Act 28

Mel

After Mel had dropped off the wallet at the lost-and-found, got himself plenty of groceries and purchased several pieces of shapewear and even a corset, he returned to his room.

He put on several of the tight pants with mediocre effect, ate a bunch of quick snacks and proceeded to train his newly acquired skills.

While he repeated everything he learned so far times and times again, Lucifer - this time actually talking to him in its small snake form - provided him with some additional concept coaching.

“So, my little human, what’s your concept here. Your business plan. Tell me about it.”

“I don’t have any,” Mel answered while making a portal that was slightly bigger than usual. He wasn’t sure if he was getting the hang of it, or if his powers were growing.

“Excuse me?”

From the corner of his eye, Mel could see the snake staring at him with wide, unbelieving eyes.

“Lucifer. You snatched me off a roof right before I tried to end things. Do you really think I have a five-year plan or anything like that?”

Another portal opened and closed, the biggest one yet.
The white serpent demon gave a tiny, almost cute sounding cough. It seemed to be taken aback.

“Alright, fair. Then tell me about yer brand. What’s the thing that makes ya special?”

“Magic?”

Lucifer moaned loudly.

“Oh, sweet, naive, summer child. I swear, you only survived for this long because of your looks, because you have less clue than I have legs. Okay then. I see that we need to start at the very beginning. I’ll tell ya what we have to do for the next few months, so listen up closely, baby boy.”

Mel took a break from training, fetched his lukewarm cup of tea and sat down on a chair next to the window. Sitting down with such restraining clothing was unpleasant and forced him to breathe shallowly, but it was still better than constantly seeing his gut sticking out like a potbelly on the bottom of his vision.

With unnatural swiftness the serpent slid up his leg and got itself cozy on his lap. Its beady cherry red eyes looked at him, giving Mel its full attention.

“You won’t survive too long with this money, right? So we have to think of this issue first. I suggest we make a casino plan - unsuspicious wins in several ones, not one big cue f’course - then, for yer poor innocent soul’s sake - go over to make money off magic shows quickly.

For that you’ll need a brand. Something that makes you unique. In style, aesthetic, performance and character. I’m sure we’ll think of something quickly, you’re pretty odd to begin with.”

A conflicting mix of offensiveness and esteem arose upon those words within Mel.

“Then we need to rent yer a place,” the demon continued, “Somethin’ lofty would be lit, with much space, so that you can build contraptions and shit there and store them.

If you have a couple of solid performance concepts, you’ll need an agent. One that can take care of such a lost cause like you, mind’cha. This part will be tricky. Because you’ll need to tell them about me, if you don’t want to live an extremely stressful hide’n’seek style of life. If they go crazy, I’ll have to kill them - yeah yeah, I know, don’t look at me like the abandoned puppy that you are, we’ll try to avoid that - so we have to make sure to find somebody who cares more about money than morals. Somebody who gives a shit ‘bout how you perform, or how you use magic, as long as you bring in the big bucks. Shouldn’t be too hard to find a POS like that.

After that, everything will go smoothly and both money and fame will multiply on its own. Sound good?”

Mel huffed, impressed. “It sounds like you have done this before, many times, to be frank. So, yes. Sounds good to me.”

“I haven’t, I just have more than two brain cells, Melchior. So, for now, you use the rest of the day for training, and tomorrow we’ll start to work on your brand. Chop-chop!”
