Jacek, strange as this may sound to some, money is not always the most important driver in this context. Tefler has a young child and family obligations during the summer months that don't necessarily exist the rest of the year. Spending a beautiful summer day with your child = priceless. Hopefully, all is well and he'll get it done soon, but it's certainly not the most important thing in Tefler's life to do so. Important, yes, but not the most important.

it's strange though. It's pay per chapter system, so if Tefler releases before the 14th of each month, it allows to release two chapters a month (or half chapters). This way he gets two contributions a month. if it's released too late, he gets only one.

Dread the thought. Tefler's chapters are like novelettes. The thought of waiting a year for each one is horrifying.

So what is SOL ? I found Tefler on KU after the third book went to see if he had a patron account and after reading a ton of posts found literotica and read all the stuff I missed. I pay E William Brown 5 dollars a month so I decided Tefler needed the same from my point of view. Just didn't think 2 dollars was enough.

What would we do if this was like any other novel, where we had to wait a year between stories. I for one would lose my mind waiting.

Stop-loss - particularly in times of war aside, If Jack for example is having a crisis of faith he could be a liability to his ship, crew or brothers-in-arms and therefore any operation he is involved in. The responsible move is to keep his experience and knowledge but place him into positions where he can make the most impact without exposing him to tension. Border patrols, convoy escort, training all are possible. What I think is possible is Jack will get a dose of John, Calara and Alyssa and see the bigger picture and resolve any inner conflict we are currently projecting on him.... and yes there is mother Maria as well who might just sort out her man

@Chaucer - you are absolutely correct about stop-loss. In fact, they can also involuntarily extend someone who has enlisted for a set period of time (which is about to run out) too. I was in the USAF for almost 14 years and when I decided to get out 6yrs short of retirement to run our family business, I was denied outprocessing until the very last two weeks because of military operations that depended on my specialized knowledge. Believe me, @Beowulf, they can draft you in a war, and they can keep you during peace, too. In the scenario Tefler has created here, NOBODY is going as anywhere.. guaranteed. In fact, if they don't implement a draft, considering their losses during the battle of Terra, I would be very surprised!

Three of the soldiers seem to be glowing red, and Alyssa turns towards them, a frown starting to form upon her face... Jade - The marines look aghast at the rent and melted edges of the hole that she left behind her, trying to figure out how to follow after... Sakura - "This won't take long. Done. I'm going to the next ship, now." Dana - "Let's get th... oh, now that is interesti... oh, sparkly!" Rachel - As the giant Reaper Cannon floating above her head continually swivels, targeting and firing against any potential threat to Dana's girlfriend, Rachel says, "You don't need to be afraid. I'm here to help." Calara - Concentrating intently, she peels a banana and throws the peel ahead of the troops through an open door. A moment later, there is a huge crash, then another, then another, then another and another and.... "It's all in the wrist." I'll stop here. I'm laughing too hard.

Forgive me if this has been discussed already. It has been a really hectic couple of weeks and I am way behind is reading through all the posts. I have a question and some thoughts about strategy for how the Kirrixx battle could go. I am assuming the Invictus crew will run some active scans once in range of the Kirrixx fleet. Now IF, the scans show that their are hostages already aboard the Kirrixx ships. Then boarding actions will be required. ( I really hope it goes this way ). Will John’s strategy be, to clear one ship at a time. And risk the Kirrixx killing the other hostages. Or will he split up and let each other the girls lead a group of Terran marines to hit more ships simultaneously. Wouldn’t it be awsome to see Alyssa, Sakura, Tashana and Irillith. Get some center stage spotlight time as they blast their way spearheading the charge through the bug ranks to save helpless, hopeless captives. What an efficient, effective way to bring as much force as possible to bear. Plus gain even more notoriety for the girls.

If he was injured badly enough, he might not have been in any shape to come for her, particularly since he had cut himself off from his own Thralls thus removing that source of psychic energy that he could have used for healing. By releasing Valada, he not only saved her, he also released the Maliri so that they could be later claimed by John. Or perhaps, he released the Maliri to John when John was born, unbeknownst to John? Who knows? Oh yes, OTK!

I do not believe that the Progenitor that John's mother found on Acadia is Larn'kelnar for the very simple reason that his Matriarch has been his Matriarch for several thousand years. If she was with him on Acadia, and that ship was crashed there some 10K years ago, then she would have been his Matriarch for far longer. Also, why would he still have been on Acadia?

Ranagon is the name that the Trankarans gave to the second progenitor, it sounds nothing like MN or LK. What if Ranagon=LK, and the family reunion includes John's mother??

