The Yonkou (4 Emperors), each are a world power comparable to the world government (Marines , Chiper Pol, and the Warlords). The Yonkou exist because there is no Pirate King, they are the 4 strongest Pirates in the One Piece world. So far we know "Red-Haired" Shanks of being one of the Yonkou and if you recall Ace told Luffy about the Pirate "Whitebeard" whose another one of these Yonkou.

With these episodes you can already see how strong Shanks is. He is part of the four emperors (Yonkou´), a power that made the World Government create the shichibukai in order to keep them in check, so that their powers even out (WG+ Shichibukai = Yonkou). By the way, if you can, update the King of the Pirates and above tier because there are a few new people in there, myself included, thanks :)

A lot of heartfelt moments in these episodes and quite the info bomb about a few things in the OP world. The revolutionary army, the new world, the 4 emperors of which two being Shanks and Whitebeard confirmed so far AND Luffy's family. Exciting stuff! By the way Aokiji is pronounced Ow-ki-ji. I think you see why this arc is overall beloved by OP fans now.
