What are some of your Favorite LGBTQIA+ Films? (NO REQUESTS PLEASE)

In the meantime, I wanted to give our Patrons a chance to share their favorite films to watch for PRIDE Month. One of my recent underrated discoveries is the 2020 film, "Straight Up" written by and directed by AND STARRING James Sweeney as a Queer man with OCD living in LA, struggling in MLM relationships only to find himself connected with Katie Findlay (who is NOT the ugly stepsister from "A Cinderella Story" SMH) who shares his eccentric sense of humor. Imagine Gilmore Girls meets Wes Anderson and you have a pretty good idea of this hidden gem. One of my favorites and can currently be streamed ON NETFLIX in the US. 2022-06-19 02:06:43 +0000 UTCIf you haven't seen the documentary "Flee", it's an excellent film about a refugee escaping the Taliban. It's also a moving LGBTQ+ story. It's like watching an animated drama and I completely forgot that I was watching a documentary. It was nominated for a bunch of awards last year, including three Oscars (Animated, Documentary, International).

It’s about a trans girl from a small town who strikes up a friendship with a rich cisgender girl who is engaged to a guy in the military and their relationship turns into something more. Meanwhile her hetero best friend (played by Michael Welch aka mike from twilight) has been secretly in love with her and it’s really sweet and cute and not very problematic except when it has to be (again the setting is small town America).

It is based on novel by EM Forster and I would say ahead of its time with giving their gay protagonists a happy ending. same-sex relationships were still criminalized so he never tried to get it published during his lifetime. And yeah, kind of a lens into attitudes of the time! And also up there I'd say Hedwig and the Angry Inch - I see the character as non-binary tho at the time that lexicon wasn't around (director now says the same thing). there's also this untangling of sexuality and gender the main char has to do- I dunno, best that I can describe it!

Fried Green Tomatoes, Shelter, Latter Days, Kiss the Bride, Chicken Tikka Masala, The Wedding Banquet, Pricilla Queen of the Desert, History Boys, The Perfect Wedding, Fire Island, Make the Yuletide Gay and a dozen other gay themed holiday movies. and a little movie called Broadway Damage. The actors try hard and the intention was sweet, but it is not very good .

It’s about a man who leaves his wife and son for another man, his psychiatrist who married his ex-wife and the lesbians from next door who are the godparents of his son. Incredibly flawed people who try to be one big happy family while planning a bar mitzvah. Okay, your description of Straight Up convinced me to watch it.

Unfortunately they made the movie in the time of No Homo Hollywood so they wouldn't let there be any actual physical intimacy, but I adore the story nonetheless. I'm trying to read the book which does have them be out and about lesbians but I can't get through it because it is Southern Cooking Porn and I can't get through a chapter without needing to go get cornbread, barbecue, buttered green beans, and a steaming heap of gravy smothered mashed potatoes.

2022-06-12 05:36:30 +0000 UTCIt was incredibly wholesome and that was such a welcomed breath of fresh air. I honestly think Straight Up fits in that category too! It has some drama and “tragedy” - but nothing more than your usual rom-com!

2022-06-12 05:28:58 +0000 UTCI enjoyed Straight Up a lot. I loved the bond those two had. I think it reminds us how we're all looking for that instant connection. Tbh though, Heartstopper has been the only LGBTQ+ anything to make my heart melt. Not only did I fall in love with the characters but I liked how wholesome the show was. It didn't have to be rooted in tragedy like most LGBTQ+ stories. I liked how we got to follow Nick discover his natural feelings for a boy. Nick just wanted to be around Charlie all the time and how can that be wrong when it's so right!? 💕

It explores a variety of different sexualities and relationships as well as featuring characters (and actors) on the spectrum.