If one of the secondary weapons of a Progenitor vessel is a Quantum Flux Cannon sufficient to induce quantum flux within its target (and ignoring conventional shielding, insofar as we can discern) and sufficiently destructive to destroy worlds all on its own, then what might the primary weapons of a Progenitor vessel be? Now, having decided upon the awesome power of a Progenitor vessel's primary weapon, keep in mind that the armour of a Progenitor vessel is such that Mael'nerak knew that even the primary weapons of his vessel would not be sufficient to destroy Ranagon's vessel, thus necessitating the self-sacrificing manoeuvre that resulted in rifts in space-time that destroyed an entire solar system and rendered it extremely dangerous even to this day 10,000 years later. Now, finally, keep in mind that insofar as we know, the majority of both ships SURVIVED that catastrophic event!!! How the (expletives deleted) tough and resilient must that armour be? Compared to that, 15 times shaped Crystal Alyssium may be as resistant as matches in the corona of a star are to heat! Dana is not even close to being able to replicate that capability, especially without a Soul Forge. Given this, I still don't see why anyone thinks that John is going to be fighting Larn'kelnar in a ship to ship battle aboard the Invictus. If Larn'kelnar had at *any* time wanted to rid himself of John, he could have done so as easily as blinking. Instead, he has gone to some trouble to ensure that John survives. Folks, I just don't see Larn'kelnar being John's enemy, on the face of things, given what he has demonstrably been able to do. Larn'kelnar has also demonstrated that he knows where John is at almost all times, so it's not like he can't find him and kill him at any time he wishes. The one thing that he hasn't been able to determine is why John is doing what he's doing, although he's starting to get an inkling. The real question is not how will John 'match the power of the BSP'... or as we now know him, Larn'kelnar. The real question is simply what is Larn'kelnar doing, why, and how does it relate to John? Everything else is meaningless as I see it, because John is not going to 'match' Larn'kelnar's powers and resources within any short period of time, meaning years. At some point, John's got to start asking these questions himself. He doesn't know that he's being watched, but he certainly knows about Mael'nerak's fight with Ranagon, and the power of the secondary weapons aboard the Progenitors' vessels, and that they are secondary weapons, and the destruction that Mael'nerak caused, and the fact that the Legacy survived it largely intact. John or Calara should also certainly know that the notion of coincidence is faulty, and that they've had enough encounters where they've seen the Progenitor's ship to understand that he's seen them as well and could have easily destroyed them. So, the questions then become, why hasn't he? Why doesn't he? What's going on? If John isn't asking these questions, Calara and/or Rachel and/or Alyssa should be. Edraele, Irilith and Tashana should be, too. There are too many smart, perceptive and untrusting personalities involved for this not to be the case. They might not know the answers any more than we do, but they too should be asking the questions.

In terms of pushing the Kirrix back into their own space... I haven't seen any evidence that the Kirrix retreat, so it's not a matter of pushing them back, but exterminating them within the confines of the space within which you wish to remove them, and eliminating enough of them outside of that area so that they don't re-infest the area that you're trying to protect. Having protected boundaries seems to the only deterrent that has worked, so far, with the Kirrix. Or am I missing something?

Next step is the Kirrix for John and the Invictus. 'tomorrow' he will meet with the terran fleet and during that time the final refit of the invictus tachyon lances will be completed. What do you think the order of battle will be in terms of command and communication structure - both in the air and on the ground. What do you think the strategy let alone the tactics will be for reclaiming the worlds, deinfesting and pushing Kirrix back into their own space? These will obviously influence the deployment of the avaioable resources

he he JFL. I think you are right, at some stage Lynette and Jehanna will use their gifts but whether it is Mace or not we will just have to wait and see. To keep the story relatively clean I suspect Mace and his sister will learn the truth about their dad and somehow healing will begin.

Another observation: Adm (RET) Bucky's son is going to be granted berevement leave and he is going to get some of the Admirals who ran away from Alyssa and John and go to Fleet Admiral D and try to kill her. But the shield generators and Gatling Laser power level pistols she and Jahenna are sporting are going to give them a rather rude surprise. I am thinking the insurgents will commandeer the Defensive Gatling Laser emplacements in the entrances to the officers' quarters and our two secret lionesses will just walk through and melt them off their mounts while everyone else just gapes in wonder. John is going to be....what is the word? PISSED!

Love it JFL and I'm sure this will invite alot of comment until we sort of agree on the ideal strike force for comparison in later chapters. What role for the Valkyrie? I imagine it would get beneath hard shields and wreck havoc although I think you are suggesting tachyon lances would be enough to rip shields so the valkyrie is only needed as part of ground operations. Where does the quantum flux cannon fit into the armament for the invictus?

