Big ol' Longo Final Part: The Avenging Feminine

OK, that is a rough cut of the whole dang thing. This needs a rewrite because I feel I'm not making the main point well enough, and it's what the whole enormous video has been building up to so I need to nail it. Beyond that, same caveats as usual: no titles, rough audio, missing graphics, clips may change.

But we have a rough cut. Holy butts.

If you’d call the public youtube release just ‘Big ol’ Longo’ without any explanation, you’d be my hero.

Lovely. I'm hesitant to say it's the best thing you've done, since the Why Are You So Angry is one of my favorite things ever, but after watching your earlier videos I had to go rewatch Fury Road again to spot all the little things I'd missed before. George Miller is amazing, and you are too. \

So, so, so, so good! Oh wow. I talk about this so often when folks get all down with arguing that women are inherently more compassionate or inherently more loving. Human qualities can be cultivated in any human. Violence is something of which any human is capable. Just as compassion is something of which any human is capable. Excited to see the finished product!!!

That, and the bit about gendering of violence being cultural, and "with enough explosions [&c.], maybe that can change". For some reason, that connects in my head with the "action movies are about solving problems with violence" thing and makes this video about one movie feel like it reaches out and touches on broader questions like "are women allowed to serve in combat positions in the military" and all those other things that the same cultural stuff is about.

I had a busy summer and didn’t pay attention to your ongoing posts. Having just watched this Big ‘ol Longo queued up into one playlist on a big screen… WOW! This is undoubtedly one of your best works. So thoroughly researched examples of female action hero tropes — but more importantly — so impeccably illustrated with examples from other movies, highlights the masterwork of Fury Road in a way I didn’t realize before. It is a highly regarded movie and many thoughtful essays did it great service, but this! Your reading of the text through righteous feminist lens is truly special! Thank you Ian, can’t wait to see it in public. Well worth the wait.

fantastic. This last part wraps it all up very nicely. it's gonna come together really well i feel. great work, ian!

Excellent ending point, I think. Looking forward to watching it again all together. Since you said you wanted to rewrite it, I would say for me the strongest sentence in the whole thing is that violence isn't something women weren't given, but rather a right that Joe took away from them (Paraphrased). I don't know if that should be the end end, because i like the stuff after it too? But that's your strongest beat for me.

AV

Oooh boy what an ending <3

SulaMoon

...yeah, that conclusion is going to be sticking with me for a while.

Yes, I know. I record temp audio real quick and make a ton of marble-mouthed mistakes.

This thumbnail is funny. With the barrel across his mouth (and his expression) it briefly looks like he's back in the mask.

At 2:00, I think you meant to say “female characters” not “male characters”
