She sent an assistant (the one who tells the couple in episode 13 where Ed and Al were) to the island, as well, disguised as a "monster". He made the month they spent there even more terrible (fighting them and stealing their food), as it was ordered by Izumi, to test their determination. But also, of course, to keep an eye on them, in case things went really bad quickly. And I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this, but you just gotta love how perfect the Elric brothers and the Curtis couple are for each other. The Curtis are the parents they lost, and needed, and they are the children the Curtis wanted, but could never have.

There must be something in the human psyche that unlocks when witnessing birth. I never understood the big deal behind it until I saw my sister giving birth. Miracle really is a good word for it.
