Update: No Ads
Added 2017-09-30 15:19:38 +0000 UTCHey team,
After a very scattered couple days, with everyone from Jack Conte to Hank Green showing up in my mentions and having fielded six interview requests (and counting) - because apparently I broke this story??? - I have been approved for the YouTube Partners Program and have seen how the settings actually work in practice. And I can keep the ads turned off.
While the new policy takes away your Patreon links unless you join the program, and requires you to have 10k total channel views and to get approved by a very ambiguous process, this only means you are eligible for monetization. It does not require you to activate monetization.
In classic YouTube fashion, none of this is clear from the outset, YT's only announcements have been vague and noncommital responses to public confusion, and it took me two days before I got approved and could determine anything. I still don't know what the long-term effects might be, if this means my channel will be under more scrutiny or if it will increase my risk of copyright strikes, but, regardless: I do not have to turn on any ads so, for the time being, I won't.
Thanks for bearing with me during these confusing times.

...wow, A+ job, YouTube, much congratulations. Here's hoping you don't end up with the copyright strike issues.
