Seeing how we'll be losing HxH soon, I recommend Perfect Blue by Madhouse. It's a psychological thriller that is gorgeously animated, beautifully composed, and with an amazing soundtrack. It does get very very gritty and dirty however and might make you very uncomfortable at some moments but that is the purpose of how it's trying to convey its themes. Definitely worth the watch

Mamoru Hosoda's work can be quite fun (he did One Piece Movie 6), so maybe put those in too. Masaaki Yuasa's "Night is Short, Walk On Girl" & "Lu Over the Wall" may come off as weird, the former especially, but it's far from pretentious and incoherent, so consider those as well.
