Rent or forfeit 5

Tommy looked down at his legs clad in stretchy thick material, poking out from beneath a pair of Monica’s satin shorts, the hoody he wore also belonging to her. 

Having brought only a few items of clothing with him, when he moved in, he had worn every item he owned until they stunk. They now lay in a plastic bag by the front door ready to be washed, after Sarah had threatened to burn them if he wore the filthy clothes on her new sofa one more time.

With no washing machine in the apartment and not wanting to go out to the nearby launderettes, forced to dress as he was, Tommy had started wearing his sisters' hoodies and jumpers that were unisex in look. So thinking it wouldn’t be much of a change, and not wanting to have to carry around one of his sisters’ little handbags everywhere he went, chose option one, to the surprise of Sarah and Monica sat beside him, who even asked him if he was sure.

Tommy didn't change his mind and was right in thinking not much would change as over the next week he borrowed his sister’s tops not really noticing much of a difference from his own clothes. In fact, without ever admitting it, he actually preferred them. The material was softer compared to his own old T-shirts and hoodies, and in most cases much warmer too.

The one thing he hadn’t bargained for though, was losing his favourite pair of converses. He had tried to argue that they were unisex, but his sisters weren’t having any of it.

Knowing he was fighting a losing battle, he had reluctantly handed them over, they were now missing, along with the bag of dirty clothes that had once sat by the door.

For a day he didn't wear any shoes around the apartment but on the second day, he caved in and put on a pair of Sarah's shoes. It was the middle of winter and the apartment was insulated poorly, it was just too cold to walk around, with only the thin material of his tights between the bottom of his feet and the cold apartment floors. 

His sisters told him to borrow whatever he wanted, so with no intention of wearing anything with a heel, he was limited to a few pairs of boots and shoes, which he had no choice but to wear, to keep his feet from freezing. 

After a week of feeling sorry for himself and with still no luck finding a source of income, it was time for yet another forfeit, and this time the choices were the worst yet.

1) Dye your hair blonde.

2) Get a spray tan.
