EXCLUSIVE REACTION: Julie And The Phantoms 1x09

Comments

Let's Pop into this episode!💜

Kristina Fagan

Thank you for this reaction! I am 32 and, like Benji, have an unhealthy obsession with HSM. But this show came at one of the lowest times and brought back so much joy and love for Kenny Ortega directed musicals. It's so fun to see your reactions, joy, and to cry along with you both (I lost my mom when I was 15, so I'm on the dead mom train), but seeing other people enjoy a show that maybe wasn't made for us still enjoy it makes me happy too.

ARCANE OR FLEABAG

And after Ted Lasso there is a show Shrinking from similar creators I think? I do not know, but Shrinking is really good show but maybe trigering since it is lot about grief and how to deal that.

I love this show so much and I am so glad you reacted to it. Thanks for giving me an excuse to re-watch the whole thing! The part I was most interested in seeing more about in a season 2 was Bobby's story. How he reacted when seeing them perform was so powerful to me and I really wanted to know what he was going to do next and how he was going to reconcile what happened in the past with what was going on with the Phantoms now.

I agree completely. Imagine being 17 again---I kind of pictured this scenario where Bobby brags to the girl that he's trying to impress that he writes a lot of the band's songs--and then after his friends die Rose finds some of their work and encourages him to submit it--and it all kind of gets away from him before he can really stop it.

That ending is exactly why there is SO MUCH fanfic on this show. ;) But in all seriousness, like you pointed out after Ep 8, cheesiness of some of the acting and writing aside, there's an astonishing amount of depth for a show that's less than five hours long in its entirety. It deals with early death, homophobia, the loss of a parent, a spouse, a child (an only child at that,) contemplating our own possible nonexistence, the uncertainty of freedom vs security at the cost of slavery, and even the perspective of the "mean girl"--effort and hard work vs raw talent. And the music is several cuts above the kind of stuff we usually see in similar series. It really has something for everyone.

I have never thought about Bobby that much but I think you are right, it si very interesting take and I think it could be true. He could have interesting storyline in season 2 if these idiots would renew it.

Great reaction as always. If you guys somehow didn’t watch Ted Lasso, those would be good reactions. Such a top tier show.

Show recommendation from me are Sense8 or A Discovery of Witches! I think you will love both!

I don't think Bobby (the fourth member of Sunset Curve) gets enough benefit of the doubt~ He was also a teenager that night~~~ The guilt he must've felt when he hanged back to flirt with a girl instead of going out with them while they got their hot dogs (he might've been able to get them help sooner had he been with them). Like imagine him going to look for them only to be confronted with ambulances... And the general fan accepted theory is that Julie's mother is Rose from the opening of the show, and that she and Bobby bonded that night. Rose is probably the one that helped Bobby get back into music (her Sunset Curve shirt is decorated when they find it in the trunk; it wasn't when the boys gave it to her). And Julie says her and Carrie grew up friends, with Julie's mother always playing "Trevor"s music. [And Bobby is probably how Rose got the studio/garage & house, and why she didn't throw out the old instruments or clothes; she probably hoped one day Bobby would come get them...] [I also assumed, based on the way Luke first speaks about their families in ep 2, Bobby probably didn't want any money from their music to go to families he probably thought didn't care about his friends~ Mind you, he released a song called "My Name is Luke" and Luke's parents didn't keep up with the one remaining living friend of Luke's to hear it and think "oh! I bet our son wrote that song! maybe he wrote others?"] P.S I think it's noteworthy that Carrie's mother is never mentioned; imo it's probably important...

[Also, reminder that Kenny ~loves~ a slow-burn & doesn't like his characters to kiss too early. He did also mention that there were plans for Willie and Alex to have a song, if the show continued^.^ Which would've been more imo; an original gay duet on a teen targeted show?!~~~]

Barbara Carter

Spoilers!!!! just in case there is EVER a s2: I believe Kenny said once at a convention, had the show gotten more seasons, his plan was to have one of the phantoms crossover, one would choose to stay a ghost, and one would get a come back~ I feel it's kinda obvious Luke would be the one brought back, but it was maybe a toss up if Alex or Reggie would be the one to crossover. Both have family issues that needed resolving. Alex was the one most interested in crossing over but Willie was all about staying a ghost (and part of Alex's story was probably finally getting to have a gay relationship; though, the actors for Luke and Alex have, I believe, promoted the idea that they think Luke and Alex might've had something more once upon a time~~~), and Reggie was the one reluctant to crossover because he afraid to leave the other two and Julie & Julie's family~~~

Barbara Carter

And the show ends right after they hug... can't convince me otherwise

Erika Bojarski

I believe each of the Phantoms got to create their solo in Nothin to Lose~ The behind the scenes for this show is fascinating (and there's a lot of it!), cause you really see how much Kenny trusted the actors to put in their own two cents; it was hugely collaborative^.^

Barbara Carter

When you next choose a show could the Marvelous Mrs maisel be one to consider?