Ok...here is where I think the tech goes. They figure out the soul forge location only to realize it uses up thrall lives. Dana gets innovative with it and they create white ships in the Cruiser class with other advancements and combinations from Dana on the Progen and other race's techs which may include dark energy weaponry (similar to matter/antimatter but at the energy phase not the matter phase). Said weapons not only can dematerialize matter but also energy shields and energy beams. It does this through the application of repulsive gravity that just causes the atomic and sub-atomic structures to be repelled in their smallest possible states...dispursing matter and energy into non-coherent forms...like the phasers did on Star Trek. The new Cruiser class gunships (16) are more resilient than Progen flagships, more maneuverable than the Raptor, and serve as picket vessels for the Invictus with minimalist Maliri crews of 1 pilot, 2 gunners, one Captain...but have three complete crews that take shifts with the off duty shifts housed on the Invictus. All the gunship crews are prescient and are tied into a psychic battle subplane and the gunners never miss. And, equip every advanced Miliri fighter with quad, gimbal mounted Tachyon Lances, Progen power cores/regulators/hard shields/zero point regulators and hive mind capability. They should fly in a 7 member flock in an Octohedron formation with a centralized fighter (below) with the center ship moving the whole flock and providing the firing solutions/commands and shielding the group. When its shields are weakened it trades places with one of the other 7 fighters who then takes up those responsibilities. That gives the squadron a minimum of 16 tachyon lances to focus on a target or 28 total with near unlimited survivability. The Ashanath pour psychic energy into the Soul Forge to make them by hooking in through Alyssa's subplane. Nearly the entire population working in concert with psychic enhancers....producing ship parts and skeletons for their and the Maliri's new fleets. Fill the cargo bay with the new Maliri Fighter Squadrons and one third of the off duty Maliri cross train on them so they can be used in a larger firefight.

Hehe I like it, it's taking a page out of Jean Johnson's "Theirs Not To Reason Why". Another thing to do is lay down fire on an approaching fleet while they are still traveling at FTL, of course this assumes that a ship is not "out of phase" so to speak while at FTL.

in re-reading I found a little hint we all missed about Aylssa's surprise at the end , when Alyssa asked Edraele for some advice on if John would like her surprise , she answered "I'm all ears" , dang that Tefler is a sneaky dude .

I'm still waiting for Calara to use the Singularity Drivers to shell an unsuspecting hostile fleet from beyond sensor range, like the next star system over. The Singularity Drivers fire solid chunks of metal at FTL speeds, and with Calara's abilities, she can predict where a hostile fleet will be at a certain time, and since the laws of physics dictate that an object will continue to move until acted on by another force, she should be able to aim the Singularity Drivers in such a way that the shells will reach the target point at the same time as the unsuspecting fleet does. With the enemy fleet caught completely off guard and shields down, Calara should be able to score dozens of hits with a rapid fire volley from the Singularity Drivers before the target ships can react.

With regards to the third item, the Singularity Drivers are already FTL weapons, launching a solid chunk of metal at FTL speeds. So really, I don't imagine anything will change tactically, aside from being able to kill enemy ships faster with the new Tachyon Lances. For the fourth item, it might be possible that Vulkat missile tech is somehow able to bypass hardened shields that normal missiles can't, but it could also be that the Vulkat were simply able to overwhelm the Thrall shield tech with massed missile volleys, knocking the shields out before scoring hits against the hull.

Well, I am curious about a few things. First: the slow transformation of the Bots into entities with personality. Second: the transmutation of Faye to a real girl. Third: the new Tachyon weapons, if truly tachyon, cannot travel less that the speed of light...so you have ftl weapons....how does that change tactics? Fourth: The Vulkat image shows scores of mini Torpedo hits on a thrall vessel...which has a solid state shield. Does this mean the Vulkat mini missiles can penetrate a solid state shield???

Actually Cignal...that is correct. The two hours was with the current number of bots. Which Faye is doubling. So the time would be an hour with the new bots.

Also I don't know if Admiral Kesters first name is Andrew or not but on page 57, it states “Andrew Kester sends his regards,” Eleanor said, with a smile. Just checking.

Tefler on page 4, Faye says it will take her boys 126 minutes to swap out the Tachyon Lances out, Faye piped up. “Assuming you make the weapon mounts on the Tachyon Lances compatible with our existing turrets, it’ll take my boys 126 minutes to swap them all out." then in the next paragraph, John states it will only take an hour. "“So we’ll only need an hour for the refit,” John said". One or the other should change as 126 minutes is over two hours.
