabo

i appreciate the idea of these ads, but i think they get in the way. i agree with others that it would be better at the end of the article, rather than interrupting the flow

Valentine Hutchinson

Dope content as always guys. Not a fan of ads at all, I signed up for cool new dnd content and I consider paying through Patreon as a valid way to avoid advertisements in the content I consume. Doesn’t matter to me if they’re curated or not, I see and hear enough ads in my daily life that inserting it into my dnd content isn’t neat to me.

Ben McLees

Ads are the reason youtube (and in some way the internet itself) has become an annoying platform to share stuff. Ads are the reason a walk around the block can actually be exhausting instead of refreshing, because you are bombarded with them. Ads are ubiquitous and every space that comes without them is a treasure.

Franz Schädler

Looking forward to check all these out!

Rakbel316

I also love Arcadia, but not very fan of the ads. I like the idea of getting to know other, curated, products that exist out there. I particularly like how Sly Flourish does the 'spotlights' in his podcast, showing off other products. I understand that mini reviews of products is not what you are aiming at here, but maybe consider moving the adds all together to the end of the PDF, so that they can form a section on it's own. That way they are more 'opt in', in the sense that you can just stop reading if you want to skip the ads, or you can easily find them (they could have an entry in the index) if you want to check out other cool stuff. I very much appreciate that the ads are not mixed in the same pages as the articles though, please keep it that way!

Lucas Chiesa

I love Arcadia, but I really hate ads. I would greatly appreciate an ad-free version. That said if you do decide to keep them, I'm not gonna unsubscribe or anything, please just keep them full-page because it makes them reasonably easy to remove by using print-to-PDF and "printing" everything except the ad pages. The page range string for this issue is "-14,16-34,36-". for anyone else interested in cutting them out.

Cogspace

Perfectly happy with the ads. I'm sure they're of help in establishing a more stable revenue stream, and am conveniently interested in these advertisers' fare! As long as you continue to curate them with the same attention as you do the substantive content, I believe they'll continue to provide value to the publication. Also, I'd award you an inspiration die for your handling of the rollout messaging. As always, Mr. Colville & Co., you are a class act. Thank you.

Dawes-tastic

I think the ads were a neat idea and I get where you are coming from with the classic dnd mag vibe, but Arcadia isn’t a classic dnd mag. Sure, it’s inspired by them, but I like Arcadia because it a more curated, cohesively-themed version of those classic magazines and the ads, at least in my opinion, took away from that. I agree with a suggestion someone previously made. Add them at the end of the pdf if people want them around. Still loving Arcadia ads or not, but this feels like a fit of nostalgia taken too far.

Selim0013

I for one am pretty happy with the ads but I can understand why people might not be. Is there a way to do an add free version? Might make it harder to sell the space to people but I know I would still download the ad ones.

DarthPackman

personally the ads get in the way, the art quality & visual mojo change pull me out & i’ve ended up in safari on my ipad for something i don’t give a heck about. really dig Arcadia. not interested in ads. if it’s a must, drop them at the back of the pdf so people can cut them off easily to preserve the integrity of the curated content & art works, please. to echo another comment, i’m subscribed so that i can escape the ad-sphere. i appreciate when artists support those that they’ve collaborated with & appreciate, i just don’t want to be reminded that people want my money at every turn.

jeffrey conway

I really like the ads and hope they stay. The fact that they are curated makes them feel less like an ad and more like something my friends would send me like "check out this cool thing we gotta get". Also its great that MCDM can get more revenue to support everything they do especially if it makes it an easier decision to keep doing Arcadia

JessTheMess

The ads are totally fine by me. Even if they're for something I wouldn't use, sometimes it's neat to just see the kind of ideas people come up with. I might have to make my own inspiration coins (I don't play 5e and I dabble in casting). As others have said, I think this is my favorite cover yet. Y'all do awesome work, MCDM&frens.

RunDMG

Insuring adventurers? In THIS economy?! Those premiums will be outrageous.

RunDMG

Really loving the ads! The inspiration coins are the perfect example of a cool thing I would have never known about otherwise.

Cameron Glascock

Not a fan of ads in a paid product, personally. I have no nostalgia for old gaming magazines to incline me toward them. Will be de-patronning (whatever the proper terminology for that is) until that is no longer a thing.

A Fox

That is an amazing cover. However what if my character needs life insurance in game? Would there an article on that? Or in game ads on that? Mmmm sounds like an interesting Arcadia pitch to me

Roman Penna

These ads are pretty cool. I'm considering buying the inspiration coins.

Luke Vanderwerff

I...I can't believe I'm saying this but... Can we get MORE ads? -BranuMate

BranuMate

The ads are a welcome addition in my opinion. The politics not so much...

Spencer Wright

The ads seem fine to me, cool artwork and neat products. It feels like a real magazine now.

Nick

The ads didn't bother me. I'm kinda shocked to admit that they were fun and interesting

Lojaan

The ads were a little jarring at first. I think they hit a bit differently with a PDF then they do in a physical magazine, but I liked them and am fine with them continuing as long as they are curated. Have skimmed hags and monster components and am already in love with both.

