When a devil fruit user dies their power goes into the closest regular fruit, like what happened with Smiley. I think Blackbeard had a fruit with him or his crew to "catch" Whitebeard's power then used some secret to allow Blackbeard to eat it without dying.

I can't believe you "eww"-ed at spanish paella LOL. it's SOOOOOOOO good even if you're not a fan of seafood. parsley, garlic, saffron, shrimp, chicken thigh, spanish chorizo sausage, prosciutto/cured ham, onions, peppers, paprika, mussel clams, lemon juice and quartered wedges, all tossed in short grain rice. don't knock it till you try it!

So, in Punk Hazard you saw Smiley die and his devil fruit relocate to an apple nearby. In One Piece, there can only exist one of each fruit at a time. So, for example when Luffy or Robin (etc.) dies in the far, far future their specific devil fruit will respawn somewhere in the world (most likely in a normal fruit nearby).

Ace's Mera Mera no Mi simply transferred to a normal fruit after Ace died and Mingo got it at some point during those 2 years. He might've just gotten it. We still don't know how BB and his crew steal DFs after the user dies. JoJo/Bleach tomorrow, right?
