My parents took us kids to see this in the theater when it came out, I had not heard of it and I was pissed they were making me go see a "girly movie" as the title and poster made me think. I went in kicking and screaming, when it was over I think i enjoyed it more than my entire family., It's still one of my all time favorite movies, by high school my best friend and I had seen this so much that we'd put it on (VHS) mute it and do the entire dialogue with accents and everything ha. We still rhyme when we talk sometimes like Inigo and Fezzik. :)

2024-09-28 23:40:52 +0000 UTCIt's a travesty that you haven't seen this, lol. But this is honestly my favorite movie. Everything is done so unbelievably well. The casting is perfect, the characters are all memorable, even if they are in just one scene, the villains are great, it's so funny and I love the music and how they use it to react sounds, like Inigo trying to bust through the door, the fencing scenes and the final showdown between him and Rugan. The writing in this is some of the best but even then if it wasn't for the performances it wouldn't have been as good. Like when Inigo is talking to Wesley about his father, that could have just been a huge exposition dump but it's performed and spoken so national that it doesn't feel like it. I don't think people give Cary Elwes enough credit for his physical comedy in this, the way he moves his body after he comes back to life is so good, it really looks like he's numb, lol. And Mandy Patinkin was perfect in this, love his story! There are several fun facts that I need to share! So, the fencing was completely done by the actors expect for the flipping parts, they trained for months. In fact their instructor also worked on Star Wars and The Mask Of Zorro. Cary Elwes broke his ankle during production and during the scenes with Buttercup on the hill you'll notice he will sit or lean against something and that was to take pressure off it, you can really see it during the wide shot of them running into the fireswamp. He also told Christopher Guest to hit him for real on top of his head and he did, it actually really knocked him out and he got a concussion and that's the shot they used for the film. During filming it would get really cold and Andre would just simply put his entire hand on top of her head, which covered it completely and it kept Robin Wright warm. Andre also said this was the best time he had because he didn't feel out of place or an outcast, which is sweet and sad at the same time. And last, before getting the role Mandy Patinkin just lost his father to cancer, so that last battle with Rugan he was really channeling it and when he said that famous line he was actually speaking to the cancer.

Also at some point afterwards in the early 90s when the Internet was starting, someone transcribed the ENTIRE movie and posted it online. One of the top quotable movies of the era, a Gen X classic, and I had a major crush on Cary Elwes
