The thing with not drinking the blood of the dead. In Queen of the Damned it's described as the last drop I believe. You can't consume the last of the blood as the body dies and you can't consume anything that comes from a dead body. Anything else is fair game. This is my best understanding as I have only seen the movie once and I'm just staring the book series

Much of the book series involves characters trying to reconcile their faith (or lack of) with their new reality as non-humans and trying to figure out "what it all means".
