It's a barrier to anyone that doesn't have easy access to a dmv and several hours of free time to take off work to pick one up, and extends to other types of Voter suppression. For example in areas with a statistically higher level of minorities the nearest dmv will only be open a few hours one day a week and require a car to reach from the most populated neighborhoods. If you don't know someone who can drive you there during 1-3pm on a Monday then you can't get a 'valid ID' made. But odds are you know all that if you're trying that argument thinking I haven't seen it made before.

That said, the moment states with a history of disenfranchising minority voters were no longer required to certify their voting laws before enacting them, they started passing voting laws that predominantly made it harder for minorities to vote. Call it what you will.

2023-01-22 06:34:46 +0000 UTCThe saddest part of Selma (2014) is that the conservatives on the Supreme Court effectively revoked/eliminated the useful provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 that the film portrays as the ultimate solution to voting rights back in 2013, right before this movie came out. Lately modern Republicans are even making arguments for what would be considered poll taxes and other barriers these days because the law preventing that kind of discrimination that they fought so hard for in this film was so thoroughly gutted. Voter ID laws are also a highly effective workaround for the remaining provisions of the act currently used by many states as minority vote suppression tools. Some people will likely be upset that I'm pointing these facts out but they should consider doing some research on the matter and apply critical thinking skills.

As a high school tudent I attended a segrated school and college student I got my first exposure to people of different races, sexual orientation and religions. We really needed Dr. King.

For a few years the federal government kept troops in southern states to keep things from going back to the way they were. During this time the first black men were voted into federal, state, and local offices. This did not make the white citizens happy and there were lynchings and riots to try to preserve white supremacy. When the federal troops were moved to the frontier, the southern states were able to put laws in place to keep black men from voting based on many arbitrary hurdles. 40ish years later women got the Right to Vote and 40ish years after we had this. Then almost 50 years after The Voting Rights Act Passed it was gutted to allow states to once again make it more difficult for people they do not like to vote.