Jerrett H

I want my obligitory life insurance ad 😡

Justin Hudechek

I like the ads for all the reasons you mentioned. I also agree with the poster above who said that one full page color ad is fine and some way to incorporate some smaller more sprinkled options works for me. I'd also like to see some meta stuff like product reviews, cartoons, or interviews. Basically, I want Dragon/Dungeon magazine back! I love what you guys are doing.

David Wallace

The adds rock and I now have a new shop booked marked. Also Wow the amount of content for for harvesting organs blows me away.

Jordan Enda

Awesome as always! I'll say, I wholeheartedly agree that gaming ads were cool as hells! If I were to say something about the way they were used here though, I felt it was a bit jarring... Arcadia feels like more of a Mini-TTRPG book, as opposed to a regular magazine, so it didn't sit quite right with me while reading it. Not opposed to the idea at all, I'd just suggest rethinking the way it's implemented, or to find a way to blend the ads better with the overall design; this time it kinda distracted me from the experience.

Mauricio Rodríguez

You could use an ad blocker on the internet, friend. And if it really bugs you, just run it through Adobe acrobat and remove the ad pages.

DragonTurtleMK1

This cover is absolutelt stunning!

Jakob Joelsson

Personally I disliked the addition of ads. The internet nowdays is oversaturated and I get blasted with kickstarter ads every day, and now there is one less way to escape them. I think it would be best if the ads are at the end of the magazine, so that I can look at them only if I choose to.

Chavdar Chankov

I liked the ads! The one thing that would make them better would be if there was only one full page ad, and then a few half or quarter page ads. I think that would give it even more character.

Lincoln Stoel

For me, as an overseas customer, those adds were a fun way to see a bigger reality, even in their quirky simplicity. I would not say I ever wanted to buy something, but those adds introduced me to gurps and palladium, for example. And while those are not the things I'm into this days, it's still fun.

Gustavo Campanelli

Yeah, I'm pro ads, because it means MCDM gets more $ to pay more ppl to do cool stuff they love - and I don't need to pay any additional $!

Noah Kunin

Very excited for my players to try and harvest things from the green dragon they're currently fighting!

Robin S.C. Griffin

Yet another amazing issue of Arcadia! I love the art. I've already started extrapolating V. J. Harris' rules for harvesting other monsters for my players! Regarding the ads - my initial reaction is that I really do not like them. I especially do not like them in a paid product. I understand the experiment, and I understand at the end of the day it's the MCDM's call on how they want to design their products, but my vote is to keep purchased products ad-free. Thanks again for a dope issue!

Dan S

Another great issue. I'm totally with you guys on the ads. They're a little less immersive when you're scrolling through a PDF than flipping through pages, but as long as they're being curated I'd be glad to keep seeing them. Perfect example being I was not aware Red Dragon Inn was doing an adventure game and now I know to look out for it tomorrow! Neat.

Matthew Sheppard

The cover looks so cool!

Chris Martin

I think the ads are a neat idea, but they definitely don't work as well in pdf form as they do in print. In print it can be cool to see an awesome full page spread ad. However, in pdf form it just feels like those annoying ads that news companies put in the middle of a news story as you scroll down the page.

Jeremy Peterson

I did a combined-pdf on issues 1-8, for 319 pages of awesome. Now, I am off to get it in POD (I love physical books). Good stuff!

Deacon Mike Welker

Holy crap! That monstrous components article is SO GOOD!

Steven Jarvis

As long as the ads are on topic, curated and don't subtract from the content, I'm down.

Wc19

I'll definitely be using that Monstrous Components article almost immediately

Goudawgs

I'm always wary of ads being put into products that didn't have them before, but if anyone is going to curate the quality of their ad content it's you guys.

Kammer

Since feedback was requested on the ad thing, I'll go ahead and throw in that while I really don't like ads, these at least had the grace to be full-page, so I could pretty easily remove them from my copy of the pdf once I'd downloaded it. So yeah, even though I hate ads, and they do change the value proposition of the magazine for me, the unobtrusive format here meant that they weren't close to being an actual deal-breaker.

Jackson Bockus

I honestly love well-done advertisements. You're right - the click-bait trend that has consumed the adsphere is obnoxious and misaligned with what I want as a consumer. I have money to spend, and as long as it's curated by this crew I feel much more comfortable buying from them.

Nuocyte POGO

This issue looks gorgeous as always. Can't wait to really dive into it after work.

Alec Guerin

Worked for me. What happened?

Aaron F West

Is the Color one not working for anyone else?

Celeborn

One James Introcaso... MANY James Introcaso!

Aaron F West

THE James Introcaso, clearly.

Matthew Reed

STAAAAHHHPPPP!!!! You guys are rolling these out so fast, I can't get them in game fast enough! I'm kidding, obviously. I *love* seeing all this amazing new content every time it shows up in my inbox. I'm especially looking forward to using these monstrous components; that's a really fun idea!!

Matthew Reed

I'm good with ads for tabletop stuff

Landon Jamieson

Which James Introcaso?
