2025-02-19 00:59:37 +0000 UTCThis is definitely in an odd way one of the best Anne Rice adaptations this far in terms of the characters personalities. They definitely changed quite a bit from the books but I'm not mad about it at all, this is one of my favorite vampire shoes. Right up there with Buffy and Supernatural ( there's vampires in it so it counts lol)

2025-02-16 23:57:27 +0000 UTCI like vampires and vampire lore but I agree with Rizzo that it can easily be very poorly written and leave itself open to plot holes. I think it depends on the piece and the tone though, like I'll let certain things go in something like Buffy (which is not to say it's poorly written but certain things to do with vampires are inconsistent/make little sense/aren't explained) but I think in something that had a much darker and serious tone, like this for example, I'd be more critical if the lore made little/no sense. In regards lore, in Dracula just getting bitten by a vampire turned you into one, you don't have to drink one's blood (you also had to die and rise again). There is a scene where he makes a victim drink his blood but it was actually apparently Anne Rice who popularised the idea of drinking the vampire's blood to become a vampire. Both books are heavily queercoded (Bram Stoker who wrote Dracula was a closeted gay man and many believe Dracula was based on Oscar Wilde) and blood drinking is clear stand in for sex so I've always presumed that drinking from the vampire was as well as him drinking from you was based in giving and receiving. A lot of the other stuff you mention, stakes, crosses etc I believe come from folklore when people actually believed in vampirism and would exhume bodies to kill that vampire. Though I again agree that it doesn't excuse shoddy writing, just because something comes from real life folklore doesn't mean you don't have to make it make sense in universe!

I think it's mostly tradition now but it used to be, at least in part, because we didn't embalm bodies so you didn't have much time to bury them. π¬ I imagine this was a day or two after his death for the same reason tbh.

Writer's (Especially Anne Rice R.I.P.) have every right to make their own story out of any ancient myth. In this you saw how a vampire is made. They are drained to the point of death and then drink their maker's blood to replenish their own thus converting their own composition and makeup to vampirism. (The same in True Blood) This also makes their blood a variant of their makers'. They then after their blood is replenished with vampire blood, DIE. After a quite painful, but quick death they come out of it like quickly passing out (they also may shit/piss themselves and vomit due to their human death) and afterwards feel quite high due to their new high-octane blood. It is not an analogy for sex, it's an analogy of immortality, power, rebirth and strength. ALSO they have psionic abilities. This is mostly based on how close your vampire lineage is to the source (Akasha). And Lestat is VERY close. His maker was made by someone made by Akasha. And then... (NO SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT)

2024-07-31 18:10:32 +0000 UTCThere are different variations and lores to vampires. Just like with werewolves and zombies. The zombies in the walking dead are not the same like the ones in the last of us. The werewolves in the originals/vampire diaries were not like the werewolves like twilight. In midnight mass their vampire was not a typical one and had its own qualities just like the twilight vampires or the vampires in vampire diaries (which had hybrids and etc.). I think itβs cool when people take different perspectives to super natural creatures and makes them unique. Itβs not always cut in stone otherwise vampire shows/movies would get tiring if it was always the same lore. The whole garlic and stake thing is a human superstition meant be used as a weapon against vampires to ward them away or to reveal a vampire. Because vampires are suppose to hate the smell/taste of garlic and the wooden stakes to the heart will βkill themβ. Hope that makes sense!

2024-07-31 18:08:58 +0000 UTCYou can't lump all vampire media together. The spectrum of work-specific explanations is just too broad for that because of the sheer amount of it. It makes a much stronger point to critique a specific piece like Jenny Nicholson's amazing Vampire Diaries video, because yes, that lore IS stupid! And zombies aren't consistent across stories at all- some zombies are fast, some are slow, some are smart, and some are dumb! Find the vampire thing with the rules that infuriate you the most then we can all get aboard the rant train =D Can't wait to see how y'all feel as the lore gets more filled in for this universe!
