SMF I don't know if you noticed, but when Otohime returned she had that paper with her, and mentioned that she'd calmed down the Tenryuubito and actually convinced one to support her petition to let Fishmen live on the surface. So while they're vile and disgusting for the most part, it at least shows they're not all pure evil. You're definitely right about them being some of the worst behaving people in the entire series though.

I feel like this arc is even more relevant this days, with all the shit that's happening over the world with the refugees and religion. It really shows how both sides answering with anger just make the problem worse. Why won't people understand that more anger will only bring pain. We have to try to understand each other, it's the only way

ok, there are details that are you miss. this is not about ternyubito and the slaves, but how the human community saw the fishmen and discriminate them although not extreme like slaves. It's become so depressing when you see all human see scare and look down on you.

Bit of a RANT ahead: OK, so, I find the ideology of this arc very confusing. Yes, there was discrimination on both sides, but, for all intents and purposes, it's equal discrimination. The humans had no special rights over the fishmen. The Fishmen were not barred from living on the surface, they chose not to. The sun pirates were only chased down by the navy, because they were pirates that broke the law, not because they were fishmen. As for the Tenryuubito, it's wrong to lump them in with humans. They view humans just as much below them as fishmen. They took just as many human slaves as fishmen slaves. That has nothing to do with humans and everything to do with a government and class issue. However, I can understand the resentment from those that stayed on fishmen island and didn't get to see humans, but, Tiger's resentment makes ZERO sense to me. He saw human slaves around him with his own eyes. Tiger equating humans to the Tenryuubito after this makes no sense. Either Tiger is extremely unintelligent, or this is just bad writing.

For the most part, post time skip One Piece backstories has been very good, but his present day story telling has been mixed. The issues Oda raise for this arc are fine. It just that his execution of the idea wasn't as great for a certain character and maybe even overall. Since you can find this topic easily in Hollywood movies and tv shows, the standard is usually higher for it. Skypiea is an arc that was more for people who like the more adventure side of One Piece.

Fishman island is a good arc just like skypiea. People just can’t appreciate good story telling and the struggles of the fishmen is relatable to many in real life.
