Nice to hear that you got some of your pictures back! If most of your 500 GB are apps than the 50 GB should be enough for you, but if you mainly use your memory for Videos and Photos than you probably need more space. There are some different ways to backup your storage without using iCloud. You could use a Network attached storage to automatically transfer your Videos/Pictures for example but the easiest way would be to use iCloud.. Just make sure you made the right adjustments and activated the transfer of your Images. You don't want to lose your memories again.

I learned my lesson and now bought a cloud subscription that has 50gb. I really should of had everything saved to the cloud before. But yeah when I logged into my iTunes it did save some cloud data

I tried the update and it gave me an error code. My iCloud did have a decent amount of old photos saved though from December 2018-October 2019 which wasn’t so bad

Here is the official solution to this problem. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201412 There are some unofficial tools you could try but I recommend trying this first. Edit: Read your "Update". Sorry for being this late, but there where still many things you could have tried before making a "factory reset".. Do you remember if you where logged in to iCloud? It's hard to not activate it if you configure a new iPhone because you can use the same login as for the App Store. So check the Settings. iCloud normally backups your phone every day. Even the free plan (5GB) should be enough to restore all your Apps including saves since apps are only saved as a reference. (Excluding images/Videos..) I'm not sure if you made the right configurations but you can check at least. (iCloud -> iCloud-Backup -> Last successful Backup)

If you choose the update option it won't erase but if you choose the restore option it will. Update is the last ditch option you can take.

Happened to me before once.if a hard reset doesn’t work, start iTunes connect your phone to the computer, hold the power and volume down button until you go into recovery mode, then you’ll get a prompt on iTunes then you can choose to reinstall iOS or restore it if you’ve already made a backup.

Well it is the xS plus so it has a nice camera. switched because it had better quality than my camera and 500gb of memory. I never had issues with it

Try to connecting it to your MacBook via iTunes and see if you can still see the files .

You might have to put it in recovery mode then restore iOS “Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, don't release them when you see the Apple logo, keep holding the buttons down until you see the recovery mode screen.
