The Fanzel stuff is interesting because its technically Canon Filler. It did not happen in the manga. Fanzel just showed up and they gave like a 2 page summary of what happened. But he is from a Black Clover light novel that is canon but didnt make it into the manga. If I had to guess Id assume the editors wanted him to get to the Magic Knight stuff faster and an extra few chapters before Asta and Yuno left Hage couldve slowed down the pacing in a very important time for a new series. So it made it into the novel. So when the manga was coming out all of us readers who didnt know about the light novel just went "who the hell is this guy"

2023-06-16 02:42:00 +0000 UTCSo glad you felt it too. Your reaction reminded me of how I felt when I first saw these episodes, especially 54. That was the first BC episode to make me legit cry and I was way more invested in all the characters after that. This is one of my favorite series and I loved it from the beginning but it felt like a turning point. I'm really looking forward to your reactions for the next two episodes and the rest of this arc! I really enjoyed all of the arcs but this one is Top 3 for me.
