For the first part, I focused the most on the lighting situation, with that light pocket being cast on the pirate's hand and thigh. I also experimented a bit with the process, initially laying temperatures in with a big soft brush and painting over that with a more textured brush.
After that I just did a quick line drawing of the figure, focusing mostly on the form of the folds and the costume.
When doing studies, it's a great practice to have a very concise motive for it - very often your reason/the subject you're studying determines your process/technique.
